Kyoto's hidden gem, Hanase, is located deep in the mountains, surrounded by the beautiful natural scenery of Kitayama cedar trees. The road leading to Hanase is narrow, with tight curves and several mountain passes to cross before reaching this secluded area. Despite being home to only about 100 residents, Hanase is still considered part of Kyoto city. Operating the Hanase Highland Inn is Keiko, originally from Osaka, and Simon, from Scotland. They previously ran a restaurant in Australia's Blue Mountains but decided to return to Japan due to family caregiving responsibilities. Surprisingly, Hanase was not a place with any personal connection to Keiko, as they simply stumbled upon it online and purchased the 130-year-old traditional Japanese house, which they spent two years renovating into a guesthouse. The guesthouse accommodates one group per day, offering a spacious layout with a Japanese-style room upstairs and a living room downstairs. Despite the rural setting, the house is equipped with amenities like wood stoves and kerosene heaters to keep guests warm in the chilly mountain environment. The outdoor bathhouse features a large ceramic bathtub and showers, providing a relaxing bathing experience. Keiko and Simon share their home with their family, including Boss, a 9-year-old Shiba Inu, and Gacchan, a 3-year-old domestic duck. Boss, with his dignified presence, initially barks at visitors but quickly warms up to them. Gacchan, on the other hand, is a charming duck with a taste for brown rice and cherry tomatoes. Gacchan's love for tomatoes is evident in the tomato plants sprouting in the garden where he leaves his droppings. Simon, with his background in high-end hotel restaurants, prepares simple yet exquisite meals at the Hanase Highland Inn. Guests are treated to a delicious hot pumpkin soup with a crispy cheese pie followed by salmon meuniere, showcasing Simon's culinary expertise. Despite the chilly autumn night, the warm soup and hearty meal leave guests feeling cozy and satisfied.
