I forgot to take a photo, as usual. I always buy onigiri on the last day of my Kyoto trip. I love onigiri. I got the brown rice with salmon and cheese with bonito flakes. They are big, soft, salty, and perfect for snacking. There used to be a compact bento with two onigiri and side dishes, but I think it's gone now. They still package it nicely, so I enjoyed it at home.

Today I was working in Shijo again, and I had lunch at Ichiryu Manbai. I felt like the portion was a bit small, but then I saw an onigiri shop right in front of me! It's called Manpuku Onigiri Kizuto Shijo Teramachi store, pronounced as "Beitsu." They specialize in takeout onigiri. There were so many types of onigiri to choose from, but the top two rankings caught my eye - salmon and tempura. I decided to go with the tempura onigiri for 190 yen. It was a bit small, but when I opened it and took a bite, the sauce had soaked in perfectly, making it incredibly delicious. The shrimp tempura had the tail cut off, making it easy to eat. It truly lived up to its ranking as the second best! With the ramen from Ichiryu Manbai and the onigiri from Beitsu, my hunger was satisfied. Next time, I'll have to try the number one ranked onigiri! I walked behind Takashimaya on Shijo Street and found a rice ball shop just before Sendo. I peeked inside and saw that even though the rice balls were big, they were quite cheap. I bought a "bakudan" rice ball for 210 yen (including tax) which had salmon, plum, and seaweed fillings. I imagined that each ingredient would be in a different part of the rice ball, so you could enjoy a different flavor with each bite. However, all the fillings were mixed together in the center, creating a rather violent rice ball experience (laughs).

Manpuku Onigiri "Kometo" located next to Fujii Daimaru. I wasn't really interested in onigiri in Kyoto, but a friend bought me onigiri from this shop when I was taking the Shinkansen, and that's how I found out about this place. They also sell various side dishes like sausages and fried chicken. But of course, they specialize in onigiri. I recommend the onigiri made with brown rice. On this day, I bought the brown rice grilled salmon onigiri. The brown rice is chewy and fluffy, almost falling apart, and it's delicious. Depending on the day, there are special deals on onigiri, and there are also seasonal limited editions. It's a popular shop for children to the elderly. Very satisfied.

I had always been curious about it as I passed by, and finally had the chance to purchase it. It was in the evening, so the side dishes were on sale, but this time I only bought the Cheese Okaka for 145 yen. There are many onigiri around 150 yen, so considering that the price is not much different from a convenience store, there is a slight sense of getting a deal. When I opened it, I was surprised to find that it was larger than the usual size. It was horizontally long? This added to the sense of getting a good deal. The taste was delicious, but I felt that there was not much cheese flavor. There were about 5 small pieces of processed cheese. If the onigiri had been hot, the cheese would have melted and tasted even better. Thank you for the meal.

I visited this shop while in Kyoto. I wanted to try the brown rice onigiri, which I heard was big. The location is easy to find, along Teramachi Street. I had no trouble finding it. On a weekend just before lunchtime, there were indeed large onigiri lined up. I bought the salt brown rice onigiri and the salmon brown rice onigiri. The salt brown rice onigiri could use a bit more salt, I thought. The brown rice didn't have much of a chewy texture. The salmon brown rice onigiri had small pieces of salmon inside! I was expecting flaked salmon, so the fresh cut pieces were a nice surprise. But the fillings were still small. Lots of rice though! Despite my slightly negative comments, it was not bad at all! It was delicious, big, reasonably priced, and just like others have said, it's definitely better than convenience store onigiri! I prefer it over department store onigiri too. I have a favorite brown rice onigiri shop in Tokyo, and compared to that, the onigiri here lacked the chewy texture, but if you're buying onigiri in Kyoto, I recommend this place! They have a variety of options, so you won't get bored. The staff were extremely nice! Efficient, with a great smile and excellent customer service! The staff definitely deserve a "5" rating!

When you walk down Teramachi Street, you'll come across an electronics district, which used to be Kyoto's Akihabara in the past. Just like Akihabara, the stores here now focus more on selling computer parts and games rather than home appliances. One place that always catches my eye is this rice ball shop called "Maito". I often pass by it on my way to Kishisushi, and although I don't usually buy rice balls unless I have a specific destination in mind, I sometimes stop by for a late-night snack or a treat. They usually have rice balls with generous fillings like fried chicken, but on this day, I was intrigued by the takoyaki rice ball. I bought one and tried it at home. It tasted just like takoyaki and rice combined. In Kansai region, it's common to have takoyaki or okonomiyaki for dinner with rice, so the taste was quite as expected. Rolling the rice ball in seaweed added a nice touch. For those of you who might be surprised by the idea of having carbohydrates as a side dish with rice, it's time to wake up from the misconception that carbohydrates cannot be a side dish.

When walking through Teramachi Street, I always passed by but finally managed to buy some this time after work. It was already past 6 pm so most of the items were sold out, but I decided to try what was left. I got the clam rice ball (155 yen) and the "Aijou Musubi" (185 yen, which is like a parent and child rice bowl). When I got home and tried them, I was surprised by how big they were! The rice balls were packed full and even one was quite filling. I ate two and felt satisfied. The rice didn't seem to have much saltiness, probably to complement the fillings. They were delicious! The staff was friendly and I even got a point card. I would like to try more rice balls from here rather than buying from the convenience store. Thank you for the meal!

I had curry and stopped by Sentauro Main Store where I found rice ball flags. I bought one for myself for dinner, including clam (155 yen) and grilled salmon (165 yen) rice balls, and one for my wife, including bonito flakes (125 yen) and seasoned seaweed (115 yen) rice balls. I also got a wiener (135 yen) on the side! Rice balls are so nice to eat, they make me feel like a child again. My favorite is the clam rice ball, I always make sure to buy it when I go there. I had two this time and they really filled me up!

On June 22, 2014 at 5:12 PM, I ordered a 160m onigiri from "Kome Miyako" in Kawaramachi. I got the edamame onigiri for 165 yen. This shop on Teramachi Street is affordable with a wide variety of options for side dishes like tamagoyaki, yakisoba, and miso soup. This time, I bought the seasonal edamame onigiri which had edamame and green peas with a slightly strong salt flavor. It was much more delicious than onigiri bought from convenience stores or department stores. This shop is a great place to stop by when you're feeling a bit peckish. Rating: 3.4

"Edamame" An onigiri that allows you to fully enjoy the texture of edamame. The saltiness is just right, and the rice is delicious. Plus, it has a satisfying volume. It was a very satisfying onigiri.
"Grilled salmon" A classic choice. The amount of salmon is normal, but considering the amount of rice, it might be a bit on the smaller side. A Japanese onigiri that goes well with miso soup. It's calming...(=▽=) Two onigiri for 310 yen. Each onigiri is quite large, and the price is reasonable. The rice grains are distinct and delicious without any strange flavors. It was a good decision to stop by. Thank you for the meal♪

This onigiri shop that my family frequently visits is really great. Each onigiri is big and handmade, with a variety of unique options. Once you try them, you won't want to go back to convenience store onigiri. The lineup starts at around ¥130 and they are very satisfying. This time, I bought the seasonal mushroom onigiri, tuna mayo, and plum. The mushroom onigiri was a bit lacking in flavor... too light! The tuna mayo had too little filling! Huh...? I always used to be satisfied no matter which one I ate.

Visited on December 16, 2011. They offer various homemade onigiri for around 100 yen each, and you can even have them heated up for you to enjoy them fresh and warm. The staff is very friendly. Located on Teramachi Street in Kyoto. Perfect for a light snack, breakfast, or late-night meal. Tried the new Shio-Dare Buta Cabbage onigiri and it was delicious. I'm hooked. Also tried the Konbu and Hotate onigiri, which was also tasty. Truly a great place with homemade, affordable, and delicious options. Highly recommended.

As a tourist, I purchased Onigiri from the Kitashirakawa main store after arriving on a night bus and instantly fell in love with it. I have been using it effectively as part of my accommodation's breakfast. The price is the same as at convenience stores, but the size is almost double at 150g! The value for money is definitely different. This time, I chose the Sea Chicken Mayo and Bonito flavors. The size and shape are symbolic, and the rice is delicious. That's what I liked about it. I prefer the slightly firm texture, it feels substantial. Honestly, it often comes out cold, so even when heated at the accommodation, it doesn't fall apart much. The Sea Chicken also feels like it's hand-mixed, quite different from factory-made ones. They are not stingy with the amount of filling. The Bonito flavor adds a nice touch with its subtle taste, not too salty. I found out they also collaborated with the famous hotel 9 Hours, so I learned about it. Since the store is small, using 9 Hours as a reference is a good idea. I recommend tourists to enjoy Onigiri while visiting the shrine grounds!

While walking down the street, I happened to come across a rice ball shop. They offer a variety of rice balls ranging from the standard ones like bonito flakes and pickled plum to unique options like mushroom rice, grilled chicken, clam rice, miso cutlet, and cheese bonito. I discovered the "Kyushu Trio Bakudan" (¥240), which is a rice ball filled with grilled chicken, fukuya mentaiko, and spicy pickled greens. It was packed with ingredients and the pickled greens were sautéed in oil, which was a nice touch. The balance of spiciness from the mentaiko and pickled greens was just right, creating a pleasant kick. It was quite filling despite its compact appearance. However, I wish they had made it a bit softer by adding more air. Perhaps they packed it tightly to prevent it from falling apart due to the generous fillings.

I have used this place for lunch several times. They sell in a very small space (I think it used to be a hanko shop). There is a convenience store across the street, and many shops like electronics stores around, so during lunchtime, office ladies and salarymen come one after another to buy. This time, I had three onigiri: bonito flakes, plum, and salmon. It was quite filling and even when cold, it was quite delicious, but something was different. When I had it before, the rice had a bit more stickiness and a bit more saltiness. It somehow felt too light and unsatisfying. It might be because of my condition...

I found this place on Tabelog and as a fan of onigiri, I couldn't resist checking it out! The shop itself is really small but they have a wide variety of onigiri filling up the showcase. What really caught my eye was the "Fukuya's mentaiko" onigiri. My father is from Fukuoka so when it comes to mentaiko, Fukuya is my favorite. I bought it without hesitation and took it home. It had a generous amount of filling and the onigiri itself was quite filling. Considering the price, I think it's quite affordable. They also had a variety of side dishes for the onigiri. After buying onigiri here, I might consider going a bit further to enjoy it around the Kamogawa area. I envy those who work around here! ☆ヾ(≧▽≦)o

It's a small shop that could be called a food stall, but it's easy to stop by and they offer over 10 different types of onigiri! Each one is handmade and filling, I can be satisfied with 3 for lunch. My boyfriend said he overate with 4 (lol). The rice has a sweet taste and it's affordable, so I often go there when I'm feeling a bit hungry. The image shows the karashi mayo onigiri, which is my top recommendation!
