Shitsuya is a takeout-only shop located underground at Keihan Sanjo Station. It's a small store with many female customers, so shopping there requires a bit of consideration. This time, I tried the nostalgic New Bird, a soft roll with sausage inside that is fried. It doesn't have a strong flavor, just a simple taste. I often buy it as frequently as their famous Carne.

In September 2023, before heading back to Osaka from Sanjo Station in Kyoto, I stopped by "Shizuya" outside the ticket gates to buy some bread for the next morning. I got the following items:
- Cuscute (mini) for 250 yen: A hard French bread that goes well with boneless ham and processed cheese.
- Domestic Spicy Cod Roe France for 210 yen: A special spicy cod roe sauce spread on soft French bread, making it even more delicious and easy to eat.
- New Bird for 240 yen: A local bread from Kyoto. A whole Wiener sausage wrapped in curry-flavored dough, coated in breadcrumbs and fried until crispy.
I think my favorite was the Cuscute. I had never heard of New Bird before, but it seems to be a traditional bread from Kyoto. Thank you for the meal!

I got off the train and found Shitsuya when I came up to the ground. I didn't know there was a Shitsuya here. There are Shitsuya stores here and there. It's a small store that would fill up with just two or three people, and it's takeout only. Besides the classic carne, they had a new product for June, the "Baguette Sandwich Shrimp Cutlet Lemon (tax included 420 yen)." I love shrimp, so I immediately got that. As the name suggests, it's a sandwich with shrimp cutlet, lemon sauce (mayonnaise with a lemon flavor?), and lettuce. It's fried food, but it's refreshing, which might be nice during the humid and hot season.

I had work at Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto, and after that, I had another job at night. I needed something to eat in between, so I went to Shizuya at Keihan Sanjo Station. In my mind, Shizuya equals "karune," so I had the Pepper Karune. It was delicious! I'm not an expert on bread, but the texture, the hint of onion and ham, and maybe mayonnaise or butter - it was all perfectly delicious! As expected, it was just the right size for a little snack. It was delicious as always. On January 29, 2023, during my winter food journey in Kyoto, I visited "Niku Ryori Kanae," "Canele," "Kato Jun Tsukemono-ten," and "Honke Tsukemochiya Naomasa," before returning to Osaka via Sanjo Station. Before boarding the 3:30 pm departure of the Keihan Limited Express Premium Car, I stopped by "Shizuya Keihan Sanjo Store" to grab some morning bread supplies. I purchased the following items: Kyoto Karune for 230 yen, Danish Carne for 250 yen, New Bird for 230 yen, and Snow Bread sliced bread for 260 yen. The popular "Karune" from the established bakery "Shizuya," founded in 1948, is a German-style French bread with a fluffy texture, topped with thinly sliced ham, sliced onions, and a smooth margarine for a simple yet popular flavor. The "Karune" has been featured on various TV shows and magazines, and recently gained popularity again after being praised by Takuya Kimura on Instagram. The "Danish Canele" featured a crispy Danish bread texture, while the "New Bird" was a curry-flavored wiener donut coated in breadcrumbs and fried. I used the "Snow Bread" to make sandwiches like "Spam and Egg Sandwich" and "Bacon and Cheese Honey Hot Sandwich," which turned out beautifully using a new high-quality sandwich maker. Enjoyed the meal!

In Kyoto travel specials and programs, celebrities introduce familiar bakeries to Kyoto residents. These bakeries offer traditional Japanese-style bread, including anpan which is perfect for souvenirs. One popular item is the taiko anpan, shaped like a drum and filled with sweet red bean paste.

▼Location▼
Located on the B1F floor inside the Kyoto Shijo Station (outside the ticket gates).
▼About the Shop▼
Shizuya - A chain bakery shop representing Kyoto, founded in 1948. The name "Shizuya" comes from the founder's wife, Shizuko. It is a beloved spot for bread enthusiasts in Kyoto. The Kyoto Shizuya store at the Keihan Kusaba Station is a branch located on the 1st floor of the station building.
▼Menu▼
They offer a variety of items including the famous Carne, side dish bread, and sweet bread.
▼Food Ordered▼
▽Danish Carne 250 yen▽
A Carne made with Danish pastry, with ham and onions sandwiched between margarine-spread Danish pastry. The combination of ham, onions, and margarine on the Danish pastry creates a simple yet delicious taste.
▽Cream-filled Bun 210 yen▽
A cream-filled bun with a creamy custard filling inside a perfectly baked, slightly fluffy pastry. The custard is rich and creamy, with a slightly strong sweetness that is quite enjoyable.
▼Impressions▼
A well-loved bakery chain in Kyoto, founded in 1948, with over 20 stores in Kyoto city. Known for their popular Carne, this bakery chain is a favorite among Kyoto residents. The Kyoto Shijo store is a small branch located right outside the ticket gates of the Sanjo Station. I visit Kyoto a few times a year and always make sure to stop by Shizuya. This time, I tried the Danish Carne and Cream-filled Bun, both of which were delicious. The Danish Carne had a great Danish pastry taste, and I would love to try more of their bread in the future.

I visited Kyoto for the first time in two years and stopped by a famous bakery called Shitsuya before heading back to Osaka on the Keihan train. I bought the following bread for tomorrow's breakfast:
- Shitsuya Beef Curry Bun
- Kyoto Karune
- Creamy Cream Bun
The creamy cream bun had a surprisingly generous amount of cream inside for its small size. The mild and rich custard cream was best enjoyed with the soft bread. The Shitsuya Beef Curry Bun had a flavorful curry sauce with a spicy kick and rich beef flavor. The Kyoto Karune was a French bread sandwich with onion slices and ham, simple yet highlighting the deliciousness of the ingredients. The breads were all satisfying and delicious, with cute packaging. Thank you for the meal!

Last time, I went to a bakery located about a 4-minute walk from Sanjo Station, which is part of the same chain, but this time I went to a bakery inside the station. I purchased a sandwich with various fillings this time. The bread part was firm and a bit dry, so I honestly thought it was just okay, but the fillings were not bad. There was a unique taste of margarine spread on the bread, and I could taste it a little while eating. It was a bit disappointing that the bread part was dry despite the good fillings. It was better than the one I had before, so I slightly raised my rating. I thought I would like to try other sandwiches as well.

This is a store located inside Keihan Sanjo Station. There are two entrances, but you enter from the front, grab a tray, pick up some bread, pay at the register in the back, and leave from the side of the register. The store is small, so you have to be a little careful while shopping (laughs). In these times, all the products on the shelves are individually wrapped, which is nice. And now, bags that used to cost extra are given for free, which is also nice. - French croissant 190 yen - Salt bread @160 x 2 320 yen - Kyoto Karne 230 yen Total 740 yen This time, I bought only my favorite items at the store. The French croissant with a buttery aroma, the salty bread with a garlic and onion flavor, and the simple Kyoto Karne with ham and cheese. Highly recommended. Enjoy your meal!

Kyoto Drum Red Bean Bun ~Black Bean Paste~ 280 yen
A cylindrical red bean bun with a diameter of about 70mm and a thickness of 30mm. The thin bread dough on the outside seems to exist only to wrap the red bean paste. Inside, there is a smooth red bean paste with large black beans. When you take a bite, you reach the red bean paste in an instant, but the bread and butter also make their presence known. The sweetness of the azuki beans, black beans, and butter collaborate in your mouth.

If you go to Kyoto, make sure to stop by a "Shitsuya" somewhere. This time, I got it at the Keihan Sanjo store because I got off at Sanjo Station, it's convenient being inside the station. I usually go for "Kyokarune," but this time I tried the Pepper Karune (240 yen). It still has the deliciousness of Kyokarune, but the spicy black pepper mayonnaise gives it an extra kick. It brings out the deliciousness of the boneless ham and onion slices even more. It feels like a "slightly adult Karune," and from now on, this will also be one of my favorites.

The size and price were just right. The meat was thick and the taste was quite good. There are no benches outside the ticket gates at Sanjo Keihan Station, and there are no seats on the subway either. I ended up at Kikuzaka Station, but there were no benches at all, which made me cry. That's Kyoto for you.

In the store located inside Keihan Sanjo Station, right in front of the ticket gate, I couldn't help but stop by (laughs). The variety was a bit disappointing, perhaps because it was starting to get dark, but there were plenty of the famous carnes. I bought 2 New Birds for 230 yen each and 3 Kyoto Carnes for 210 yen each, totaling 1090 yen. The Kyoto Carne is a popular simple bread with ham, onions, and margarine on French bread. It's really delicious when slightly warmed up, with the aroma of margarine. The New Bird is a local bread with curry flavor in yellow dough with sausages inside. This one is also quite simple! I'd like to compare New Birds from different shops. Thank you for the meal!

This is Kyoto. In Kyoto, there is a shop located inside the Keihan Sanjo Station, outside the ticket gate. I passed by the shop before boarding the Keihan train and bought various items for tomorrow's breakfast. I couldn't resist getting the Carne, Sakura red bean paste bun, Ogura red bean paste bun, Epi bread, and croquette bun. The prices seemed a bit high considering the atmosphere of the shop. However, they were all delicious, although slightly overpriced. The Carne was tastier when lightly toasted, and the Ogura bun was also better when slightly toasted. The flavors were comforting and just as expected. I personally prefer a harder texture for the Epi bread, but I think this softer version would be more appealing to most people. Despite my complaints, if I see Shizuya again, I will most likely buy something to take home.

Store located inside the Keihan Sanjo Station. Perfect for a quick snack before catching the train. The small shop allows for a quick and easy shopping experience.
- Crispy Cheese: 260 yen
- Kyoto Karne (2 pieces): 420 yen
Total: 680 yen
The Kyoto Karne is a simple and delicious combination of soft croissant with ham, cheese, and mayonnaise. It's recommended to lightly warm it in a toaster. The Crispy Cheese, purchased for the first time, is filled with multiple diced cheeses and has a flavorful and crispy crust. Heating it up also enhances the taste. It's hard to resist buying something from this convenient location. Bon appétit!

I made sure to get the classic carne asada while also grabbing a limited-time strawberry sandwich to go. Ate it on the train and it was delicious! Both the strawberries and cream were tasty, but the bread was especially delicious! It had a Danish-like texture with a hint of orange, making it a highly recommended strawberry sandwich!

The store is quite small inside the Sanjo Station on the Keihan Electric Railway. There are two entrances/exits, one for entering and the other for exiting, although there are no specific signs. It's a quick stop before catching the train. During a recent visit, I found that my points card had expired. I mentioned this to the staff, and they kindly informed me that the points on the card never expire. I ordered two salt breads for 150 yen each, a croquette for 200 yen, a Kyoto curry for 210 yen, and a custard pudding for 220 yen, totaling 930 yen. My favorite is the salt bread, which has a nice buttery taste and just the right amount of salt. The Kyoto curry is simple yet delicious, so I always get it. I like to try different things, but these two items are always the best in my opinion. Thank you for the meal!

Today, I had work in Kyoto from the morning. I bought breakfast at "Shizuya Keihan Sanjo Store" located just outside the ticket gate of Keihan Sanjo Station. I decided to eat on the bench downstairs. The fluffy omelette sandwich costs 560 yen (tax included). It's quite heavy. The thick omelette with sliced cucumber is simple but delicious! I wonder how many eggs are in it. For women, two slices might be filling... I ate four slices and I was quite full! Thank you for the meal!

A bakery located just outside the ticket gate of Keihan Sanjo Station, with multiple stores in Kyoto. I bought a curry bread with a striking bag. The bread is slightly chewy, but the spicy curry inside is delicious and soaked into the bread. It's very tasty. The fact that they provide free bags at the register is convenient. The location is also good, so I'm likely to come back.
