Enjoyable food tasting at Nishiki Market. Discovered a tempura (Satsuma-age) shop and found something intriguing called "Yurine Yuba Maki Tempura". It looked so delicious with a combination of yuba and lily root. It's ranked 3rd in popularity. I had to buy it. Bought two pieces to take home. It cost 350 yen per piece, a bit pricey but worth it. One piece I ate as is, and the other I dipped in soy sauce and had it with rice. It was delicious. The lily root flavor wasn't very strong, but the yuba was fantastic. The tempura was well-seasoned with a hint of sweetness, making it perfect with soy sauce. Even though I'm on a diet, I couldn't resist eating it with rice. Next time, I'll aim to get it freshly fried.

On September 30, 2019, I enjoyed a leisurely cup of tea at the Kagi-san tea room in Ichibadou Tea Shop, then headed south along Teramachi Street to pay my respects at Nobunaga's grave at Honno-ji Temple before arriving at Nishiki Market. Despite hearing about the crowds of foreigners at Nishiki Market, it wasn't too overwhelming on a weekday around 4 pm. While my classmate shopped for souvenirs next door at Kyo-Nishiki Hokusai Graphic, I tried the Lily Root and Yuba Roll Tempura for 320 yen in a quiet spot. The freshly fried Lily Root and Yuba Roll Tempura was hot and delicious, and I enjoyed the contrasting textures of the yuba and lily root. It's one of my favorite dishes. Thank you for the meal. Whenever I visit Kyoto, this is a dish I must have.

I went to Marujou Kamaboko in Nishiki Market. It is a well-known fish cake shop located past Yanaginobaba Street. I thought it would be listed in guidebooks, but surprisingly it wasn't in the book I had. I had been sampling sake before coming to this shop, so the timing was perfect! However, there was a crowd, so I couldn't calmly look at the products (laughs). The most popular items are the "Potato Butter Tempura" followed by the "Onion Bacon Tempura", both priced at 320 yen. The fish cakes for sale seem to be mostly handmade. I also noticed they were selling fried foods as well. I tried the Onion Bacon Tempura. The texture of the ingredients was nice, and the surimi part was chewy, giving it a satisfying bite. I really liked the taste. With the hot pot season approaching, I can imagine adding these items to a big pot of oden... just the thought of it sounds delicious...

A shop where you can try a variety of fish cake skewers. The staff are very friendly and likeable ❤️ I bought a fish cake with yakisoba inside, which I had never seen before. The taste is delicious, but I couldn't really taste the yakisoba. Overall, I think it's a great shop! Thank you for the meal ☀️

I found this place while looking for some evening snacks to enjoy at the hotel during my photo trip in Kyoto. Maruto Kamaboko, which has expanded into Kansai department stores, offers a variety of kamaboko. I chose the Jagabata Ten, Bai Lili Root Ten, and Yuba Maki Ten. I'm not a fan of butter itself, so I went with the Bai Lili Root Ten. It was delicious! The texture of the dough was chewy, and the bai lili root was not too big but had a nice softness to it. This kamaboko had a hint of sweetness and was a perfect accompaniment to drinks. Thank you for the meal!

I tried the most popular Jagabata Tempura that everyone was lining up for. As a big fan of Jagabata, I took a bite and thought, "Huh?" I couldn't really taste the Jagabata flavor. However, as a processed food, it was delicious. Maybe if I had something with more texture, I would have appreciated the taste more. I want to try a different flavor next time.

Yurine (lily bulb) wrapped in tofu skin for 290 yen! I'm not sure which part is the yurine, but it was delicious (lol).

Whenever I go to Nishiki Market, I always buy something fried because it's delicious. It's great that you can buy and eat there. Surprisingly, the tempura and tomato dishes are also delicious. I will definitely stop by again when I come back.

It's been a while since I visited Nishiki Market. Lately, there has been a noticeable increase in tourists, turning it into a street for food sampling. We were tempted to join in as well. The popular kamaboko ranking seemed to be influenced by tourists, not Japanese people. We tried a kamaboko that was not ranked, and it seems that foreigners have sensitive tongues and might sue if they get burned. As a result, they served it lukewarm. Perhaps Japan is slowly losing its traditional charm.

Second time visiting Nishiki Market in my life... perfect for food tasting, right? This time, I had the best food tasting experience with my child, who has been living in Kyoto since April. We started our gourmet food tour at 13:20 by entering Nishiki Market. It was as crowded as ever. I love processed food, so I quickly found "Marutune Kamaboko". There are various items lined up. Oh, there are people who can't handle lining up like this... but I'm totally fine and enjoying it. The top 4 popular items are: 1. "Potato Butter Tempura" for 290 yen, 2. "Onion Bacon Tempura" for 290 yen, 3. "Tempura with unreadable name" for 290 yen, and "the one with burdock in it". Even my wife, who doesn't like onions, was impressed by the "Onion Bacon Tempura". Our first food stop was decent, a good start. No regrets, no leftovers. Eating happily and deliciously is all that matters. Thank you for the meal. 3.08 stars from 29 reviews.

[First visit on 17/09] I went to Marutane Kamaboko at Nishiki Market. They have a wide variety of options, it's hard to decide what to choose. The tempura is calling out to me, "Pick me, pick me!" After much deliberation, I decided to buy the Bacon and Onion Tempura for 290 yen, the Shinobi Tempura for 290 yen, and the Lily, Shrimp, and Mitsuba Tempura for 290 yen. I'll enjoy them with a beer at home. The tempura here is unique in that the oil used is very light, making it easy and enjoyable to eat. Thank you for the delicious meal!

After leaving Tsuruya Yoshinobu, I had originally planned to go to Mitsubachi, but after visiting a dessert shop one after another, I lost the motivation to continue hopping. So, I decided to visit Oga Hana earlier than planned. I took a city bus to Shijo Kawaramachi and headed to my destination, but since I was already there, I decided to go to Nishiki Market. The market was crowded with tourists, as if they had come to see people. As I wandered around, I happened to notice the existence of this shop. Kamaboko, huh. I was craving something salty, so I decided to try the Cheese Kamaboko (I forgot the name). They all looked delicious, but the Cheese Kamaboko caught my attention the most, so I bought it. It had a strong and flavorful kamaboko taste that paired well with the cheese. It was delicious. This made me crave for beer. So, I headed to my next destination.

Cheap Kyoto Tour (Part 1) (`_´)ゞ On a rare day off, I took my subordinates to enjoy Kyoto! We arrived at JR Kyoto Station a little after 10 in the morning. First, we visited the National Museum to see the Kaiboku Tomomatsu exhibition. Then, we strolled through the pottery shops on Gojozaka, with a beer in hand, heading north along the Kamogawa River from Kawaramachi to Nishiki Market. Unfortunately, the standing sushi and oyster bar we were aiming for were closed on Wednesdays! There were a lot of foreign tourists everywhere, forming lines. We decided to join in and first stopped at a shop grilling large shrimp, which was not listed on Tabelog, so I won't upload it. Next, we lined up at a shop selling processed fish products, which was this one. (`_´)ゞ I ordered the potato butter, which was handed out one by one to customers as they stood and ate. The taste was very delicious, with mashed fish wrapped around the potato butter. m(_ _)m

Key point of sightseeing in Kyoto, Nishiki Market, visited on the first and second day this time. Feeling a bit hungry, I bought Lily Root and Yuba Tempura for 290 yen. I thought I could leisurely choose as there were few tourists, but in no time the storefront was overflowing with people, showing its continued popularity. Since there was no place to eat on the go, I enjoyed it in front of a closed shop. It wasn't freshly fried, but the slightly warm Lily Root and Yuba Tempura combined the texture of Lily Root and the deliciousness of Yuba, making it tasty, but a bit expensive. Bon appétit, I tend to splurge a bit when traveling.

Strolling through Nishiki Market in early winter. Despite the relief from the crowded peak season of autumn leaves last month, the narrow alleyways are always bustling with tourists. I find myself unintentionally stopping in front of Marutsumo Kamaboko, where baskets lined with delicious processed products catch my eye. Perfect for oden ingredients, rice side dishes, and even as a snack with sake. They must be freshly fried at the shop, ensuring excellent freshness. Along the visible aisle closer to the walkway, slightly more expensive items are displayed, reflecting the slightly higher tourist prices. However, towards the back, there are relatively affordable daily use items, favored by regular customers. This seems to be the strategy adopted by many shops in Nishiki these days. With an increasing number of foreign visitors, including Chinese tourists, signs warning "Don't touch!" are now common at the storefronts. Later, I buy some "ika tempura" (160 yen) and "hira tempura" (130 yen) to enjoy at the ryokan. Interestingly, despite my attempts to engage in conversation, the shopkeeper remains unresponsive, only handing over the change. It dawns on me that dealing with a constant stream of tourists and the overwhelming crowds can be exhausting. The stress of managing hygiene with inbound tourists must also take its toll on the shop owners in Nishiki Market. Back at my regular inn in Osaka, I ask the landlady to lightly toast the chilled hira tempura and ika tempura in the refrigerator overnight. The sizzling golden color and aroma of freshly fried tempura return beautifully, served with freshly cooked rice and a splash of soy sauce. Although the taste is ordinary, the tempura goes well with rice for breakfast. I can't help but wonder if Kyoto's processed products have a texture similar to those in Kanto. I remember being told that Kyoto's processed products are made by grinding and mixing fresh ingredients with minimal additives before frying in fresh oil. Perhaps I should have spent a bit more on the 250-300 yen range products to truly experience the quality.

On October 29, 2016 (Saturday), my mother and I visited the Kamaboko Tempura store at Nishiki Market in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto. This shop is a famous tempura store with over 50 years of history. Recently, Nishiki Market has become a tourist spot, with customers mostly coming from overseas such as China, Vietnam, America, Europe, and Korea. Originally, the shop was frequented by locals from Kyoto for their daily side dishes. Kyoto locals used to go to the long-established shops in Nishiki Market to buy side dishes for their meals. It was a common practice for Kyoto locals to buy side dishes in the evening at Nishiki Market when they needed them. Nowadays, Nishiki Market is filled with many foreign visitors wandering around the narrow streets, taking photos of the old shops, shopping for cheap items, and enjoying street food. My mother and I have been purchasing red salmon and cod roe from Mokugen in Nishiki Market for a while now, paying 30,000 yen for 8 blocks of red salmon and 8 cod roe. Nishiki Market is known for its high prices and quality products. Going to Nishiki Market to shop for special occasions like New Year's and Obon and spending money on groceries was a special tradition for Kyoto locals. As a true Kyoto resident, I regularly buy vegetables, fish, and Kamaboko Tempura from Nishiki Market. I visit Nishiki Market about twice a month. My mother and I use the red salmon and cod roe from Mokugen as our daily side dishes. Mokugen in Nishiki Market provides a variety of ingredients focusing on dried seafood products. Once you try the red salmon and cod roe from Mokugen, you won't be able to enjoy the fish and dried seafood from other stores in Kyoto. Right across from Mokugen is Marujou Kamaboko Store, which I will introduce next. Marujou Kamaboko Store is a famous Kamaboko Tempura shop in Nishiki Market with a history of over 50 years. Due to the increasing number of foreign visitors wandering around Nishiki Market, Marujou Kamaboko Store offers a wide variety of Kamaboko Tempura for those who want to enjoy street food. Popular items like Cheese Kamaboko Tempura, Shiitake Mushroom Kamaboko Tempura, Lily Root Yuba Roll Kamaboko Tempura, Potato Bacon Kamaboko Tempura, and Onion Bacon Kamaboko Tempura are displayed for 290 yen each. Many foreign visitors ask in broken Japanese, "Which one is delicious?" and the staff recommend, "Potato Bacon Kamaboko Tempura, Lily Root Yuba Roll Kamaboko Tempura, and Onion Bacon Kamaboko Tempura are delicious. We recommend them." Each person usually buys Kamaboko Tempura for about 600 yen and walks around Nishiki Market while eating. Although Marujou Kamaboko Store offers a wide variety of Kamaboko Tempura, my mother and I decided to try the Shiitake Mushroom Kamaboko Tempura and Cheese Kamaboko Tempura first. They were incredibly delicious. After checking the reviews on Tabelog, I found out that Marujou Kamaboko Store has a great reputation. Since I visit Nishiki Market twice a month to buy red salmon and cod roe from Mokugen and have lunch at Ikemasa across from Mokugen, I have decided to also visit Marujou Kamaboko Store on my way back. When I called Marujou Kamaboko Store in advance, they said, "We will have Shiitake Mushroom Kamaboko Tempura, Potato Bacon Kamaboko Tempura, and Onion Bacon Kamaboko Tempura available around 11:30 in the morning." So, my mother and I bought two Shiitake Mushroom Kamaboko Tempura, two Onion Bacon Kamaboko Tempura, and two Potato Bacon Kamaboko Tempura. The total bill was 1740 yen. Based on the prices at this store, the average price ranges from 160 yen to 290 yen.

'I revisited after a long time in September 2016. I went to Nishiki Market and bought some Marutune fish paste products. They are really delicious here. No matter which one you eat, they are all delicious. I visited in January 2013. Today, I went to Marutune fish paste shop again. I was walking around Nishiki Market to get delicious ingredients as usual. This time, I bought some processed foods. The shop looked bright and inviting with a beckoning cat, so I stopped to take a look. On the left side of the store, there were various types of processed foods for sale. I decided to get the curry croquettes. On the right side, they were selling ground fish paste and fish cakes. I also got some from the left side. I bought three items this time. I wanted to buy more, but I had already bought many things from other shops, so I stopped at these. From left to right, I got the potato butter croquette for 250 yen, onion bacon croquette for 250 yen, and curry croquette for 150 yen. I cut them all in half at the same position. They were all delicious. The potato butter croquette had a strong potato butter flavor that hit my mouth instantly. It was really good. It would have been even better if I had eaten it hot right after it was made. Maybe I should eat them in front of the shop next time, like some people do. The onion bacon croquette is perfect with beer. I took one bite and immediately felt like having a beer. The onion and bacon added a nice touch to the flavor and made me want to eat more. I love curry, so I quickly decided to buy the curry croquette. It was a great choice. Just like curry bread, curry-flavored processed food is also delicious. I was hooked. I think I will buy it again next time. The small pieces of potato added a nice touch to the flavor. Marutune fish paste shop, wow, everything was delicious. I am very satisfied. Every time I go to Nishiki Market, I want to buy something from here. I am looking forward to what I will buy next time. I have found my favorite shop in Nishiki Market in Kyoto. I must go back again.'

When I visited Kyoto's Nishiki Market for work, I stopped by this shop. When it comes to kamaboko, tempura, and fried foods, places like Marugame are popular. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------The yuba tempura here has a softer texture compared to Marugame. At first, I couldn't quite tell it was yuba, but later I could sense the flavor of yuba. If you didn't know it was yuba, you probably wouldn't realize it. In terms of cost-performance, I thought it was a bit on the expensive side.

Eating and walking around Nishiki Market was really enjoyable, with a variety of sweet treats and savory dishes to try. I had a rule to not hold back and just buy whatever I wanted to eat, so I indulged in a luxurious food tour. As I walked from Kawaramachi towards the middle of Nishiki Market, I came across Marutomé Kamaboko. By this point, my stomach was starting to feel full, but I couldn't resist the urge to try something new! The shop had a wide selection of fried foods, perfect for food walking, making it difficult to choose just one. There were options like buttered potatoes, bacon and onion, some of which I had never seen before. Opting for something on the lighter side, I purchased bamboo shoot, onion, and ginger. The bamboo shoot was thinly sliced and mixed into the kamaboko before being fried. The firm texture of the bamboo shoot combined with the bouncy kamaboko made for a delightful snack. The onion kamaboko had a fluffy texture and a hint of onion aroma that whetted my appetite. It was just the right amount of greasy, and I devoured it in no time. The ginger had a pleasant aroma and despite being fried, it wasn't overpowering or heavy. It was incredibly delicious.
