Located near Nijo Station on the Keihan Main Line, this restaurant serves Thai and Laotian cuisine on the second floor of a building on the north side of Nijo Ohashi Bridge. My wife and I visited right after the opening at 5 p.m. during our stay in Kyoto. We had made a reservation in advance after finding this restaurant near our hotel. Upon entering the building, we could already smell the aroma of Southeast Asia. The name "Kinkao" means "eating rice" in Thai and Lao. The restaurant has 12 table seats and a raised area facing the Kamo River with a total of 30 seats. Thai music plays in the background, and Southeast Asian items are sold near the cashier. We were seated at a window-side raised area with a reservation tag. The view of the Kamo River and Higashiyama in the evening was truly Kyoto-like. Using a tablet, we ordered dishes such as "Som Tam Talay," "Hoi Tord," and "Tom Yum Kung (M)," along with Thai beer and a wine-based cocktail. The tablet made it easy to browse the menu and place orders. The dishes arrived promptly, including the seafood green papaya salad, Tom Yum Kung soup, and Thai-style oyster and bean sprout pancake. The flavors were excellent, and the view added to the overall dining experience. We wanted to try more dishes, but our stomachs were already full. This restaurant with great food and a wonderful view has become a must-visit spot for our next trip to Kyoto.

"Kinkao" in Kyoto. A Thai restaurant with a view of the Kamogawa River! Sometimes you just crave Thai food♩ Gapaow is a must♡ I always end up ordering Pad Thai, Khao Soi, and lots of carbs (*゚∀゚*). The portion size was just right and satisfying♩

I visited the restaurant on a Saturday before 1 pm. Most of the seats were taken, but I was seated at an available one. The ordering was done through a touch panel, with many lunch menu options priced around 1,000 yen. I ordered the Double Curry Set for 1,080 yen and added a fried egg for 50 yen. While waiting for the food, I enjoyed the view of the Kamo River towards Higashiyama. The meal was served in one plate, including salad, main dish, and dessert, which raised my expectations. The two curries were a vegetable-based vegan option and a green curry with chicken, both delicious. The other set included noodles and Gapao rice, offering a satisfying meal. Eating the fried egg together with it was very tasty. The noodles were lightly seasoned, but the chashu pork was flavorful, and adding some chili pepper from the table enhanced the taste. The taste and portion size were excellent for the price. While the dinner menu offers many single dishes for enjoyment, I would recommend the lunch menu for a more affordable and enjoyable experience. Note that they only accept cash for payments under 5,000 yen, so it's best to bring cash when dining for lunch.

It's been a while since I visited Kin Kao-san. I opted for the daily lunch special for 1000 yen, with an extra 100 yen for extra spiciness and 50 yen for a fried egg on top. My friend ordered the Pad Thai lunch (I forgot to take a picture of mine). In addition to the main dish, the lunch set also came with salad, vermicelli noodles, and soup. The Pad Thai had a nice balance of sweetness and wasn't too overpowering. The Ga Pao was a dry-style dish with a hint of basil, and it seemed like a flavor that would appeal to women. Personally, I prefer a stronger oyster sauce flavor. Of course, the rice served was jasmine rice. The half-cooked fried egg allowed for some flavor variation during the meal. The spiciness was advertised as "extra spicy," but it wasn't overwhelmingly hot. If you can handle a level 10 spiciness at a certain curry restaurant, then this level should be just right for you. The only downside was that the soup was lukewarm, but they were willing to heat it up upon request. Overall, I think it's delicious Thai cuisine. I will continue my search for the perfect Ga Pao in Kyoto! It seems like Thai restaurants are not very common in Kyoto, making it a bit challenging to find my ideal dish.

I also compile gourmet information on Instagram (@rmmk__). Please check it out! Thai restaurant in Shichijo, 【What I ate】- Yum Woon Sen (¥990) - Yum Pak Boon (¥990) - Shrimp Toast (¥790) - Gapao Rice (¥1,090) - Pad Thai (forgot the price...) The view from the window is beautiful on a sunny day, giving a sense of openness to the restaurant. The dishes are delicious, and if you like spicy food, you can have it made spicier for an additional fee, so be sure to try it! Personally, my favorite was probably the Gapao Rice! Pad Thai, Yum Woon Sen were also delicious though... (Actually, everything was delicious!)

At a Kyoto drinking spot, this was the second place we went to. Kin Kao had a delicious Soft Shell Crab Poo Nim dish - the soft shell crab can be eaten whole and is so tasty. We enjoyed picking at it, drinking, and finishing by pouring curry over rice - it was amazing! We also ordered the Cyclo Issan Yam Wun Sen and Tom Yum Kung, classic dishes, and enjoyed Vietnamese whiskey. The spiciness and strong alcohol were a stimulating combination for the brain, it was irresistible. This is a photo from a while ago, but I'm starting to crave going back. I highly recommend this place. Thank you for the delicious meal!

As a fan of Thailand, this restaurant caught my attention. The dishes are prepared by Thai chefs, which raises expectations. The menu is on a tablet! Cutting-edge? As someone who wants to speak Thai, it's disappointing that ordering is also done on a tablet. In a way, it feels like a fast food restaurant. The dishes use a lot of Thai ingredients, but they lack depth or something is missing. Very disappointing. The view, however, was amazing.

Double curry set. For 1450 yen, the amount of food is great ^ ^ Enjoy Thai cuisine while looking out at the Kamogawa River in a tatami room. The set includes a vegetable-filled green curry and a yellow curry with Japanese ingredients. It's interesting that the curry has thick fried tofu in it. The Thai cuisine was not too spicy and easy to eat.

I tried the "O" soup from Laos at #Kinkhao. I usually make dishes like Yam Wun Sen, Pak Boong Fai Daeng, and Tom Yum Goong at home, so this time I decided to try something different. The "O" soup, with its unique name, was light and refreshing, with a hint of herbs and spiciness that made it delicious. I also ordered the sticky rice to eat with the Thai and Laotian dishes, and it was served hot and chewy, complementing the meal perfectly. The Kanom Pang Na Kung, a shrimp bread in Thai style, was a hit with the kids, while the Pat Ta Lue Wun Sen, a stir-fried glass noodle dish, was a great side dish. And the Poo Nim Phad Pong Kari was a unique and delicious combination that I had never tried before. Overall, everything was delicious. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

This time in Kyoto, we wanted to try something different from afternoon tea and Western food, so we considered okonomiyaki and Thai cuisine. Since we were craving Pad Thai, we decided to visit this restaurant near Nijo Station. The place was quite popular with a good number of customers. The menu was extensive with various options. We ordered Pad Thai, fresh spring rolls, fried spring rolls, shrimp toast, and Larb Moo. The food was overall delicious and easy to eat, except for the Larb Moo which turned out to be extremely spicy. We regretted not asking for it to be made less spicy.

The Thai restaurant along the Kamo River had a wide variety of menu items, some of which I had never heard of before, making it a fun experience. Some of the dishes I tried were Yam Neam Thai sausage salad, Tom Kha Gai, stir-fried water spinach, Pu Phat Prik Thai soft shell crab stir-fried with black pepper, Yor Chuen Laos fried spring rolls, and Khao Pad Talay seafood fried rice. I was tired from work and wanted to treat myself with Thai food and beer, and I'm glad I made the reservation because it was delicious. If it was closer, I would definitely go again! Check out their Instagram @puribi518.

The weather is cloudy and perfect for walking, so I decided to explore the area around Nanzen-ji with my new Apple Watch. I arrived at Nijo Station and first stopped for lunch. While I thought about having a Kyoto-style lunch, I was in the mood for green curry, so I went to a Thai restaurant. As I crossed Nijo Bridge, I could see the yellow building on the other side where the restaurant was located on the second floor. I climbed the narrow stairs and entered the restaurant, where I had a clear view of the Kamogawa River from my tatami seat. I usually prefer Pad Thai over green curry because I don't like extremely spicy food, but today I ordered the Green Curry Lunch for 990 yen (tax included). The tray arrived with several small dishes including green curry, rice, salad, side dishes (pumpkin tempura, steamed chicken salad, shrimp crackers), soup, and a tapioca dessert. The green curry was small but packed with chicken, eggplant, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, and green peppers. It was just the right level of spiciness for me and very delicious. For those who enjoy spicier food, it may not be enough. The generous portion of green curry made the rice go down easily, but there was a bit of rice left over. The dessert was a coconut milk-based sweet with pumpkin and tapioca, which always surprises me in Thai cuisine. The lunch was satisfying for a woman in terms of portion size, and I left feeling full. It's a great restaurant where you can enjoy delicious Thai cuisine for under 1,000 yen while overlooking the Kamogawa River. There were also many luxurious lunch options with a variety of dishes for under 2,000 yen, although I couldn't take photos of the menu as it was not allowed.

I visited on a regular night. Due to COVID, there were fewer customers. I was surprised by the extensive menu. The selection of alcoholic drinks was also incredibly diverse. If it weren't for the state of emergency, I would have had even higher expectations. The menu was that impressive! The food was traditional Thai cuisine. The Gaeng Gai, Pad Thai, and Prawn Curry were all delicious!! And the cost performance was great!! I will definitely come back. Hopefully next time when we can drink alcohol again haha.

This is a restaurant run by Laotians. I visited after a long time, combining it with a visit to Sanjusangendo. The restaurant was still thriving despite the pandemic. For lunch, I ordered the Larb Moo (Savory Minced Pork Salad) and the Isan Piset Set (Special Isan Thai Lunch Plate). Isan refers to the northeastern region of Thailand, which is across the river from Laos. The set included Tom Yum Goong, Ping Gai, Khao Kha Moo, Het To, Fak Khong Ko, Tam Maak Hung, and dessert. It was a great value for money. After sightseeing in Kyoto, I visited again for dinner. This time, I only ordered Laotian dishes. I ordered the Or (Braised Chicken in Herbs), Yor Chuen (Laotian-style Spring Rolls), Khao Soi Lao (Laotian-style Dan Dan Noodles), Khao Piyak Sen (Laotian-style Udon in Sauce), and Sup No Mai (Bamboo Shoot Salad). The Yor Chuen, with the unique idea of wrapping vegetables in spring rolls, and the spiciness of Sup No Mai reminded me of my trip to Laos. In Laos, they use a lot of herbs and local ingredients in their simple and healthy dishes. Unlike other Southeast Asian countries, they mainly eat sticky rice as their staple food. The dishes included Larb and Or Lam, which are made with essential herbs like galangal, lemongrass, and padaek. The restaurant is located near Keihan Shichijo Kawaramachi Station, just across the bridge, and the interior is designed like a riverside terrace. The Kamo River flowing in front of us made us feel like we were dining by the Mekong River. I have compiled the dishes I received into a video, so please check it out if you're interested.【Shichijo Kawaramachi】Keen Khao

The staff didn't seem very welcoming, maybe because of COVID, but the cook thanked me in Thai on my way out, leaving a good impression. The food was authentic and used Thai ingredients, with a strong flavor profile. I ordered my favorite dish, Tom Yum Goong, along with Thai stir-fried noodles, and I was completely satisfied.

Pad Thai 950 yen Slightly sweet seasoned noodles with a smooth and chewy texture. Lemon, chili powder, and nam pla are a must. Tom Kha Gai S 890 yen Chicken coconut milk-based soup with plenty of lemongrass, releasing a fragrant aroma as you chew. My favorite dish this time. Pad Prig Khing Gai 950 yen Stir-fried red curry chicken. The slightly sweet curry has a mild spiciness. Khao Soi Lao 939 yen Laos-style tantan noodles. A light dish with chicken broth, slightly sweet meat miso, and rice noodles. It was not as rich and spicy as expected, a bit disappointing. Overall, I still love this restaurant! The variety of dishes is overwhelming, and the portion size is large, so I need to go back many more times!

I want to go out for a meal with the Kin Kao Aozu Cuisine Enthusiasts Club someday✨. The Khao Man Gai here is delicious - the rice is cooked perfectly and well-seasoned, and the highlight is definitely the Nam Jim (dipping sauce) which is of high quality. I would love to have the recipe✨. Eating the chicken and rice with this dipping sauce feels just like the authentic taste. The familiar Yam Wun Sen and Larb Moo are also excellent - the spiciness pairs well with local distilled spirits like Mekong Whiskey or Nep Moi. Drinking these high-proof local liquors alongside the spicy food brings to mind the landscapes of Thailand and Laos✨. It's a wonderful moment. It's really sad that the request for shorter business hours might be extended - honestly, it's heartbreaking because my favorite Thai restaurant closed due to the pandemic, so I really hope this place can make it through✨. Once we can go out to eat again, I'll spend a lot of money here!!! It's tough, but let's do our best to enjoy delicious food and drinks at a leisurely pace until that day comes✨. Thank you for the meal!!!

Pad Thai set (Pad Thai noodles set), with an added fried egg. Thank you for the meal! The restaurant is located near Keihan Shichijo Station, just across the Shichijo Bridge. It is on the 2nd floor with a great view overlooking the Kamo River. I visited right after the opening on a holiday. I was the third group to arrive, and it quickly became full. The lunch menu is extensive. I ordered the Pad Thai set (it seemed like about half of the customers also ordered Pad Thai). Thai cuisine may have a spicy image, but Pad Thai has a strong umami and sweetness. Of course, for those who like it spicy, there are also spices available for customization. It was delicious and good value for money. I would like to visit again if I have the chance.

After visiting Kaikado Cafe, I had some time before the restaurant I wanted to have dinner at opened. I decided to take a stroll and came across this place by the Kamo River. It had a nice atmosphere and good prices. Since I was craving Pad Thai, I didn't hesitate to go in. It was almost 6 pm, and the restaurant was already busy with three groups of customers. They even had reserved tables, but they managed to seat me. There were many delicious dishes on the menu, but since I had just eaten cake, I opted for a beer and Pad Thai. The name of the restaurant, "Kinkaao," means "to eat" in the local language. It was my first time trying Thai beer, and it was very easy to drink. The Pad Thai was flavorful and had plenty of ingredients. I hope to visit Thailand when the pandemic is over and travel restrictions are lifted.

It's about a 15-minute leisurely walk from Kyoto Station. Located along the Kamo River, you can enjoy your meal while overlooking the river if you sit by the window. The restaurant has tatami seating, so it's safe for children and elderly guests. Sometimes the staff's attitude can be a bit off, but it's one of the places that family and friends always request when they come to Kyoto. On this day, I had the lunch set. I ordered the Pad Thai lunch, the double curry lunch with green and yellow curry. I love Thai food and have been to Thailand many times, and this restaurant's dishes are close to the authentic taste, reasonably priced, and the best Thai restaurant I can recommend in Kyoto!

Once upon a time at Kin Kao in Kyoto, right next to Shichijo-Ohashi Bridge. The Larb Mu Laos and traditional minced meat salad from northeastern Thailand are incredibly delicious. The unique spices, herbs, and the perfect spiciness of the prik pong are outstanding. It has become one of my favorite dishes. It goes well with both alcohol and rice, making the drinks go down smoothly. And I finally tried the Thai-Chinese Khun Op Wun Sen that I wanted to eat. The Khao Man Gai Nam Chim at this restaurant is just incredibly delicious. Every dish is superbly tasty, so I highly recommend it. I must go back again soon. Thank you for the feast!!!
