I love Kimuraya's anpan, but I had never tried it at a cafe before, and I only vaguely knew that they had other menu items, so I was excited to visit. It's amazing that their anpan originated from yeast from sake instead of yeast from bread, which gives it a rich aroma. The bread is made on the upper floor of the same building, so you can enjoy it freshly made at a reasonable price.
The main store is on the first floor, with a shop, the cafe on the second floor, and a Western grill on the third floor. This time, I visited the cafe on the second floor. The interior has a retro coffee shop atmosphere with a counter and table seats, and it's spacious. Despite being a long-established store, the cute patterns on the wet towels and coasters made my heart flutter. It was a cute retro space. Moreover, with the glass windows by the window, natural light comes in, making it pleasant on sunny days. You can also enjoy the view of the Ginza streets from the table seats, giving it an open feel.
I had trouble deciding between the pie and anpan, so I had the staff help me decide. I ordered the following two items:
- Small shrimp cutlet sandwich: This was the most delicious small shrimp cutlet sandwich I've ever had. I have an image of cutlet sandwiches having a lot of filler, but this one was packed full of plump shrimp, which was impressive. It was served hot and freshly fried, which was delightful. The orle sauce, a blend of tomato ketchup and mayonnaise, had a mild sweet and sour taste that complemented the small shrimp nicely.
- Fruit sandwich: This is a limited menu item only available at the second-floor cafe. The fruits used vary depending on the season. It has a distinctive thin form, and a fork is provided, making it feel like a cake. The bread is a moist Danish pastry, and it uses rum, giving it a fragrant and slightly lighter taste compared to buttery Danish pastries. The cream is not just whipped cream but also includes cream cheese, giving it a rich and creamy texture. The sandwich contains strawberries, mangoes, and kiwis, all cut into large pieces, giving it a fresh and juicy taste.
Both items were so delicious that I might get addicted to sandwiches. I want to visit again to try other menu items that caught my eye. I also might end up buying something at the shop on the first floor on my way in and out... I hope to visit again in the near future.
