Visit on May 4, 2015, after 10:30 PM. I often use Toriki along Shijo Street in Kyoto, so this is my second visit to the store in Shijo Omiya. I hadn't written a review before because my previous impressions were not quite there, but this time my impression has improved, so I decided to write a review for the first time.
■ Characteristics of Toriki Group Each store skewers and grills the food on-site, so the taste can vary from store to store. In my experience with Toriki, including this store, I have only been to 5 stores, and I have noticed that there is a range in the size of the grilled meat and the quality of the grilling depending on the store. This time, after visiting this store, my evaluation has changed to consider it a pretty good store.
■ Response to Consumption Tax The price of 280 yen per item is displayed before tax. After adding the consumption tax, the price becomes 302 yen per item. With the consumption tax revision, the pre-tax prices remain the same, and only the increase in tax rate is reflected in the price adjustment (from 294 yen to 302 yen).
■ Recommended Items Received (Items to definitely order at Toriki are marked with ◎): - Edamame - Momo Kizoku Yaki Tare (Grilled chicken thigh with sauce) ◎ - Kimo Tare (Grilled chicken liver with sauce) - Heart Salt (Slightly salty) - Toriki's Tulip Karaage (Deep-fried chicken) - Cold Bukkake Soba (New menu, unexpectedly good flavor and texture) - Premium Malt's Medium ◎ The total bill was 2,114 yen.
■ Recommended Items at Toriki: - Speed Menu: Cabbage refill. It comes out quickly, and refills are free, so it's a must-order. - Grilled Items: Momo Kizoku Yaki Tare, Kimo, and Gyukushi are my personal top three grilled items. Especially, the sauce for Momo Kizoku Yaki is a masterpiece that balances affordability and quality. - Tori Kamameshi: Currently the strongest carb menu item. The variety of carb menu items has dramatically increased, so I would like to explore new favorites. - Alcohol: Draft beer.
■ Overall Review In the genre of grilled chicken, Toriki can be considered the strongest chain for the common people. Personally, I felt like I wanted to visit this store more often, so I wanted to make sure to mention that.
■ Bonus - Why is it so cheap? I think the reason for the high satisfaction of Toriki's price comparison lies in their focus on food cost control. Or rather, I think their ability to control food costs is too high. Major izakaya chains once flourished with the introduction of uniform pricing, but ultimately failed. Why? Because customers tend to order high-cost items in large quantities. As a result, although it was good at first, they gradually became unable to achieve the expected profits. On the other hand, Toriki has maintained a uniform pricing strategy while achieving success. The key points are twofold. One is the skillful rotation of high-cost items. The other is the skillful reduction of costs other than food costs, such as rent. When I looked at the menu again this time, items like Yamazaki Highball and Camembert Cheese Croquettes, which were my personal favorites, were no longer on the menu. I think the key to success lies in skillfully rotating relatively high-cost products. Also, they are adept at reducing costs other than food costs. To put it simply, the price of a restaurant is determined mainly by food costs, rent, labor costs, and utility costs. In the case of Toriki, they actively open stores in locations with low rents, such as underground or high floors of buildings. Our store is also on the 4th floor of a building. By opening stores in relatively low-rent locations, they minimize costs other than food costs and achieve attractive prices. Completely off topic, but the store's expansion policy is quite interesting. Hanamaru Udon and Sakura Suisan, for example, probably have a similar mindset to Toriki, actively opening stores in underground or non-street level locations. This confidence in competitive prices can be seen as the flip side of the coin. They believe that they can attract customers with the allure of the menu, even if the access is difficult. On the other hand, stores like Komoro Soba and Fuji Soba ===========
