On this day, my husband and I went our separate ways. Early in the morning, my husband took the Kintetsu Limited Express to Nara. Nara is his favorite area for exploring ancient tombs, shrines, and temples, and he has been visiting there frequently on days when we go our separate ways. I had a meetup to attend on this day. Before that, my friend and I, who were going to the meetup together, stopped by this cafe. The indoor seating was full, so we were guided to the terrace seating in front of the store. It was a very pleasant weather, so we could relax comfortably on the terrace. I had an iced tea, which was a straight tea with Earl Grey aroma and dice-shaped ice. It came with gum syrup, but I had it as it was. The meetup was on the opposite side of the road. As we were about to leave, I had a little accident as I didn't notice a small step. The staff quickly noticed and kindly helped me. Thank you for taking care of me. Thank you and see you again!

When you visit Asaichi, you can enjoy a morning set with the smell of freshly baked bread. The morning set includes scrambled eggs, salad, and three types of bread on one plate. The bread is homemade and is continuously baked in the store while you enjoy your morning meal. It's not too crowded in the morning, which I like, and I've only used this place for morning meals so far. The lunch menu also seems to be extensive.

After visiting the Avengers exhibition, we were planning to go straight to the Brian Eno exhibition, but the heat was unbearable so we decided to come in here. The homemade bread was delicious. The owners were very kind and gave us multiple glasses of water, which we were grateful for. Thank you for helping us.

Great place, Higashiyama is affordable. The breakfast was rich and the coffee was subtly delicious! I wonder if they bake the bread themselves because there were plenty of them, but the size was just right. In the morning, there were quite a few locals. I really like Higashiyama!

I decided to have breakfast at a slightly old-fashioned cafe along Sanjo Street near Higashiyama Sanjo Station. Inside, the atmosphere is calm and relaxing. The customers seem familiar with each other. I ordered the Morning Set for 700 yen, which came with 3 pieces of bread, salad, omelette, and a drink. The bread included croissant, sesame, and baguette, all freshly baked and delicious. The omelette and salad were standard. Overall, it was a satisfying meal before heading out for a stroll in the city.

On the way back after seeing the autumn leaves on Sanjo Street, I realized it was almost 2:30 pm and I hadn't had lunch yet, so I decided to stop by this place on a whim. I rarely walk around this area as I usually just drive by, so I had never heard of this restaurant before. I was looking for something light to eat, not too sweet, and my companion ordered the "yakiniku bento". The lunch menu seemed a bit pricey. I noticed they had homemade bread for 120 yen each, so I got the "tomato basil" and the "Mont Blanc" (I think that was the name). The "tomato basil" bread was warmed up for me. It was a slightly red bread with basil dots on top, crispy cheese with a salty kick, and a fluffy inside that made it seem like you could eat as much as you want. The yakiniku bento had thin slices of meat but the flavor matched well with the rice (was there sansho pepper in it?). The side dishes and salad were colorful and neatly arranged. The staff was also very friendly, and even though it was my first time there, I felt relaxed. I wish this place was closer to my neighborhood so I could visit more often.

I ordered a bread set where you can eat freshly baked bread at the shop. They gave me tongs and a basket, and I could choose my own bread and have it warmed up. The milk bread was fluffy and delicious. However, I honestly wanted to try the bread that was being baked right next to me at that moment. The fruit side dish seemed to be canned... I was surprised that almost everyone around me was foreign. There were many delicious options for lunch as well. It's a bit pricey, but it's Kyoto after all.

We took a stroll around Heian Shrine and on our way back, we stopped by a cafe called "Aru Penrose." They offer homemade bread and serve morning sets. My husband had a hot coffee, while I had a hot matcha latte. We also got a set with a fluffy chiffon cake. The chiffon cake was light and fluffy, and the rusk was delicious. The cafe is located at 126 Nishimachi, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto. They are open from 8:00 to 19:00, closed on Wednesdays.

I visited for lunch. It's a nice atmosphere. They have a variety of affordable lunch options like hamburger bento and grilled meat bento. The beef stew spaghetti comes with two pieces of bread, and you can choose from a wide selection at the counter. They warm it up for you so you get soft, fluffy bread.

Alpen Rose is located in Sanjo-dori and has been in business for nearly 40 years. The restaurant has a stylish and sophisticated atmosphere, with a mix of Western and modern elements. The interior has an antique feel with a touch of royal modernity. They also sell bread in a small glass case near the counter. I visited in the morning and chose a breakfast set that included salad, scrambled eggs, and three freshly baked breads. The breads included a cheese boule, a piece of baguette, and a Danish pastry with caramel on top instead of the croissant that was shown in the picture. The salad was fresh and colorful, but the breads were served cold when I was expecting them to be warm since they were advertised as freshly baked. The menu offers a variety of options, making it a cozy and welcoming cafe that is popular with locals and tourists alike.

I went to lunch with him. There were a lot of local old men and grandpas, I wonder? There were also couples who seemed like tourists. He ordered a sandwich and I ordered a grilled meat bowl. It's a normal order, isn't it funny haha. It had a spicy taste with a strong flavor of sansho pepper. The bowl was full of ingredients and very satisfying to eat! The retro atmosphere inside the store, with lots of bread lined up on the counter. I wonder if bread is their specialty? Next time, I'll try something more girly, like a sandwich haha.

I used my long-awaited lunch passport and explored the streets of Kyoto as a tourist. While the focus is on lunch in this book, I found a restaurant that has been in business for 41 years and decided to visit for breakfast. It is located within walking distance from my regular inn in Gion, so I went there to have my morning coffee. I have always been fond of the temples and shrines in the Higashiyama area, so I was aware of this restaurant's existence, although the signage was a bit vague. It seemed to be a typical Showa-era cafe with a variety of items on the menu and slightly higher prices, which made me hesitant to visit before. In the morning, there were more local regulars than tourists. The atmosphere was peaceful, and the two female staff members were very attentive. It was impressive to see continental tourists ordering meat udon and curry udon for breakfast (laughs). I opted for a set of three freshly baked bread rolls with coffee. The usual price is 750 yen, but with the lunch passport, it was only 500 yen. Normally, there are 12 types of bread, but in the morning, there were only six varieties available. I chose a croissant, a basil and tomato flavored roll, and a sugar-coated ball. The croissant was not flaky like a pastry but had a soft bread-like texture. The basil and tomato roll had a light flavor that was perfect for the morning. A cream-covered bean was also included, making it a satisfying set for breakfast. For someone used to drip coffee from a drink bar, the hand-drip coffee here tasted surprisingly delicious. This aspect alone captures a glimpse of Kyoto's culture. Many tourists start their sightseeing from Sanjo Station, but why not take a moment to relax before that?

I visited "Aru Pen ROSE" in December last year and decided to visit again because the menu seemed well-prepared. The menu photos outside the restaurant were updated and looked appealing. I was torn between choosing the daily special or the "Ankake Yakisoba" for ¥850, but I opted for the latter. The restaurant has 6 counter seats, 3 tables for 4, and 2 tables for 2. There were 3 staff members, and the customers ranged from tourists to business people and couples. I noticed that bread was available for customers to take at the counter, indicating a self-service payment system. A couple next to me ordered the daily lunch special with a hamburger (salmon was also an option), which looked delicious. After about 10 minutes, a seaweed and egg soup was served, followed by the "Ankake Yakisoba" after 5 minutes. The dish had a decent amount of vegetables and slightly thick noodles, but I wished it had more seafood like shrimp or squid. Overall, the cost-performance ratio, taste, service, and atmosphere were decent. For a casual meal in a tourist area, this restaurant, along with "MIYAKO," may be a convenient option. Rating: 3.5 stars (70/100)

The food at the Westin Hotel is a bit pricey for the portion size, but the taste is just okay, so I use it as a substitute for a regular meal. They offer various types of set meals at night, but I highly recommend the Keema Curry. It was surprisingly authentic. The naan is served piping hot because they bake it fresh after the curry is ready (so be careful, it's hot to touch). The other set meals are average, but the homemade pickles and potato salad as side dishes are delicious. I believe they use Australian beef, so I wouldn't recommend the yakiniku. The bread is not freshly baked, it seems like they just reheat it.

I aimed for a cheap morning meal at a certain chain restaurant, but it was closed. I ended up finding another place for breakfast. The morning set cost 730 yen. The coffee had a sharp acidity to it. They served freshly baked bread, with three pieces along with scrambled eggs and salad. The atmosphere was okay, with the owner and a female staff member giving me enough space. The interior had a retro design that seemed to have been maintained since the Showa era. The walls had a yellowish tint, indicating that smoking might be allowed. If there weren't any other customers, I would have preferred to sit at the outdoor tables.
