The scene of the Engetsu-tei garden covered in snow for the first time was breathtaking. Enjoying matcha in the crisp winter air was truly special.

I love winter temples. Walking through the quiet and serene atmosphere is so pleasant! On this day, I visited Tofukuji Temple and stopped by the Sesshu Garden at Funda-in along the way. You can admire the famous stone garden "Crane and Turtle Garden" created by Sesshu. While gazing at the garden, I enjoyed matcha and senbei from Kameya Yoshinaga, which was inspired by Sesshu (admission fee and matcha for 900 yen). Despite the cold, the garden was dignified and gave me chills. The matcha I had was deeply satisfying, though a bit bitter, and the thin senbei had an elegant taste inspired by Sesshu. I may not be well-versed in history or art, but there are things that move me just by looking at them...

Located about a 7-minute walk from either Tofukuji Station or Tobakaido Station, Snowshoe Temple is a hidden gem in the bustling Tofukuji area, known for its serene dry landscape garden. Designed by the famous ink painter Sesshu during the late Muromachi period, the garden, known as the Crane and Turtle Garden, is a peaceful oasis where you can enjoy matcha tea and traditional sweets anytime. The matcha is a rich blend from the longstanding tea shop Horaido, while the sweets are a special creation from Kameya Yoshinobu. The view of the meticulously crafted white sand, moss-covered rocks, and crane and turtle motifs in the garden is a sight to behold, offering a tranquil escape from the crowds. The temple, also known as Snowshoe Temple, is open year-round and offers a unique opportunity to experience a slice of traditional Kyoto culture. Don't miss the chance to relax and unwind in this serene setting.
