Located near Kyoto Kawaramachi Station, just off of Pontocho, is the okonomiyaki restaurant "Ajinoya." Here, you can enjoy a unique okonomiyaki that differs from the traditional Osaka style. On this particular day, I had originally planned to go to an izakaya in Pontocho, but the standing bar I wanted to visit did not take reservations and had a long line outside. After walking over 10,000 steps, I decided to change my plans and ended up at Ajinoya, drawn in by the sign for "negiyaki" (green onion okonomiyaki).
I started with a beer and some appetizers while waiting for the negiyaki to be cooked:
- Tororo (grated yam)
- Edamame
For the negiyaki, I chose the option of either squid or simmered beef tendon, and I went with the beef tendon. The staff cooked it for us on the table's iron plate. Once it was done, they quickly brushed on the special soy sauce-based sauce for the negiyaki. The batter was fluffy and soft, and it paired well with the abundant Kyoto green onions. The beef tendon had a rich flavor and was quite delicious.
I noticed another interesting item on the menu, the "Kyoto-style okonomiyaki with mochi and natto." I was intrigued by the combination of natto in Kyoto, so I asked the staff about it. They explained that it has been a long-standing menu item. I decided to give it a try:
- Kyoto-style okonomiyaki with mochi and natto
The natto was not overpowering, but it added a unique chewy texture. What surprised me more was the spiciness of the sauce when I made it spicy. It had a strong kick of chili pepper. While the combination may seem unusual for okonomiyaki, it worked well as a snack with alcohol. I enjoyed it as a side dish with my highball.
As we were leaving, there were two groups of customers contemplating whether to go in or not. It seems like a fairly popular spot. Overall, it was a satisfying meal.

"Kyoto-style green onion grilled dish (with Kujyo green onion, simmered pork slices). There is not much pork slices. It lacks the fluffy texture. Plenty of Kujyo green onion is included. Pork kimchi yakisoba. The noodles are delicious. There is not much pork. There are hardly any menu options other than okonomiyaki and yakisoba."

End-of-year outing as usual to Kyoto. For dinner, we went to an okonomiyaki restaurant in Kyogoku.
19:05 Entered, seated, and placed our order
19:15 Food arrived
[Summary]
Okonomiyaki [Mochi and Cheese] 1050 yen
Okonomiyaki with a diameter of around 160mm and a thickness of 20mm. It had mochi and a rich cheese flavor. The cheese was smooth and quite delicious.
Pork Kimchi 1050 yen
Well-balanced with a sweet and spicy fermented taste. It had a fluffy texture with a good amount of air inside.
Spicy Negiyaki [with tendon] 1150 yen
Spicy with green onions, tendon, and red chili peppers. The crispy green onions and sweet tendon were a great combination. It had a moderate level of spiciness that made you sweat a bit.
Salt Yakisoba 1100 yen
Yakisoba with a delicious salty flavor. It contained cabbage, pickled ginger, pork, bean sprouts, carrots, and chives. The slightly thick noodles were chewy and tasty.

"Ami no Ie" is a long-established okonomiyaki restaurant in Ura Teramachi, Kyoto. I have a rule for myself this year to go for okonomiyaki at least once a week. On this day, after work, I headed to the Ura Teramachi area in Kyoto. This area is where I used to go shopping for second-hand clothes during high school, and I remembered there was an okonomiyaki restaurant here - "Ami no Ie." It has been around for quite some time, and I found out that it was established in 1950, making it a well-established restaurant. Although there is a famous restaurant with the same name in Osaka, they are likely unrelated. The restaurant has a traditional atmosphere and seems appealing to tourists. However, due to the COVID-19 situation, it felt a bit lonely. The staff also seemed a bit indifferent... I hope things go back to normal soon. It's worth noting that the restaurant does not allow entry for small children, strollers, or carry-on bags. If you have children or travel luggage, you will not be allowed to enter, so please be aware of this. It seems that some aspects of the restaurant have not been updated to accommodate modern needs. I tried the Salt Yakisoba for 1100 yen, the Spicy Negiyaki for 1150 yen, and the Modern-yaki (pork) for 1050 yen. The Salt Yakisoba was a light dish with salt sauce, typical of Kyoto. The Spicy Negiyaki, a specialty made with Kujo green onions and chili peppers, had a good balance of spiciness and soy sauce flavor. The Modern-yaki was a thin, Osaka-style okonomiyaki, which is common in the city. I wonder where I should go for okonomiyaki tomorrow.

Ham and cheese okonomiyaki♪ It has a simple taste with no particular features. I would prefer if they could make the mayonnaise optional.

Although it was my first time here, this restaurant feels strangely nostalgic. The food was delicious. It had been a while since I last had okonomiyaki outside, but I realized how nice it can be once in a while.

(2017.08)--- Revisited. This time was my second stop at this place, and I ate exactly what I wanted. It seems like a must-visit spot whenever I travel to Kyoto, haha. (2016.08)----- Revisited. It feels nostalgic. It has been quite a while since my last visit, around 5 years ago. I have tried okonomiyaki at a few places, but this one is a favorite of my mother's, so whenever we come to Kyoto (together), we always end up here. My memories were a bit hazy, but I finally found my way back. Ordering the same menu as last time? It seems like we really love this place. (2011.10)----- After wandering around and exploring, I stumbled upon this place. I passed through Nishiki Market, reached Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine, strolled around aimlessly, then walked through Pontocho...and eventually got hungry, so we came back here. There were two restaurants side by side, and the family crest caught my eye, so we decided to go in. It doesn't matter how we ended up here. So, okonomiyaki... I was excited to have it again after a long time. I wanted Kyoto vegetables, so I got 'Kujyo Negi,' and I also wanted some meat, so I got 'Pork.' We shared and happily devoured them together. "Want to try the yakisoba too?" And that's how it went. Maybe we ate too much? But when you drink, you get hungry, right? The negi-yaki was good, but the soy sauce one was even better. (I think the special sauce was more soy sauce-based...or something like that, I think. Or am I mistaken?) We were full and satisfied. Later, I noticed that there was an "Approach Map" at the front of the register, with a booklet called "<Ura Teranaka no Machi> Delicious Food Spots" inside. (It contains information on 6 different shops.)

Wow, what a day at the Gion Festival! After the rain stopped, it was really humid on the day of the Yamahoko Parade. I was craving a beer, so I searched for a place where I could have one. After wandering around, I ended up at Bake Cheese Tart Kyoto. However, my throat was so dry that I needed to find a place where I could have a beer. I stumbled upon Ajinoya, a okonomiyaki restaurant. The place was crowded, but I managed to find a table. I ordered a Kirin beer, Kyoto-style negiyaki with beef tendon, and pork. The food was delicious, but the portions seemed a bit small. The atmosphere was lively, with Korean tourists adding to the excitement. It felt like I was in Seoul for a moment. Overall, it was a fun and satisfying experience.

Saiken-chan wasn't quite satisfied with the drinks at the previous place, so she ended up at this shop! The interior is not very spacious, but despite the odd hour, it was crowded with tourists from Korea or China. There was only one seat available, so we were lucky. Planning to just have a light snack, we looked at the menu. Even though we were already full, we ended up ordering two items because the server said it's one item per person. Our order included pork balls, grilled leeks (beef tendon simmered in sauce), and two draft beers. Once we ordered, they brought the ingredients and cooked them in front of us. They were finely chopped, so they cooked quickly. Once they were done, we added our own sauce - a sweet one for the pork balls and soy sauce for the grilled leeks. The beef tendon was well-seasoned and delicious, but there was a bit lacking. The pork balls were a bit lacking in tenderness and could have used more ingredients. Overall, for the price, the satisfaction level was low. The shop is open all day, but as customers left, we were the only ones left and felt a bit uncomfortable.
