Today, I had work at Toji Temple again, so I decided to have lunch at a restaurant I haven't tried yet. I walked about 10 minutes from Toji Temple Station to a place called Yamada. Inside, there was only one elegant lady managing the place. The atmosphere was like an old-fashioned coffee shop, very cozy. I ordered the second most popular dish, the hamburger lunch set, as I couldn't find the number one popular dish on the menu. When I asked the lady about it, she said, "You'll have to experience it yourself" with a smile. The food arrived in just 5 minutes! The meal included barley rice, a generous portion of miso soup, and a salad with yuzu dressing. The hamburger was topped with a tomato sauce with a hint of acidity, which was delicious. The tamagoyaki (rolled omelette) was perfectly seasoned. The miso soup had nanohana (rapeseed blossoms), which was a nice touch for spring. When they brought the meal, there was Kyoto vinegar on the table. I asked the lady how to use it, and she suggested adding it to the miso soup or hamburger for extra flavor. I tried a little in the miso soup, and it was good, but I couldn't tell much difference when I added it to the hamburger. It was a delightful time spent with the witty lady. I was very satisfied with the meal. Today's lunch was at "YAMADA", a cafe located near Keihan Higashiyama-Gojo Station on the way to Izumi-dera Temple. The building looks like a hidden treasure, and without the sign for set meals, you wouldn't think it's a food establishment. Upon entering, the atmosphere is like a snack bar. The menu offers light meals and set meals. I decided to try the recommended "Hamburger Set Meal" for 1000 yen. The menu on the wall has catchy phrases like "Perfect for someone special like you!!" for Hayashi Rice and "For the slightly naughty old man?!" for Curry Rice. The Hamburger Set Meal arrived, and it was impressive. The rice was mixed with barley, giving it a chewy texture. The miso soup had a unique and delicious flavor. They also provided a high-quality vinegar called Senchozu, but I wasn't sure how to use it. The hamburger came with a sunny-side-up egg on top. The meat, made from black wagyu beef, had a rich flavor. The slightly sour sauce added a nice touch. However, I couldn't help but be curious about the menu's No.2 item. When I asked the lady running the place, she humorously replied that she was No.1. It was a mysterious space with a hidden exterior, a snack bar interior, and a playful lady in charge.

I found this restaurant by chance. The hot pot restaurant I wanted to go to was crowded and noisy, so I decided to walk around and stumbled upon a sign for hamburgers. I checked Google Maps and saw that many people had written that it was "delicious," so I decided to give it a try since it was not crowded. The interior of the restaurant had a retro snack bar feel. There were two small tables that could seat four people each (more for drinking than eating), and one table for six people (but it would be tight). There were only two counter seats, with a lovely gray-haired hostess and a TV for customers behind the counter. They offered several lunch options, with the recommended dishes being the hamburger and ginger pork. The hamburger lunch came with salad, fried egg, miso soup, and pickles. It was a cold day, and the hostess kindly offered to switch the miso soup for hot sake lees soup. It warmed me up nicely. The ginger pork was tender and flavorful, and the hamburger was juicy and delicious. It wasn't gourmet hamburger, but it was a reasonably priced and tasty lunch. The hostess's warm and friendly atmosphere added to the overall experience. Hamburger, ginger pork, and hot sake lees soup ===========

It's a repeat visit, this time for the yakiniku set meal. The rice has a gentle flavor.

On this unusually cool day in mid-August 2018, I stumbled upon a quaint cafe with a traditional Japanese atmosphere near the famous temple Sennyu-ji. The cafe was run by a friendly senior owner and had a cozy lounge-like interior with a few tables and a counter. The menu offered a variety of drinks like coffee, tea, and cafe au lait, as well as dishes such as homemade hamburger set, grilled meat set, omurice, and beef curry. I ordered an iced coffee, which had a classic taste reminiscent of old-fashioned cafes. The quiet and relaxing atmosphere, along with the kind service from the owner, made for a pleasant experience. Located near the Sennyu-ji temple, this hidden gem is a great spot to take a break and enjoy a meal or snack. The cafe has been around for about 30 years and is non-smoking, catering to those who prefer a smoke-free environment. A perfect place to unwind after exploring the foothills of Higashiyama and visiting Sennyu-ji temple.
