I regularly visit Katsukura Shijo-Higashinotoin branch. About 30 minutes after opening, it's always full. Lately, there are many foreign tourists, with over half of the customers being foreigners today. The menu is constantly updated, making it hard to decide what to order, but this time I chose the classic jumbo shrimp katsu, pork fillet katsu, shrimp katsu, and minced pork katsu. The jumbo shrimp was plump and juicy. The pork fillet katsu went really well with the sesame sauce. The minced pork katsu was also juicy and delicious. You can get unlimited refills of rice, miso soup, and cabbage, so you can eat until you're full.

Today I was working in Shijo Karasuma again, and I was so hungry because my lunch break was late. Surprisingly, there was no wait at Katsukura, where there are usually many customers waiting. Finally, I was able to enter the curtain of the famous Katsukura Tonkatsu at the Shijo Higashinakano store! The interior has slightly dim lighting, giving it a chic and sophisticated feel. It has a calm atmosphere typical of Kyoto, renovated from a machiya. I ordered the 80-gram loin cutlet, but honestly, I was more focused on the rice and salad as the main part of the meal (^^;; At Katsukura, the tea is delicious! This hojicha tea is amazing, perfect for ochazuke! The pickles are shibazuke, making it perfect for stealing rice, haha. The salad, rice, and miso soup are all-you-can-eat, and the quality of the taste is top-notch! By the way, the rice is barley rice. The salad has a rougher cut than before, but the yuzu dressing is delicious! Today's miso soup was a hit with the red dashi! I had three bowls of rice and two servings of salad, haha. The loin cutlet has a crispy coating, it's amazing, Katsukura's quality is incredible. I seriously think it's worth going back, thank you for the meal! Tonkatsu is not my strong suit, but this three-tiered pork loin here is so tender and delicious, with a crispy coating. Even though I'm not confident in this area, I can tell that the quality at Katsukura is top-notch. The atmosphere is also great, with a stylish interior using traditional townhouse architecture. Katsukura is run by the Fukunaga Corporation, which also operates many other Katsukura locations mainly in the Kansai region. By the way, their neighboring Italian restaurant, Santa Maria Novella, is also part of the same group. Honestly, in terms of value for money, I think Katsukura is the better choice compared to Santa Maria.

I visited Shimogamo Shrine for the annual New Year's visit as usual! After safely paying my respects, I took a walk from Demachiyanagi and did some leisurely window shopping. By the time I reached Shijo, I started feeling hungry, so I decided to have dinner at Katsukura, my go-to spot. Despite it being in the evening, there was quite a wait. But since I love "katsu," I decided to wait in line! I couldn't resist ordering the delicious oyster fry, and this year I also tried the large chawanmushi. So, I enjoyed my usual set meal with some additional dishes. The white miso soup at Katsukura is also heartwarmingly delicious. It was a delightful meal! Thank you.

I went to Nara to start learning something new this year, and on my way back, I decided to stop by Kyoto for some more studying. I searched on Google for a place to have lunch before heading home, and found this highly-rated restaurant. It had a Kyoto-like facade and a modern interior. I chose the "Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl" from the menu. It arrived in about 10 minutes! The pork cutlet was delicious! It was juicy and the meat juice spread throughout my mouth! The cabbage and miso soup were free refills, and the cost performance was great!

I dropped by for lunch on a regular day. The atmosphere of the machiya (traditional townhouse) is nice. It was quite busy but I was seated quickly. The turnover is also relatively fast. I had the daily special for 1240 yen. It included one soy milk cream croquette and two pork cutlets. It also came with miso soup, cabbage, pickles, and unlimited rice refills. The crispy coating and tender pork cutlets were delicious. They went well with the original sauce and ground sesame. The shredded cabbage with Japanese dressing was also tasty. The miso soup with eggplant and fried tofu was comforting. The pickled Hiroshima greens paired nicely with the rice. I thoroughly enjoyed the crispy pork cutlet. The soy milk cream croquette was okay, so next time I'd like to try the minced cutlet or croquette. Thank you for the meal.

When it comes to tonkatsu in Kyoto, Katsukura is the place to go. I recently visited the restaurant in response to a request to go there after a long time. There are several branches, but this time I chose the one near Daimaru. I ordered two different types of tonkatsu to compare: the Higo Asobi Buta Katsu from Kumamoto, 120g for 2340 yen, and the Sangen Buta Katsu from Hirata Ranch, 120g for 2140 yen. In the past, there used to be more affordable options, but now they also offer branded pork. The Higo pork had a firm texture with a rich flavor, while the Sangen pork was tender and light, making it very easy to eat. I was happy to see that the style of free refills for cabbage, rice, and miso soup has not changed. I definitely want to go back again.

Visited Shimogamo Shrine for Hatsumode. Due to the influence of the coronavirus, there were fewer people, making it easy to pay respects. Afterwards, had a late lunch at Katsukura. Opted for the seasonal recommendation, my favorite oyster fry set ♡ It was piping hot with a crispy exterior and juicy inside! The soup with white miso warmed me up. The freshly ground sesame and sauce were a nice touch, and I enjoyed every bite. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

This is it! When it comes to Kansai-style tonkatsu, it's gotta be Katsukura! The crispy coating, tender cabbage with yuzu dressing (why don't they have dressing for tonkatsu in Kanto!?) and barley rice with miso soup with white miso mixed in... It's perfect. It's a shame you can't find this kind of tonkatsu in Kanto! Baby stroller entrance allowed, kids menu available.

Ordered a set of rosukatsu and the smallest 80-gram portion was much smaller than expected, with rice and miso soup included for 1300 yen. The restaurant was full of customers, but the seating felt cramped and uncomfortable due to the spacious layout. This chain has several locations in Kyoto, but compared to another tonkatsu chain I tried in a different prefecture, the cost performance is significantly lower. The prices, quality, and customer service are all lacking, despite the upscale appearance. The tonkatsu wasn't juicy or flavorful, and lacked the sweetness of the oil. I used to occasionally get takeout bento from here and didn't pay much attention to the taste, but this time the poor cost performance stood out. It seems that just eating with the expectation of a chain restaurant with a lot of foot traffic is the way to go. "When I was a child, the 'Big Katsu' I used to eat was actually made from white fish paste like cod, not meat." Bon appétit.

I went for a late lunch when I was in Kyoto for work. The nearby traditional Kyoto-style townhouse restaurant was closed at 3 pm, so I ended up at this lovely tonkatsu restaurant. I ordered the prawn and shishito pepper yuba croquette, as well as the pork fillet cutlet set. The prawns were firm and paired well with the yuba. The shishito pepper wasn't spicy. The pork cutlet was tender and easy to eat. The sauce seemed to be of high quality. I would like to come back again.

I always get takeout from this place and rarely eat inside, but I had a meal inside for the first time in a while. As always, it was delicious and crispy. It's a popular restaurant that has always been busy, but with the recent boom in foreign tourists, it's even more crowded during meal times. As a big fan of tonkatsu, it's a place I want to visit regularly.

It is a chain restaurant with several locations nationwide. This was my first visit as I had never tried it before. The interior of the restaurant was calm and the service was attentive, offering frequent refills of tea and cabbage. I ordered the 120g Three-Element Pork Loin cutlet, which was recommended by the restaurant. The cabbage was finely chopped and crunchy, with a high level of freshness, and the yuzu dressing was delicious. I ended up getting seconds because it was so good! The pork loin cutlet was juicy, flavorful, and tasty. You can mix the sauce and ground sesame seeds, but I found it most delicious with just mustard. Thank you for the meal.

On the first day of Reiwa era, my family of four went sightseeing in Kyoto. Our last stop was Katsukura, which was my wife's request. We arrived at 18:30 and the restaurant was already full. We placed our order at 18:35 and the food arrived at 18:50.
Before I talk about the food, I want to mention that the art by Hideki Kimura on the walls was really cool.
For our meal, we ordered the Jumbo Prawn and Three-Kind Pork Loin Set (with set meal) which included rice, white miso soup, a large prawn cutlet, a light pork loin cutlet, and a set of shredded cabbage. Although it's a tonkatsu restaurant, I was most impressed by the miso soup. The vegetable-wrapped tofu cutlet had a beautiful presentation and a variety of textures and flavors.
The Jumbo Prawn and Three-Kind Pork Loin Set cost 2480 yen (+ 400 yen for the set meal) and came with rice, miso soup, a large prawn cutlet, three pork loin cutlets, and shredded cabbage. The miso soup was rich with lots of ingredients and I couldn't resist getting a refill. The jumbo prawn cutlet was about 20mm thick and 150mm long, with a crispy coating and a juicy prawn inside. It was satisfyingly large and delicious. The three pork loin cutlets, each about 120x40mm and 10mm thick, were also crispy with a light coating and no fatty parts, making them light and tasty. The shredded cabbage was fresh and crunchy, with free refills.
We also ordered the Vegetable-Wrapped Tofu Cutlet for 400 yen, which consisted of three beautifully presented cutlets with various textures and flavors that were delicious.

I recently went to Katsukura near Daimaru in Kyoto Shijo. It was crowded during lunchtime so I had to wait a little bit. After about 5 minutes, I was seated and ordered the pork loin cutlet set with an option of grated yam. The pork cutlet had a crispy coating and the meat was tender and delicious. The miso soup was made with white miso in a Kyoto style, which added a nice touch of Kyoto flavor to the meal. Thank you for the meal!

I arrived at the restaurant from the 20th exit of Karasuma Station in about 2 minutes on foot. It's super close! I occasionally see tonkatsu restaurants where you can have unlimited rice, miso soup, and cabbage, but here the miso soup is amazing! It's filled with so many ingredients that it's hard to believe it's unlimited. There are lotus root, fried tofu, and various other ingredients in the soup, with a rich broth. I had three refills! The shredded cabbage is very fine, almost like threads, and goes well with the refreshing yuzu dressing. As for the tonkatsu, it was tender and crispy. I prefer a thicker sauce than tonkatsu sauce, but as an active eater in my forties, I felt the portion was a bit small. Next time, I'll order an extra serving.

On December 5, 2018, I had some business in Kyoto and visited Katsukura, a tonkatsu restaurant located on the west side of Daimaru on Shijo Street for lunch. It was my first visit to Katsukura in about 20 years, although I used to frequent it when I lived in Kansai. The restaurant has a traditional Kyoto-style appearance both on the outside and inside, which I quite like. The daily set meal for 1,180 yen includes a choice between vegetable-wrapped fried pork cutlet and 80g of loin or 60g of tenderloin. I hesitated between the tenderloin and the loin but ended up choosing the loin. First, sesame seeds and a grinding stick were brought to the table. I ground the sesame seeds and mixed them with the sauce provided on the table, which came in both sweet and spicy varieties. The fried pork cutlet arrived shortly after, served with a generous portion of cabbage. The loin cutlet was crispy, with just the right amount of fat, and tasted delicious when paired with the sesame sauce. Refills of cabbage and rice were complimentary, and after getting seconds of both, I left feeling satisfied. It was a great tonkatsu meal for under 1,000 yen! Thank you for the meal!

Overall, it's a great option for lunch. A bit pricey for everyday, but worth it. The shrimp and pork cutlets were delicious, and the cabbage was plentiful. I recommend eating half the rice to watch your carb intake. I'd like to come here twice a week with this eating style. However, the seating is cramped, which is expected in Kyoto. Also, the interior is too dark. I wish it were brighter, especially for those with poor eyesight like myself.

The day after, I met up with a friend for a trip and stayed in Kyoto the night before. We had dinner and decided to eat moderately since we planned to have a slightly luxurious meal the next day. I chose Katsukura because I had eaten at another branch during my solo trip to Kyoto before, so I felt reassured. I ordered a set of shrimp fry and pork cutlet with a glass of draft beer.

This restaurant carefully calculates the tonkatsu with sauce. The meat is delicious. In addition, the two types of sauce and the flavor of hot mustard and ground sesame seeds make it enjoyable and never boring. It's a place I want to visit every time I come to Kyoto.
