I purchased this bento box at the Kyoto Isetan basement before and it was delicious, so I bought it again at the Daimaru Kyoto store. Shimogamo Charyo is a long-established Kyoto cuisine tea kaiseki restaurant. The Oyashiki Kyoto Kobako (1188 yen) is a beautifully colored bento box. The contents of the side dishes are: dashimaki tamago, simmered soybeans, koya tofu, sweet potato lemon-flavored simmered dish, and more. The rice included dashi rice and chirimen sansho rice. The side dishes were all elegantly seasoned and very delicious. I especially liked the ganmodoki and zuiki salad.

I came to Daimaru Kyoto for shopping and bought a bento box for dinner. The location of Shozan Charyo is between "Izue" on the left and "Kicho" on the right, giving off a different atmosphere compared to the deli section. The bento box from Shozan Charyo is relatively affordable compared to bento boxes from high-end restaurants. However, it is about 20-30% more expensive than bento boxes from the deli section. I tried the Kyoto Miyabi Bento (1040 yen) and it definitely has a luxurious feel to it. I personally like bento boxes that can be eaten at room temperature, and this bento box is perfect for that. You can eat it as it is without needing to warm it up in the microwave, making it ideal for a late-night snack.

I have always admired this Kyoto kaiseki restaurant. However, I never had the opportunity to dine there. Last autumn, I saw their bento boxes being sold out at JR Kyoto Isetan, so this time I decided to buy one. Since I don't need rice, I chose a box with only side dishes. It was a beautifully arranged assortment, but I understand that it's different from dining at the actual restaurant. My husband and I enjoyed tasting the dishes at home. The flavors were elegant and typical of Kyoto cuisine, but overall, it was just okay. I hope to dine at the restaurant someday.

I had lunch on a holiday in March 2019. Today, I am in Kyoto, a city I visit for sightseeing a few times a year. I bought a bento box for lunch and am enjoying the beginning of the cherry blossom season in Kyoto. I believe the Kyoto Miyabi Bento was priced at just over 1000 yen. The main dish was bamboo shoot rice, which was in season and had a mild bitterness with delicious seasoning. The simmered dish and rolled omelette had a Kyoto-style dashi flavor and were also delicious.

The bento lunch box provided at the company's sports day was quite elegant. I thought it was a nice touch to have such a fancy bento box. We rented a gym and after working up a sweat, I had mixed feelings about the bento box as a post-exercise meal, but it was delicious. The shiitake mushrooms were tasty, and although the scallops, which I really wanted to eat, were taken by someone else, overall I was satisfied. Let's do our best in the second half, and thank you for the nourishing bento box to help us recover from fatigue!

I visited in June 2018. The place is located in the basement of Daimaru in Kyoto. I bought the Kyoto Bento from Shimogamo Charyo because it looked beautiful and delicious. It cost 2,700 yen excluding tax. When I ate it at home, it had various ingredients and was delicious. It included seasonal mixed rice, fish, boiled vegetables, duck meat, and warabi mochi. Everything was lightly seasoned and tasty. I recommend the Kyoto Bento from Shimogamo Charyo.

In the basement of Kyoto Daimaru, there is a bento shop from Shimogamo Charyo. It is located in a corner of an area where various deli shops are lined up. I visited during a trip and bought a bento here because I couldn't leave my accommodation due to babysitting and errands. The bento cost a little over 2,000 yen and contained a selection of elegant Japanese dishes. You can also choose takikomi gohan (seasoned rice) as an option. It was a delicious bento that exuded the essence of Kyoto.

My wife bought a bento box from Shozan Charyo at Kyoto Daimaru. The bento box is called "Aoi" and costs ¥1296 (tax included). It includes shrimp, smoked duck, herring and kombu rolls, crab-flavored dumplings, dashimaki, simmered gluten, crab-flavored vinegar dish, assorted simmered vegetables, grilled mackerel with yuzu sauce, and more. It's a great deal to enjoy the flavors of Shozan Charyo at this price. Delicious!

If you go to Kyoto, there is something that a friend asked me to buy. It may be sold out at Isetan Kyoto Station store. On the way to dinner at Emboka from Nishiki Market, it should also be available at Daimaru. What I received was the following:
- Ryotei Powder Soy Sauce 8g x 3 bags 864 yen
It was put in a beautiful light blue paper bag, and it will last for about six months, making it perfect for giving as a souvenir. What's great is that it's light and doesn't take up much space. Of course, I also bought it for home use. The yuzu and ichimi chili pepper work well together. It has a perfect balance without being too overpowering. It's delicious with tempura or white fish sashimi, but it can also be mixed into egg mixture for cooking, drizzled over cold tofu with sesame oil, or used to season stir-fried vegetables. The possibilities are endless. If you sprinkle it on, even chilled tomatoes taste like a ryotei dish (a bit exaggerated...). It was also suggested to pour it over vanilla ice cream, which sounds delicious. After this, Tokyu Plaza opened in Ginza, and Shimogamo Charyo joined. When I visited Maesan, a Japanese sake bar, I found powder soy sauce near the register, but I forgot to look at it and left because it was table service. A search on Tabelog shows that Shimogamo Charyo is also in Isetan Shinjuku, so you may be able to purchase it there as well.

I had the opportunity to enjoy this bento for the first time in a while. Although I have never been to the actual store, I have heard that the main store is famous for its exquisite dishes and tableware. It is a renowned establishment in Kyoto. The restaurant itself seems to hold great significance, beyond just the delicious food it offers. Not only does it serve delicious dishes, but also provides a harmonious experience with its tableware, hanging scrolls, garden views, seasonal ingredients, and the meaning behind each ingredient. Unfortunately, I have not visited the main store yet, so this time I am trying out their bento. The elegant presentation and the attention to ingredients give a strong impression of a traditional Kyoto restaurant. The grilled fish was of a high standard, not typically found in bento boxes. The rice seemed slightly bland in flavor, but I understand that this is common in bento boxes. Overall, both the appearance and taste reflect the traditional Kyoto style.

I went on a short trip to Kyoto and visited Daimaru Kyoto. I explored the basement food floor and bought a bento box from Shimogamo Charyo before noon. It was a colorful hexagonal bento box. It looked too beautiful to eat. Let's use it to fill our stomachs for now. The basement food floor was bustling with people.

I was looking for a bento box for dinner and found a delicious one at Shimogamo Charyo. I chose the Vegetable Kyoto Bento, which is centered around vegetables and was reasonably priced compared to other options at the restaurant. I could choose between bamboo shoot rice and shredded dried bonito and sansho pepper rice, which they packed for me on the spot. The side dishes were all elegantly seasoned and very tasty. I would definitely like to buy it again.

Located in the Depachika (basement food floor) of Daimaru Kyoto, this shop offers a wide variety of side dishes and bento boxes. The bento boxes are priced around 2000 yen on average, making them a bit pricey. You can choose between mixed rice or chirimen rice for the bento boxes, which are packed with plenty of vegetables, making them a healthy option.

Due to the COVID-19 measures, I have been eating bento boxes more often than before, and as a result, I have started to indulge in slightly luxurious bento boxes. After trying various options, I have noticed that established restaurants offer a higher level of quality in terms of overall balance, variety of ingredients, beauty, and freshness. This time, I tried a bento box priced at 2160 yen. While more expensive options may have more luxurious ingredients, I found the taste of this bento box to be satisfying enough for the price. Thank you for the meal.

My wife bought this for her to eat, so I won't give it a score, but she said it was very delicious. We bought the "Rokkaku" set (1620 yen) where you can choose your rice, and the bamboo shoot rice was colorful and well-balanced. Just like it was described, it really gives a home-cooked restaurant feel. I snuck a piece of sweet potato from the side too!

In February 2021, on the way back from Kyoto, I decided to buy a bento at Kyoto Daimaru. This time, I chose a bento from Shimogamo Saryo called "Rokkaku", which is a classic option priced at 1620 yen (including tax). The contents of the bento are as follows:
- Takikomi rice (made with domestic rice)
- Shrimp
- Simmered taro
- Kinchaku mochi
- Hiryu head simmered
- Dashimaki tamago (Japanese rolled omelette)
- Mackerel with yuzu
- Yuba and dried shredded squid with sansho pepper
- Herring and kelp roll
- Sweet potato simmered in lemon flavor
- Scallop simmered
- Fried wheat gluten
- Smoked duck
- Simmered shiitake mushrooms
- Sweet chestnuts
- Simmered carrots
- Green beans
- Hanafu simmered
I enjoyed it at home right away. I was happy with the variety of side dishes, and I particularly enjoyed the smoked duck, herring and kelp roll, and mackerel with yuzu. The seasoning of the simmered dishes was very refined and delicious. Although the portion size was not very large, it was not a problem for me this time as I had purchased another bento as well. Thank you for the meal!

I had the "Ouchi Ryotei Beef Shigure" at Shimogamo Saryo in Kyoto Daimaru underground shopping street. The fried tofu served with the beef was delicious too. It was an elegant bento box.

Shimogamo Charyo was previously used for weddings at Shimogamo Shrine, but was taken over by the writer Kaoru Koyama in 2012. I had planned to order a bento from another place, but it was sold out so I ended up here. The price was 2,160 yen. The silk and sansho pepper rice lacked in quality and cooking method. Additionally, the portion was small. The assorted simmered dishes (lotus root, taro, meatballs, etc.) were carefully prepared but lacked in umami flavor. The shrimp, rolled omelette, duck roast, scallop, and oddly enough, a bamboo-wrapped daifuku (not a rice cake) were average as accompaniments for alcohol. The grilled mackerel with miso, meatballs, simmered Man'yoji, eggplant, sweet potato slices, two slices of fish cake, and garnished myoga lacked unity and did not showcase the unique characteristics of Kyoto, giving a poor impression. The pickles included thinly sliced pickled radish, seasoned young shoots, and miso-glazed bamboo shoots (which was the most delicious). The price felt about 1.5 times the value of the contents. The lack of dashi broth resulted in a strong flavor profile with minimal vegetables. The taste was on the salty side. The flavors seemed to be missing the traditional taste.

Today, I am in Kyoto. I had yuba at Sakuracha-ya in Daimaru, but it wasn't quite enough. So, I also bought a bento box from Shimogamo Saryo Kyoto for a snack with my drinks at the hotel.
