Kamei Shoten Katapan - A famous Kyoto confectionery shop established since the Edo period, offering nostalgic flavors. They have three types of Katapan: Circle (¥140), Triangle (¥140), and Katapan (¥150). The Circle is baked with charcoal, resembling a hotcake but with a unique texture similar to dorayaki. The Triangle is wrapped with a slightly raw texture, giving it a chewy and crispy outer layer, reminiscent of cream puffs. The Katapan is extremely hard, but melts in the mouth like a candy, with a subtle sweetness. When in Kyoto, be sure to visit Kamei Shoten for these treats. Located a 7-minute walk from JR Kyoto Station, this shop has no parking lot. The exterior looks like a candy store converted from a private residence. However, inside, there is a large iron plate, bundles of charcoal, and a large bowl of pancake mix ingredients... The walls are made of plywood. It's a different dimension from what you'd expect from the outside. The menu consists of three items: "Marupan" for 140 yen including tax, "Sankaku" for 140 yen including tax, and "Katapan" for 150 yen including tax. "Marupan" and "Sankaku" are made on a charcoal-fueled iron plate, cooked one by one after ordering. "Katapan" is pre-made and served from a large can. I purchased one of each. "Marupan" is a pancake, "Sankaku" is a pancake mix cooked raw with liquid mix left inside, and "Katapan" is a hard pancake that requires a hammer to break. Each requires a skilled technique to achieve the desired level of hardness when cooking. Popular among locals, many elderly ladies from the neighborhood bought a large quantity of "Katapan." The taste is decent overall, and the cost performance is good. This place has an exciting, carnival-like atmosphere. If you're interested, why not visit and experience it for yourself?

Maru-pan, sankaku, katapan, and some menu or variety are written, with question marks flying around. I had it baked. It's like a pancake on a hot plate, I see, so do you fold the round dough into a triangle for sankaku? It's solid and tastes delicious in a normal way.

When walking around Kyoto Station, I caught a pleasant scent in the air. I found a place called Katapan-ya. I wasn't sure what Katapan was, but it seemed to be something soft and easy to eat for people with weak teeth (lol). I tried the Marupan, which was soft and fluffy, like a hotcake. It was big, simple, and delicious.

"The bakery 'Katapan-ya' has cute chalkboard menus! They have round bread, triangular bread, and 'katapan' bread? I heard that 'katapan' is supposed to be hard, so I chose the softer option. The triangular bread was delicious with a nice aroma, similar to the dough of a custard cake. It was really tasty."
