I received a souvenir from Kyoto. There is a specialty store on the first floor of Kyoto Daimaru. Unlike Isetan, it's not crowded here. Speaking of the full moon, of course, it's the "Ajari Mochi". The chewy dough with not too assertive grains of sweet red bean paste. The balance is exquisite. I was able to enjoy it without it aging, so it was much fresher than what you can buy in Nagoya.

My husband said, "When it comes to Kyoto's specialty sweets, it's Ajari mochi!" so we bought some. I found out that you can also buy Ajari mochi in Osaka, Tokyo, Yokohama, and Nagoya. I decided to look into Ajari mochi. Ajari mochi is a traditional Kyoto sweet made by wrapping coarse red bean paste in a dough made of rice flour, wheat flour, and eggs, and then baking it. The name Ajari comes from the Sanskrit word meaning "high priest," which is used to denote the rank of monks in Tendai and Shingon Buddhism. The shape of Ajari mochi is said to resemble the hat worn by Ajari monks on a pilgrimage, and the name is said to come from the monks eating mochi to sustain themselves during their rigorous Buddhist training. It definitely has a texture like mochi on the outside, but it's also moist and has a delicious taste. It's a flavor and texture that older people would enjoy, so I would like to incorporate it into my future gifts or tea snacks.

Visited around 3 o'clock on March 15, 2022. It was a bit difficult to find as it is located at the back of the basement floor of Daimaru, where the traditional Japanese sweets are sold. I occasionally bought deli items here, but I rarely ventured this far into the store... Honestly, I was a bit lost. Today, I purchased Ajari mochi. Well, it's expected, right? I bought some for relatives, my mother, and myself. I baked the one for myself in the oven when I got home, and it was incredibly delicious. Ajari mochi is best when baked in the oven! It's a basic rule. It's actually written on the back of the package, but surprisingly, not many people seem to know.

After enjoying a delicious tantanmen at "KIBARU," I walked over to "Daimaru Kyoto Store"! I finished my friend's shopping first and decided to stop by "Mangetsu" before heading home! This time, I bought: - Ajari Mochi: 119 yen (tax included) "Mangetsu" is known for their Ajari Mochi! The chewy texture of the mochi is so delicious and it was quite a shock when I first tried it! When writing this review, I read the message on the back of the Ajari Mochi package for the first time! "Ajari Mochi is specially packaged, but since it is a fresh sweet, please consume it as soon as possible. As it is made of mochi, if it becomes hard depending on the storage location or season, heating it in an oven or deep-frying it in a thin batter will enhance the flavor. Mangetsu, the store owner, respectfully." I can imagine heating it in the oven, but I was surprised to see the suggestion of deep-frying it! I don't fry food at home often due to the mess and oil disposal, so I won't try deep-frying it, but does "thin batter" mean tempura? It's hard to imagine the result, but based on the message saying "enhance the flavor," it must be really delicious! Ajari Mochi used to be 100 yen each a few years ago, but considering how delicious and popular it is, the fact that the price has only increased by 10 yen is quite impressive! Ajari Mochi is a staple souvenir from Kyoto, and although I usually receive it as a gift, it was nice to go buy it myself after a long time! Thank you for the meal!

This time, I bought Ajari as a souvenir. I also got some for myself and enjoyed it. It can last long and you can eat it slowly. It's reassuring to give it as a gift. I also tried it myself. It's not too sweet, a refined Ajari. I could easily eat two of them!

One of the classic Kyoto sweets in my house is the Ajari mochi. It's not available in Hyogo Prefecture, so I can only buy it when I go to Kyoto or Osaka. This product was created by the second generation owner in 1922, and it has a moist mochi dough with eggs, filled with Tamba red bean paste. I bought a few 5-piece packs for home and souvenirs, and they were still a little warm. I enjoyed the Ajari mochi after a long time, with a warm cup of green tea. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal!

■ Visit Date: December 27, 2018 ■ Items Purchased: Ajari Mochi ■ MEMO I visited on December 27, 2018. As the year-end approaches, the underground shopping area of the department store is crowded with many people. I don't usually visit the food section of the department store, so I got caught up in the flow of people. This time, I came to purchase the popular full moon Ajari Mochi as a souvenir for my hometown visit. I was reading at the Doutor cafe in Shijo Kawaramachi until just before opening, and as soon as they opened, I visited the store. It's always a popular place with long lines, but since I got there early, I was able to buy without waiting. This time, I purchased a pack of 30. My whole family loves Ajari Mochi, so whenever we go back home for a long vacation, we always bring some back with us. ■ Blog https://ay-style.net/?p=35480

One of the representative souvenirs of Kyoto is this Mangetsu no Ajari Mochi! It is delicious, has a good shelf life, simple and universally liked, affordable (and they haven't raised the price from 100 yen), and easy to carry around due to its small size. I happened to have some business in Kyoto, so I went to Daimaru Kyoto to buy it. The basement of department stores always has a corner dedicated to local sweets, and in Kyoto Daimaru, almost all the sweets are from Kyoto! I felt a sense of Kyoto pride saying, "We don't need to rely on other regions." Now, I have eaten Ajari Mochi many times, and the combination of chewy skin and plenty of sweet red bean paste inside is exquisite and delicious! Enjoying it with green tea is very comforting. The shape, modeled after the hat worn by Ajari (a high priest), is cute and makes for a good conversation topic. Once again, I have enjoyed a little happiness. Thank you for the meal.

In May, during a food tour in Kyoto, after enjoying delicious strawberry shaved ice at Nijo Wakasaya, I decided to take a break from eating all morning and headed to Daimaru Kyoto to buy some souvenirs. I purchased the classic Kyoto souvenir, Ajari mochi, to bring back to my workplace. Ajari mochi is a semi-soft confectionery shaped like the netted hat of the high priest Ajari, who trained on Mt. Hiei. The fox-colored dough has a moist and chewy texture, filled with elegant sweet red bean paste. Personally, I love this sweet treat and it's a great choice for souvenirs because it's well-received by everyone. When in doubt about what to buy as a Kyoto souvenir, Ajari mochi is a safe bet.

In the past, the typical Kyoto souvenir was the famous "nama yatsuhashi". Last time, I bought items like Morika's Hiryu Head and Rakugan dried sweets, but this time I got Ajarimochi and pickles. While yatsuhashi can be found anywhere, the Ajarimochi from Mangetsu is not as common. Since my return Shinkansen was after 9 pm, I thought Ise Takashimaya in Kyoto Station would be closed, so I went to Daimaru in Shijo to buy them instead. The good thing about buying from here is that you can buy them individually without needing to buy a whole box, perfect for personal consumption. Just be aware that the expiration date is short, so make sure to check when you plan to give them as a souvenir. The chewiness is probably due to the mochi rice flour in it. The inside has sweet red bean paste, with a slightly restrained sweetness. It's always a well-received souvenir, so I highly recommend it.

Every time I go to Kyoto, I buy "Ajari Mochi" as a souvenir. Although there are several shops at Kyoto Station, they are always crowded, so this time I bought them at Karasuma Daimaru. Luckily, it wasn't busy and I was able to buy them quickly. I bought a few for souvenirs, but also got a box for my husband who loves Ajari Mochi. The Ajari Mochi (10 pieces: 1188 yen) I bought was in a box, but you can also buy them in a bag for a slightly cheaper price. The skin is thin but has a chewy texture which is nice. Inside, there is red bean paste which is not too sweet and delicious. I only had one, and the rest were eaten by my husband. The short shelf life makes it difficult to buy a lot, but it's a recommended souvenir from Kyoto.

My father went to the department store and bought some snacks for us. This time, he bought 5 pieces of Adzuki bean mochi for 540 yen. Adzuki bean mochi is a famous Kyoto souvenir, a traditional Japanese sweet with a chewy skin and sweet bean paste filling. My mother likes the bean paste but is tired of the skin, so we came up with a fun way to eat it - I eat the skin part, which is like the brim of a hat, and my mother eats the bean paste in the middle. It's a happy snack for both of us at 100 yen per piece! It's a great treat for yourself or as a small gift. The only downside is that it doesn't last very long.

Mangetsu Daimaru Kyoto store is located in Daimaru Kyoto store. I used to visit Daimaru Kyoto store often in the past. This time, Mangetsu's rice cake-like senbei looks like senbei. It is soft and filled with sweet bean paste inside. It has a moist texture similar to wet senbei in Tokyo. This kind of texture is rare in Kansai. You can enjoy it with a sense of traditional Japanese sweets in Kyoto. I introduced one souvenir from Kyoto. (^-^)ノ∠※。.:*:・'°☆

We were looking for a souvenir for ourselves (Ajari Mochi) towards the end of our trip, and decided to buy Ajari Mochi to take back home. We couldn't find it at regular souvenir shops, so we thought maybe we could find it at Kyoto Station or something. We ended up going to Daimaru department store, where we found a shop selling Ajari Mochi. However, they were out of stock and we had to wait for about 30 minutes for a new batch to arrive. Several people were already waiting in line when we got there. My friend decided to wait in line, so I sat outside on a bench and took a break. Soon after, my friend called me to say they were able to purchase it. It seems like it's quite popular. The packaging is simple, and the mochi inside is soft and chewy with red bean paste filling. It has a unique texture. I can understand why people would line up for this. It was a delicious treat.

Every time I visit Kyoto, I buy souvenirs for my husband's colleagues. The red bean paste (anko) has just the right amount of sweetness and goes really well with the chewy mochi dough. It also has a decent shelf life and the best part is that it's only 105 yen each, which is very affordable. The individual packaging makes it convenient for sharing at the workplace. I used to buy them at the Isetan department store next to Kyoto Station, but it was always crowded and I had to wait in line. However, this time I happened to come across a shop at the Daimaru Kyoto store without any lines. Daimaru is located near Nishiki Market, and the underground floor has many famous Kyoto shops, making it a fun place to explore at your own pace.

When I visit my parents' house, I always buy souvenirs to bring back. My family loves them, and so do my relatives, so it's a must when I go back home. Compared to the long lines at Isetan, you don't have to wait as long to buy them. If the expiration date was a bit longer, I could buy more, but the most important thing is being able to enjoy the same taste as always. I also buy them as souvenirs, but sometimes I feel like treating myself to that chewy texture, so I buy some for myself. The reasonable price is also nice, right?

Since childhood, my parents have always brought Ajari Mochi as a souvenir. Even now that I live in Tokyo, I buy Ajari Mochi as a treat for myself. However, it can be a bit pricey at 105 yen per piece, so buying 20 or 30 pieces is tough on a regular salaryman's wallet. I didn't know why it was called Ajari Mochi until I saw it being made on TV. It's shaped like the hat of Ajari, and it's a favorite treat of my father who grew up in Kyoto. Even though my father isn't a fan of sweet red bean paste, he loves this snack. Whenever my mother buys about 10 pieces for home, they disappear within two days (laughs).

The Ajari mochi is not only delicious but also reasonably priced at 105 yen per piece, making it a great choice for gifts. It is tasty as it is, but even better when warmed up. You can usually find it at Kyoto Daimaru, as they tend to have a large stock. Unlike other department stores in Osaka, where it may sell out quickly. Another perk of buying from Kyoto shops is that the expiration date is one day longer, likely due to the freshly made products they bring in.

I received a gift from a friend! I thought it might be the usual Adzuki bean mochi, but when I held the bag, it felt surprisingly heavy! Could it be...!! I exclaimed, "Ah! I wanted to try this!" and my friend replied, "You mentioned wanting to try it before, right?" I was touched that they remembered! Thank you! This time, I received: - Adzuki bean mochi - Honey-soaked Kyoto Nanban (Adzuki beans) Adzuki bean mochi has a chewy texture and is as delicious as ever! As for the honey-soaked Kyoto Nanban, I had been wanting to try it since seeing it in the shop's showcase. It's a heavy sweet bean jelly, and when I cut into it, I found large Kyoto Nanban adzuki beans inside! I like to cut my bean jelly into thin slices of 5-7mm thickness, and this one tasted great with a subtle sweetness and a generous amount of Kyoto Nanban adzuki beans throughout. I had been wanting to try the Kyoto Nanban, and it was a refreshing treat when chilled in the fridge before eating. It's perfect for the hot summer with its light and cool texture. Thank you for the delicious treat!
