Located on a street lined with Fushimi Inari soba shops is the main store of Seigoin Hachihashi. The store itself is small, but offers a surprising variety of Hachihashi and fresh Hachihashi. I was amazed by the cute and unique appearance of the Hachihashi I bought here. Each bag contains three pieces, and there are six bags in total for 430 yen. Each piece is decorated with a cute illustration. The taste is just like regular Hachihashi, but hey, cuteness counts, right?

I visited Fushimi Inari and walked along the approach looking for souvenirs. I couldn't find anything that was individually wrapped and had a long shelf life. Then I found this shop. I didn't want fresh Yatsuhashi because it doesn't last long and isn't individually wrapped, so I decided to buy baked Yatsuhashi for home use. I purchased Seigoin Yatsuhashi, 3 pieces individually wrapped, 8 packs for 420 yen. This is the real Yatsuhashi. It has a strong cinnamon scent and a crispy, firm texture. It was delicious. When you visit Kyoto, there are various types of Yatsuhashi to choose from, so it can be a bit overwhelming. This shop was established in the second year of the Genroku era. I did a little research. In the second year of Genroku (1689), they started selling dried sweets shaped like a koto, called "Yatsuhashi," at a tea shop in the forest of Seigoin on the Kurodani approach. This is said to be the beginning of "Yatsuhashi," and that location is where our company was founded (the current location of the main store). So, it seems like this is the original shop? There are a few shops claiming to be the origin, but this one seems to be the most well-known. The taste of a hint of peppermint is delicious. Shogoin, that's how it's pronounced. I didn't know that. I thought it was Seigoin. I feel embarrassed. I might have written it somewhere before (laughs). I love Yatsuhashi, and I had Shogoin Yatsuhashi for the first time in a while. The box is a light green color, almost like a willow color, and I thought, "Is this the right color?" It's a beautiful color. I remember thinking that I liked the Yatsuhashi from other stores better when I had it in the past, but the Shogoin Yatsuhashi this time was surprisingly ordinary with a mellow taste. The matcha flavor had a subtle taste of matcha afterwards.

I received this from my relatives in Kyoto. One of the "benefits" of having relatives in Kyoto is that it is a souvenir kingdom compared to Nara and Osaka. As a lover of Yatsuhashi, I would like to say which Yatsuhashi is the best, but I don't have any particular preferences and honestly can't tell the difference. If possible, I would like to do a "Yatsuhashi tasting" though... Both are delicious with a strong cinnamon flavor. However, I suddenly thought that this cinnamon flavor might make it difficult to distinguish the differences in Yatsuhashi. But in the end, that doesn't really matter.
