When climbing the Chawan-zaka towards Kiyomizu-dera, you will find a shop called "Toni Maru" on your right. This shop is actually a hotel owned by Toni Maru, but it has a store on the first floor. Inside, there were beautiful candies displayed. Intrigued by their rainbow-like beauty, I entered the shop. I tried a sample candy and tasted the grape flavor, which was incredibly delicious, as if I was eating real fruit juice. I ended up buying a box of "Candy Suki-iro" (756 yen) which contained red, yellow, green, blue, and purple candies. The flavors included pink (apple), red (strawberry), orange (orange), yellow (lemon), green (melon), blue (cider), and purple (grape). Truly, Kyoto's sweets are not only beautiful but also delicious. I plan to admire them for a while before indulging in them.

Is this a popular tourist route that tourists often take? I walked to Fushimi Inari Taisha in the morning, but the uphill stairs were tough. I ran out of the drink in my bottle quickly. I drove a little and headed to Kiyomizu-dera. I parked at a cheap parking lot a bit far away, so I had to climb another hill. Is this the "Chawan-zaka" street? I took a break and had matcha soft serve. It's called "Umicho Soft" for 300 yen. It seems like it's pronounced "Uji Soft." It's not from Uji, right? The soft serve is a light green color with dark green tea powder on top. It looks perfect, and the taste is really good! You can definitely taste the tea. It makes you feel like you're really in Kyoto. However, when you look closely, it's a unique shop. It seems like it's also a hotel. The exterior isn't that big. After finishing the delicious soft serve, I feel like my energy level has gone up a bit. If I have the chance, I'd like to have this soft serve again. Thank you for the meal.

On August 7, 2018, a new café and shop called "Kyoto Ame to Namaru Café & Shop" and "Namaru Candy Shop with Café Restaurant" opened on Chawan-zaka in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City, east of Gojo Bridge. The first floor features a candy shop selling Kyoto sweets, giant cotton candy, soft serve ice cream, and a restaurant area with one table at the back. The second floor is dedicated to the restaurant area. On the third floor, there is a hotel called "Hotel Namaru" which can accommodate one group per day, offering a stunning view of the vermilion-painted three-story pagoda of Kiyomizu-dera Temple outside the restaurant's windows.
The menu includes:
- Juicy Hamburger (190g) 1300 yen
- Juicy Hamburger (150g) 1100 yen
- Kyoto-style Fried Chicken 1050 yen
- Sweet and Sour Chicken 1050 yen
- Mackerel with Kasuzuke 1050 yen
- Beef Stew at Namaru 1680 yen
Rice, side dishes, and miso soup are included with each dish. You can choose from three types of sauces: original sauce, grated ponzu sauce, or demi-glace sauce. Rice can be ordered in large, medium, or small sizes, and for an additional 200 yen, you can add a drink such as coffee, green tea, chilled sweet drink, or hot/cold tea.
I ordered the Kyoto-style Fried Chicken with a large portion of rice. It came with simmered dried radish as a side dish. The fried chicken was crispy and juicy, and the miso soup was made with seaweed. The restaurant is a bit away from the main tourist street, but it offers delicious food at reasonable prices, making it a recommended spot for visitors.
