We went to Kyoto for the first visit of the New Year in the last days of Heisei era, 2019. We visited Kiyomizu Temple for the first visit of the year. Although it wasn't the second or third visit, my partner and I enjoyed visiting various shrines and temples together. Last night, we had a satisfying dinner that exceeded our expectations. We had planned to have a drink somewhere, but due to the effects of sake and my partner feeling too full from dinner, we returned to our accommodation. My partner was in a food coma, while I was pleasantly tipsy. Our accommodation was at Hotel Marufuku, which opened around the summer of 2018. The front desk was attended by a foreign staff member, and although their Japanese was not fluent, their courteous service was evident. For breakfast, we could choose between Western or Japanese style. My partner chose Western, while I opted for Japanese. The Western breakfast included toast, scrambled eggs, ham, fruits, and orange juice. My partner had no specific comments but enjoyed the meal. The Japanese breakfast consisted of grilled mackerel, datemaki (sweet rolled omelette), black beans, pickled vegetables, rice, miso soup, and fruits. The grilled mackerel was seasoned perfectly and went well with the rice. I have always liked datemaki since I was a child, and I have recently developed a liking for black beans. The pickled vegetables had a good balance of vinegar, although I felt the portion was a bit too much. After checking out, we went sightseeing. Today, we will return to Kagawa, the udon prefecture, after visiting the third of the three bridges we wanted to see on this trip. It's always nice to create more memories during travels.
