With GW as the occasion, I decided to visit the Shijo-Karasuma area in Kyoto. The place is well-known to everyone! Nishiki Market! It is a very famous market nationwide, no, worldwide. There were so many foreign visitors, more than half of the people I saw were foreigners. The shops in the market have a traditional and Japanese-style exterior, which creates a strange sensation. Now, my destination for today is this shop. The target is "sea bream shirako." I saw an article on the internet about a favorite dish of a certain foreign athlete, and I couldn't resist the temptation to try it myself. I arrived at the shop front at 5:45 PM. The closing time was 6 PM, so it was a close call, but there were so many people. It was overflowing, indeed. However, when I looked at the products lined up in front of the shop, I confirmed the existence of "sea bream shirako." At that point, I felt relieved and thought "Great!" But... there was a signboard in front of the shop with instructions like "① When lining up, start from the right side of the shop to the left side" and "② Any staff member can take your order." They had written it in English as well to make it understandable for foreign visitors. However, with such a crowd, it seemed like the rules were not well understood. I lined up from the right side, but my turn did not come easily... and before I knew it, the "sea bream shirako" was sold out right in front of my eyes... "Oh no, if only I had come a little earlier..." However, there's no use crying over spilled milk, so I switched gears and considered something else. It seemed like the most popular item at this shop was "fatty salmon carpaccio" (250 yen for one). Three large slices of salmon on a skewer. Hmm, this looks delicious. In addition, I decided to try the "anglerfish liver ponzu" (350 yen). I love anglerfish liver, so I chose this as well. After a while, the staff member who took my order was a friendly lady on the left side of the shop facing the front. She was very polite and friendly despite being busy. I felt her depth of kindness. Thanks to her, my disappointment eased a bit. Thank you. Now, I received my order and moved to the eat-in space on the right side facing the front of the shop. It was very crowded, so I quickly started eating. First, I took a bite of the salmon on the skewer... Wow! This is delicious!! The first thing I noticed was the firm texture. It's powerful! It's called "carpaccio," so there is lemon juice on it, but the acidity was milder than I expected. However, the flavor of the salmon stands out even more. It was lively and full of flavor, also powerful! I eat salmon often, but it's rare to find something with such firmness and flavor. And for three pieces at 250 yen? That's cheap... Next is the anglerfish liver. There was also plenty of it. It had no unpleasant taste, and I could sense its freshness. It was packed with the rich umami unique to anglerfish liver, and it's addictive. With this much for 350 yen? That's cheap... I couldn't get my hands on the "sea bream shirako," but the satisfaction exceeded my expectations. The container may look simple, but the taste is top-notch. It's wonderful. Oh, I'm glad I came. I would definitely like to visit again and this time, get the "sea bream shirako"!
