If you walk a little east from Oyamazaki Station, the shops will start to thin out, but if you keep going, you'll find a small shop on the other side of the park. It's easy to miss if you don't know it's there. The shop has big letters saying "Passing Grade Tofu," which seems to be their specialty product. Since it's exam season, it must be selling well. I don't need any good luck charms, so I tried their deep-fried dashi tofu. The tofu itself was sweet and very delicious.

(Revisited in July 2015) I was intrigued by the "Goukaku Tofu" and decided to visit again. Oh, there it was, the last one available! And next to it was my favorite Agedashi Tofu, also the last one left. "Lucky me!" I thought, and used that as an excuse to indulge in the last piece.
- Goukaku Tofu: Slightly larger and heavier than store-bought tofu, with a firm and silky texture. I enjoyed it simply with dashi soy sauce, and also made a tofu salad with the other half.
- Agedashi Tofu: Made from finely textured tofu, it was light and fluffy. I warmed it up and enjoyed it with just dashi soy sauce.
Reference prices: Goukaku Tofu 292 yen per piece, Agedashi Tofu 70 yen per piece.
As I saw the sign for "Goukaku Tofu," it reminded me of my days as a student preparing for exams. It's funny how those words trigger a response in me. Even though it's not exam season, those words still catch my attention. It made me think of the time I visited Toyoke in Kyoto. The sign for Goukaku Tofu caught my eye, and I ended up at a workshop where they offered it. Unfortunately, I couldn't buy it that day as it's only available on specific dates. So this time, I settled for the Sesame Tofu, which was small enough to serve as a side dish. It had a creamy texture but was not too rich, making it perfect for summer. I thought adding a hint of wasabi would complement it well. I hope to buy Goukaku Tofu on my next visit.
Reference price: Sesame Tofu 130 yen per piece. Located in Oyamazaki-cho, Kyoto, open from 9:00 to 19:00, closed on Sundays.
