After two years of living with restrictions, it's time to make up for lost time with revenge consumption. I used to enjoy octopus eggs at a yakitori restaurant in Arakei, Jonan-ku, Fukuoka City. It seems like a specialty at Nishiki Market in Kyoto. My dream was to eat "authentic" octopus eggs at Nishiki Market. After visiting the Kyoto Railway Museum and Arashiyama, I had time before dinner, so I came to Nishiki Market in search of the coveted octopus eggs. The market was bustling with people. While markets like Yatai Renkon Ichiba in Hakata and Tanga Ichiba in Kokura are known for their cheap and delicious products, Kyoto is in a league of its own. Dried sea urchin for 5,800 yen, and a third of a Kagoshima eel for 4,800 yen, among other refined prices. After pushing through the crowd, I finally found the octopus eggs. At the yakitori izakaya, the octopus eggs were cooked sweet and savory. The authentic Kyoto octopus eggs are dried and then further grilled with a burner, making them dry and crumbly. If you order a craft beer at Tango Table, the antenna shop for Tango City, you can eat what you bought at Nishiki Market. The coveted octopus eggs that I had dreamed of were not supposed to be this dry and crumbly.

I went to Nishiki Market for food tasting. It was even better than I imagined. This is the first stop. This shop normally sells furikake, otsumami, delicacies, and shijimi. The famous specialty of Nishiki Market, "takotamago". I had my eye on it from the start. The visual presentation is very cute, so it's clear why it's popular. It's sold in various places, but this is the original. Let's try it right away. Quail eggs are stuffed into the heads of small octopuses. Bite into it. Wow, it's delicious. The octopus and quail eggs are a miraculous match. Soft and tasty. This is really good. There are some delicious specialties among the famous items. It's a shame that you can't eat while walking, so you have to eat it on the spot. I really wanted to enjoy this with some alcohol. This is a must-try if you come to Nishiki Market. ...Looking back at the photos now, I realize I should have bought some furikake to take home...I was captivated by the takotamago.

Eating while walking around, you often think you can eat a lot but end up only having 2-3 items. I went to "KAI" for their "takotamago," which is cute and bite-sized. They also have quail egg surimi, beef skewers, and various seafood dishes that I want to try with friends. Even if our tastes are different, it's all good. You can eat most items with one hand. They close early around 6 pm, so lunch is recommended. It was fun (especially with some drinks). Thank you for the delicious meal! #KansaiGourmet #KyotoGourmet #ShijoGourmet #KarasumaGourmet #KyotoKawaramachiGourmet #KAI #KansaiFoodTour #KyotoFoodTour #NishikiMarketFoodTour #NishikiMarket #FoodTour #Foodie #NishikiMarketGourmet #takotamago #WantToConnectWithFoodies

The store shelves are filled with products like sesame yuzu, sesame plum, seaweed rice, and pickled radish rice... I bought octopus skewers (the price varies slightly depending on the size of the octopus). The octopus skewers have a strong impact. The octopus has a soy sauce-based flavor with a firm texture! Surprisingly, there are quail eggs inside the head. Next time, I plan to try the sesame bonito flavor.

A store selling furikake, otsumami, and shijimi at Nishiki Market caught my eye as I passed by. I stopped to take a look at "takotamago," where quail eggs are stuffed inside the head of an octopus. There are various types of furikake available, making it fun just to browse through them. I ended up purchasing grilled shijimi, which came with helpful instructions. It's delicious when cooked together with rice, but simply adding a few to miso soup enhances the flavor significantly. It was a convenient purchase. I didn't buy the "takotamago" because I'm not a big fan of quail eggs, but it seems to be the shop's recommended item and a popular topic on social media. For those who enjoy it, it's definitely worth a try. I would love to visit this store again when I'm back at Nishiki Market.

I visited in April 2020. The place is located in Nishiki Market. The takoyaki has quail eggs inside. It costs 250 yen for a medium, 300 yen for a large, and 350 yen for a special large. I chose the medium size for 250 yen. It was very delicious. They take it out of the refrigerator for you, so it's safe in terms of hygiene. I highly recommend it when you visit Nishiki Market.

I successfully composed a haiku. I took a leisurely stroll through Nishiki Market in Kyoto. Recently, unique gourmet foods like shrimp tempura skewers have been gaining popularity. Among them, I decided to try a dish that caught my attention: octopus with quail eggs. The shop that sells this dish, KAI, also offers clams, furikake, snacks, and delicacies. The octopuses displayed at the storefront look adorable, eagerly awaiting to be eaten. The staff can assist foreign tourists as they are bilingual. The dish is available in various sizes, starting from 300 yen. I chose the second smallest size for 350 yen. The octopus with quail eggs was seasoned with a sweet soy sauce, and the combination of octopus and eggs was surprisingly delicious. Once finished, you can dispose of the skewer in the shop's trash bin. It's best to stay at the shop until you've finished eating. Thank you for the meal.

Walking around Nishiki Market, there are so many tempting foods from seafood to sweets that you just want to try a little bit of everything. The prices are geared towards tourists, so just embrace it and enjoy being a traveler. I couldn't resist stopping in front of "Kai" and being drawn in by the visual appeal of their "takotamago." I ended up buying one and it was delicious, although I felt a bit sorry for the cute octopus. I could probably eat several of these. However, you can find "takotamago" at other shops too!笑笑

I went to Nishiki Market... Even though it was pouring rain, the arcade street in this area made shopping easy and enjoyable! There were so many people, it felt like Golden Week. As I walked through the crowded street, I noticed a shop filled with octopus dishes. The staff explained that they had quail eggs inside the octopus heads. I decided to buy a 15-piece pack as a souvenir, even though it was a bit expensive at 1800 yen for 10 pieces. The frozen octopus snacks ended up thawing throughout the day, so I ate them as soon as I got home. My family loved them, especially the kids! They were supposed to include ice packs, but they were missing. Nevertheless, I'm glad I was able to enjoy them. The snacks were really delicious, and I promised myself to buy them again next time I visit.笑笑

Strolling through the Nishiki Market shopping street, I came across a crowded shop selling various delicacies and furikake, all looking delicious. Among them, I noticed "Iidako" labeled as "Takotamago." The octopus looked normal, but what about the egg? I wondered as I read the product description, which mentioned quail eggs placed inside the octopus head. Intrigued, I ordered two Takotamago Dai for my eldest son and myself. After paying and receiving the items, we eagerly tried them in front of a nearby closed shop shutter. The octopus, simmered in a soy sauce-based sauce, was delicious, and the quail egg inside added a unique flavor. It was really tasty and seemed perfect for those who enjoy drinking alcohol. As someone who doesn't drink but loves octopus, I found it to be a hit. The continuous stream of customers buying it also made sense. It was a delightful culinary experience at Nishiki Market. When I came to Nishiki Market the other day, I saw a lot of people eating this, so I was curious. The price varies depending on the size. Since I want to try more things later, I chose the smallest one. It's called "tako-tamago" because there is a quail egg inside the head of the octopus! It was surprisingly soft and easy to bite into. The legs were a bit chewy, but I managed to bite them all at once. It seems like it would be hard to eat at other places, but it's just the right size for eating on the go. The flavor is quite strong, and it makes you want to have a beer with it. 😉

I came to see the autumn leaves in Kyoto and found this shop near the hotel while walking around Nishiki Market. They serve a unique dish where quail eggs are inside the head of a octopus. Nishiki Market is so crowded with people that it's difficult to walk around and try different foods.

This is a shop located in Nishiki Market in Kyoto. Nishiki Market is a popular tourist spot known as the kitchen of Kyoto. It is a covered shopping street where you can enjoy sightseeing regardless of the weather. While locals come here to buy ingredients, most visitors are tourists. As a result, the shops in Nishiki Market have shifted towards offering gourmet foods for tourists to enjoy while walking around. This particular shop used to sell furikake (rice seasoning) and salted fish roe, but it now focuses on selling gourmet foods for tourists. Their specialty is the "takotamago" which consists of a small octopus head stuffed with quail egg. There are three sizes available: medium for 250 yen, large for 300 yen, and extra-large for 350 yen. I tried the large size. The market can get quite crowded with visitors, so it's best to find a spot at the edge of the street to enjoy your food safely. The small octopus is quite photogenic. The taste is average, with the octopus head simmered lightly and filled with quail egg. It's like eating octopus and egg from oden at the same time. While the taste may not be exceptional, there is a fun element to the takotamago that adds to the tourist experience. It's a popular item in the market, and you can find other shops selling takotamago as well. It's a symbol of the gourmet street food experience in Nishiki Market.

A specialty store selling unique delicacies and furikake at Nishiki Market. Tamatamago is a quail egg cooked inside a squid's head, seasoned with a sweet flavor. Its small size makes it perfect for eating on the go, and its cute appearance is quite popular! They also sell furikake and snacks, making it a great place to buy souvenirs!

This shop is famous for its sesame oil bonito flakes. It goes well with rice, of course, but also tastes delicious on cold tofu. I buy it every time I come to Kyoto. Sesame wasabi is also tasty when drizzled over sashimi. Give it a try.

I tried the "takotama" for ¥250. It's an interesting dish with quail eggs inside the sweet and savory boiled octopus head. I can say that I went to Nishiki Market just to try this. It was not only delicious but also a surprising encounter.
