After visiting the Gion Festival, I stopped by this restaurant. Since I didn't have time for a movie afterwards, I decided to go with the set menu that was listed first. It was a set with soba noodles and a mini tempura bowl. You can choose between hot or cold soba noodles. I usually don't drink the soup due to the salt content, but I ended up almost finishing it because it was so delicious. Being able to enjoy such a tasty meal at this price makes me grateful to live in Kyoto.

I had tororo zaru soba and kakiage rice. I thought it would have been better without the tororo, just as zaru. The soba itself was delicious enough. Most of all, the kakiage rice was so tasty!! The soba came with tempura, but isn't this kakiage rice? From now on, when I eat soba, I will order kakiage rice!

I visited during lunch on June 23, 2022, and luckily there was no wait outside. I was seated at a small table for one person. I ordered the "Yuki Soba" which came with free extra noodles using a coupon I had from a previous visit to another store. It took about 10 minutes for the food to arrive. The "Yuki Soba" comes with tempura, which is essential as it balances out the meal. The texture of the soba noodles was excellent, as expected from a soba restaurant. I enjoyed the meal and finished it all. Yukiya is definitely known for their delicious "Yuki Soba" dishes.

When I wanted to eat soba in Kyoto, a local recommended the Natto Soba at Arakiya. Intrigued by the mention of natto, I searched online and found out that this soba shop is quite famous in Kyoto, with a branch even in Hotel Okura. I had to try it out. I went to the shop in Teramachi at 11:30, and it seemed like I was the first customer. I couldn't find the Natto Soba on the menu, so I asked the staff and they confirmed it was the "Yuki Soba." It seems to be the signature dish of the shop. I ordered it without hesitation. When the soba arrived, the surface was yellow and foamy, with tempura shrimp, seaweed, and edamame on top. I mixed it all together, and the taste was indeed reminiscent of natto. Mixed with the egg yolk, it felt like eating natto with rice. It was unconventional but delicious. After finishing the soba and broth, I noticed that the container had a shallow bottom, resembling a matcha bowl. The foamy texture also reminded me of matcha. Once again, I experienced another specialty of Kyoto.

I remember visiting this soba restaurant as my first stop when I visited Kyoto privately as a grown adult, not on a forced school trip. It was about twenty years ago, and I believe I found this place in a tourist guide like "Rurubu" or "Mapuru." Yukiya is a soba restaurant with six locations in Kyoto, founded in 1929 and incorporated in 1981. The third-generation owner operates the business, and they also offer soba noodle-making classes. This Teramachi branch is located in a prime spot on Teramachi Street, where many tourists stroll. There aren't many soba restaurants around this area in Kyoto, so whenever I pass by on a holiday, I see a lot of customers of all ages. I had cold soba with a rice dish, and the noodles were very thin and delicate, made of 80% buckwheat flour. If they are boiled for too long, they become too soft and lose their firmness. On this particular day, my soba seemed a bit too soft - perhaps the cooking time was a bit too long. The quality of the soba noodles can vary depending on the skill and experience of the chef at each branch. The small interior of the restaurant doesn't have a noodle-making room or an automatic stone mill in sight, so it's unclear if they make the soba on-site at this branch. There is one chef in the kitchen and one or two young staff members for serving, making it a cozy little place. The side dishes that came with the meal, such as pickles, were disappointing as they seemed to be pre-made products. In Kyoto, known for its pickles, I expected more unique and flavorful options to accompany the meal. It would be nice if restaurants put effort into not only the main dish but also the side dishes, giving equal attention to every element on the plate.

I visited the restaurant around 19:45 on Saturday. There was one customer before me. I ordered the Mini Tendon Set for 980 yen and the Handmade Soba Noodles (cold). The soba noodles seemed softer than those at the Senmaicho main store, or maybe it was just my imagination. And indeed, the dipping sauce was sweet! In my opinion, it was set to be quite sweet. The menu mentioned that salt was included, but there was none provided. I was intrigued by the phrase "Please eat" in the instructions on how to eat the Zaru Soba (see image 4). It seemed like it was written this way to avoid using double honorifics with "Please enjoy." If they wanted to use the word "eat," I thought maybe they could have written "Please eat" or "Please enjoy eating" instead. The Mini Tendon also had a sweet sauce. But since I'm used to sweet tempura sauce, I found it delicious. There were three types of pickles, all on the sweeter side, so the saltiness of the cucumber pickle was a welcome contrast.

I was drawn in by the delicious-looking soba set menu and decided to enter the restaurant. The cozy interior exuded a sense of history, with a pleasant aroma of dashi in the air. I ordered a mini tendon and soba set. The tempura in the tendon was crispy and delicious. The soba noodles were thin and smooth, my favorite type of soba. The dashi was a bit strong, but very tasty. I could eat it endlessly. The yuzu-flavored osuimono that came with the tendon had an elegant taste, satisfying my stomach as well.

Natto soba. A unique dish where natto, egg whites, and a meringue-like dashi mixture are mixed together and served with hot soba noodles. Extremely delicious. This place has its original recipe, so I always crave it. This time I had it with shrimp tempura. I'm sure other dishes are tasty too, but I always end up choosing this one.

The food was delicious. I had a question about the constant calling of the server and manager every time an order was placed.

At the end of the year, there were many staff members, making it hard to know where to look. The taste was delicious and the tempura was crispy.

A soba restaurant that you want to visit both during the day and at night. The famous Araki soba is so delicious that even after 10 years, I still long for it. It's nutritious, fluffy, with delicious broth, and I love it. The zaru soba is reasonably priced but very tasty, making it a rare authentic restaurant among the many expensive soba places. I will continue to visit this place. I also love the simple atmosphere of the restaurant. ✨

It was a famous soba restaurant, so I wanted to try it once. There are now many branches, but I believe this is the main store. I was surprised to find that the restaurant was smaller than I expected. I played it safe and ordered the Tempura Soba set. Honestly, there wasn't much soba fragrance, so I was quite disappointed. It wasn't that it wasn't delicious, but I was expecting something different from the others. I don't think I will go back again.

This is a small restaurant located in the shopping street of Yokiya. It is always crowded with four small tables for four people each. I ordered the tanuki soba, which is known as kitsune soba in Osaka. In Tokyo, I'm not sure what it would be called... In Kyoto, it refers to soba with a thick starchy sauce. When you order tanuki soba, it comes with chopped aburaage and Kujo negi. I think this is what makes it unique to Kyoto. It's nice to eat the warm dish during winter. The soba with thick starchy sauce is good, but for soba dishes, I feel like udon is better with thick sauces like this. The flavor here is not as sweet as other places around here. The atmosphere is nice because they were playing Nagauta music in the background. It wasn't from Dojoji, but some dance Nagauta, and it was quite pleasant. It made me feel like I was in Kyoto.

Today, I extended my legs to Kyoto. I was curious about the soba restaurants in Kyoto, so I visited this place. It is located a little south of Teramachi Kyogoku Shotengai along Shijo Street. When I arrived, it was unfortunately full. I waited for about ten minutes and was able to get a seat. I ordered the Matsutake and Autumn Pike Tempura Soba. After a short wait, it arrived. The soba was made with a 80:20 buckwheat to wheat ratio and topped with shredded seaweed. The dipping sauce was already poured into a small cup, and the condiments included white onions, wasabi, and grated daikon radish. The tempura consisted of matsutake mushrooms, pike fish, and Shishito peppers, with a slice of lemon on the side. It seemed that you were supposed to dip the tempura in salt instead of the dipping sauce. The tempura was quite delicious. The soba itself was okay. However, the soba dipping sauce was too sweet for my liking. If I come back again, I will try the hot soba.
