A okonomiyaki restaurant near Keihan Yamashina Station. [Fuwarayaki (tako)] 390 yen. In a nutshell, it's like a larger version of Akashiyaki. As the name suggests, it has a fluffy and soft texture, similar to takoyaki. The Fuwarayaki itself is flavorful enough to be delicious on its own. The broth is richer than that of Akashiyaki, but not too strong or salty. [Kokoyanen Mix Yakisoba] 1,080 yen. Yakisoba with pork, squid, octopus, and scallops. The noodles are very chewy. The ingredients are small but the sauce is not too spicy, making it tasty. [Extreme ★ Cheese Fondue Tamago] 1,480 yen. A limited-time menu item. The plentiful melted cheese on the hot plate smells amazing! The grilled cheese is crispy and delicious. Inside, there is camembert cheese, but it's not overwhelming. The cheese on top is excellent, and it's so good that you'll finish it in no time. The restaurant is spacious, and the staff is friendly. They bring out the dishes fully prepared quickly. You can order using a tablet, and there are many delicious options for side dishes. Free offerings include cold towels and pitchers of cold water. Although I didn't try it this time, the Kyoto-style Monjayaki also looked delicious. If this restaurant were near my home, I would want to go at least once a month.

The all-you-can-drink party course "Great Deal Course (7 dishes in total)" for 3000 yen per person was requested. It was a last-minute decision for a drinking party, and we couldn't make reservations at other restaurants, but we managed to slip in here somehow. There were two middle-aged men, so as long as there were drinks and snacks, it was fine, so this was more than enough (laughs). The course included edamame, mini potato salad, potato cheese, butter foil enoki mushrooms, pork balls, salt sauce yakisoba, and sherbet. Honestly, by the end, we were too full (from beer...) and hardly touched the salt yakisoba, etc... I'm sorry... As for the taste, it was neither good nor bad. The pork balls may be a matter of personal preference, but the cabbage was cut in large pieces, perhaps to emphasize the texture, but it lacked a fluffy texture. We drank a lot of alcohol! For 3000 yen, I would like to come back again! Thank you for the meal!

September 2016 revisit. Recommended powder shop chain here! It's a restaurant near Yamashina Station that I sometimes rely on for dinner. I haven't been here recently, it's been two months. I usually go on weekday nights, but this time I visited on a Saturday at 7pm. It was quite crowded, with good value for money, so it feels like there are a lot of students. It was almost full, but someone just finished eating so we waited a few minutes for cleanup and were able to get in. On weekday nights, about half of the seats are filled. Now, the order is my usual two dishes: - Okonomiyaki Butatama 620 yen (Oh, the price has gone up) - Yakisoba Ika 680 yen (I like pork but it's similar to okonomiyaki so I chose squid) Additionally: - Dashi Shoyu Cha-han 680 yen This is enough for two people! After ordering, the yakisoba came right away! I was able to take a picture of the steaming dish. The noodles here have a good texture. It's addicting. Next, the okonomiyaki. It's better than some old established restaurants, even though it's a chain store. The fluffy flour, crispy cabbage, and crunchy pork are just great. And, the new Dashi Shoyu Cha-han♪ I saw it being cooked while waiting and it looked delicious, so I ordered it. The rice and ingredients are stir-fried until fluffy and then topped with dashi shoyu♪ And a warm egg on top. It looked so delicious that I immediately dug in. It was so tasty that I forgot to take a picture. However, the dashi shoyu adds a light umami flavor that goes well with it! It's a good menu to add to the regular rotation. I think the menu here is pretty solid in terms of value for money. It was delicious! ---July 2016--- I often use this powder shop for dinner. It's a chain store, but I like the yakisoba here because it has a good noodle texture, so I keep coming back. I always order the large size yakisoba and it satisfies me (laughs). The cost performance is good, around 1000 yen for beer, powder food, and more. I go 2-3 times a month.

This time, I tried the modern okonomiyaki topped with myoga, carrots, daikon radish, and onions, along with yakisoba. The okonomiyaki itself tasted a bit sweet, maybe because of the sauce, but there was also a spicy sauce on the table which helped balance it out. However, it took a bit long for the dish to arrive, so it might be a bit challenging to pass the time if dining alone. They also offer monjayaki and yakisoba, so if I visit again, I would prefer to try the yakisoba instead of the okonomiyaki. Overall, it was an okay experience, not good or bad...

I felt like having Monja-yaki, so I decided to try this place, Koko Yane. I ordered the potato cheese teppanyaki, which is a must-try at this type of restaurant. I also tried the miso-marinated hormone yakisoba, which was delicious with the thick and chewy noodles. However, the miso flavor was a bit weak. I was allowed to cook my own Monja, but I wasn't sure how to do it, so I asked the staff for help. I tried the Kyoto-style salt Monja with mochi, cheese, and mentaiko, and it was quite tasty. The salt flavor was a bit confusing, but the combination of mochi, cheese, and mentaiko was spot on. I also tried the salt yakisoba, which was flavorful but a bit too strong. Overall, the experience was good, but there were some missed opportunities for improvement. The Monja was delicious though!

I underestimated New Year's Day. I ended up dozing off in the afternoon and by the time I woke up, it was already dark. I went out for dinner, but everywhere was closed. Even the famous Gyoza restaurant was closed! I thought about taking a taxi to Kiyamachi or Gion, but it seemed risky to go all the way there without knowing if there were any open restaurants for a solo dinner. Then I saw some lights shining and decided to check it out. It turned out to be a restaurant open on New Year's Day! I sat at the counter, and even though it was a bit messy, the menu had a variety of dishes like okonomiyaki, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, monjayaki (a Tokyo specialty), and takoyaki. I had some grilled dishes which were okay, sausages which were average, and pork with a good texture. The spicy sauce was a nice touch and went well with beer. In the end, I spent about 3500 yen, which was reasonable. The restaurant is a good option for okonomiyaki lovers, but I recommend sitting at a table during the winter to avoid the cold air coming in at the counter. I'll definitely come back next New Year's Day!

Located on the old Sanjo Street, a little south of Yamashina Station in Kyoto, is the "Koko Yanen Keihan Yamashina Station" okonomiyaki restaurant. I went there with my colleagues after work. We tried the Salt Sauce Yakisoba for 714 yen, Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki with beef tendon for 1029 yen, and 5 pieces of takoyaki for 260 yen. The Salt Sauce Yakisoba had thick noodles and lacked vegetables, tasting too salty. The takoyaki was too soft and not enjoyable. The Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki was the only decent dish, but it still seemed a bit off. The service was poor, with no words exchanged when bringing drinks or clearing dishes, making the experience unpleasant. Lastly, the restaurant was very smoky, so it's best to wear clothes that you don't mind smelling like smoke.

On my day off, I went back to my hometown and stopped by "Kokoyanen" in Sanjusangendo, Kyoto to eat with a high school classmate. It had been a while since I last visited. It seems like there aren't many okonomiyaki restaurants in Kyoto. We ordered Salt Cheese Bacon Monja (830 yen), Hormone Yaki (680 yen), Fluffy Yaki (680 yen), and Regular Sauce Monja (680 yen) for a total of just over 3000 yen for two people. There were quite a few families there and it was bustling. I'd like to go back if I have the chance.

I love okonomiyaki, so today I decided to eat it near Kyoto's Yamashina Station. I waited for about 10 minutes and had a bad feeling. I love eating, so I go to various restaurants. Okonomiyaki and yakisoba come out one after another. I start eating... and my bad feeling was right. It's not to my liking... Oops... I failed... (> . <) The sauce... the sauce... the sauce... the sauce... the sauce... Anyway, the sauce is too much. I managed to eat almost half. It's better to reduce the sauce.

The university is near this shop so I often use it. They offer all-you-can-drink and party courses, and the cost performance is quite good, which is helpful for students. The taste varies, but I think it's delicious. In particular, the salt yakisoba is the best. I'm not a big fan of the sweet sauce style, but I think it's just a matter of preference. My friends don't really like the takoyaki, but I do, so I think it really depends on personal taste. Despite that, I'll give a higher rating out of affection. I will continue to rely on this place in the future, so thank you in advance.

After work, I often stop by this shop. The entrance is narrow and only the counter near the entrance can be seen from the outside, but there are tatami and table seats in the back. When I feel like drinking beer to quench my thirst, this place is perfect for a quick order of a beer set (819 yen), which includes a small dish (choose from edamame, kimchi, etc.) and a fried dish (choose from chicken cartilage, potato skins, habanero chicken, etc.), allowing you to try four different items if you go with two people. They are also welcoming for repeat customers. The grilled dishes are brought to you when they are ready, and the okonomiyaki has a fluffy texture and tastes quite delicious. Bonito flakes, seaweed, and mayonnaise are provided so you can adjust the flavor to your liking. The yakisoba has thick noodles and you can choose between sauce or salt flavor, with toppings like pork and squid available. They offer a variety of teppanyaki dishes and desserts, so while I'm busy drinking beer, everyone can order their favorite dishes. Lately, everyone has been enjoying the takoyaki, which has a soft and fluffy texture. There are discounts on their website and many set menus available, making it cost-effective for larger groups. The beer served is Asahi. *Note: I may not remember all the details accurately as I usually eat after getting a bit tipsy, so I apologize if there are any mistakes.

If you want to eat okonomiyaki in Yamashina, you should go to "Okonomiyaki wa Koko Yanen" (This is the place for okonomiyaki). This restaurant not only serves various types of okonomiyaki, but also teppanyaki, so we used to go there for drinks. I remember that the first beer was 100 yen during early hours on weekdays. The recommended menu here is the "takoyaki". It is what you would call a "soft and fluffy" type, so it may not be suitable for those who prefer crispy takoyaki. Personally, I think the takoyaki here is the most delicious in Kyoto. It costs 500 yen for 10 pieces, so it's not cheap, but please give it a try. There are three types of sauces available: "sauce", "soy sauce", and "dashi", but I personally like soy sauce the best.
