This is my third visit to the Saigoku Thirty-Three Pilgrimage, and I have come to Kyoto after a long time. First, I visited Imakumano Kannon-ji. Next is lunch. I entered a hidden gem of a restaurant in the alleyways of Gion, Kyoto. It is located opposite the Kanki Inari Shrine, known for fire prevention and business prosperity. Oh, where is the entrance... It is also hidden. In front of the store, there is a chalkboard menu. [est pizzeria e trattoria GION] Est Pizzeria Trattoria Gion opened in October 2020. I was seated right in front of the wine cellar (^^♪ Inside the entrance, there is a wood-fired oven, which is a nice touch. "The single plank counter allows you to enjoy the live cooking experience right in front of you." (From the website) The wine cellar, reaching a height of 3m to the ceiling, is impressive! From the entrance, I could see expensive wines lined up. In the cabinet next to it, there were beautiful wine glasses lined up. The lunch menu includes salad and a drink with three types of pizzas at different prices. A ¥3000, B ¥2600, C ¥2200. Drink choices are Blood Orange or Espresso Coffee. First, I was served a salad made from vegetables from the Ohara morning market at Tatsuru Farm. The vegetables were fresh, and the dressing was delicious! The wood-fired oven is a fantastic construction made with real marble cut and pasted. When I saw the flames in the oven... my excitement grew. The pizza must be delicious. The owner and chef, Ryo Higashihara, is a popular pizza craftsman who has worked in Naples, Tokyo, and Kyoto. He quickly cooked the pizza in the oven. The first pizza was Mozzarella-based Bulcinella. The owner often ate this pizza on the Ischian Island in the Gulf of Naples! Mozzarella, homemade ricotta, salsiccia, cherry tomatoes, pepper, basil. The baking of the dough was outstanding, and the generous toppings made it satisfying to eat. The spicy oil in a copper container added a nice kick. A new plate was brought out! I have been to many restaurants, but this was the second one where warm plates were served, which was wonderful. The second pizza was Poporo. Salami, olives, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, garlic, pepper, basil, Grana Padano. The crust was fluffy and chewy, typical of Neapolitan style. The salami was delicious - I wonder if it's homemade? I chose Espresso Coffee as my drink. On the wall, there is a display of the owner's career achievements! In 2019, he won the Japan representative selection competition in the U35 category and participated in the world competition in Naples! I was completely satisfied with the lunch! There are private rooms in the back, and the atmosphere inside the restaurant is fantastic! Next time, I would like to try the chef's dishes with recommended wines.
