You can buy Yaki Kuri (roasted chestnuts) from Hisa-ya at Ena Service Area on the Chuo Expressway. When I stop by Ena SA, I often buy them to take home. The chestnuts are easy to peel and delicious. They are sold at one of the outdoor stalls. They offer a trial size of 130g for 550 yen, a value pack of 300g for 1100 yen, a family pack of 650g for 2200 yen, and a souvenir pack of 1000g for 3300 yen. The shop is located in Kyoto at 2-255 Kiyomizu, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto 605-0862. Phone: 0120-689-890.

On a holiday afternoon, I entered a small shop that caught my attention because it was crowded with customers. It was a chestnut specialty store. Among the soft serve ice cream and roasted chestnuts, I purchased a chestnut daifuku that caught my eye from the colorful display. Some people were eating outside the shop, but I decided to take mine home. Since there was only one, I carefully observed the daifuku before eating it. The taste was fairly ordinary. It was a simple daifuku with chestnut and rum-flavored cream. The cream was soft and the daifuku skin was also tender. With the addition of rum, it was a daifuku more suited for adults.

This is the approach to Kiyomizu Temple. I stopped by for some chestnuts. I tried the roasted chestnut soft serve ice cream first. The chestnut flavor was subtle, but there were roasted chestnuts at the bottom that made it really stand out. So, I decided to buy some roasted chestnuts to take home. They were sold by the gram. The roasted chestnuts were large and still had their skins on! Each one had a delicious chestnut flavor that I really enjoyed. Thank you for the meal! I think there is a certain romance to chestnuts.

This is Kyoto. This is the main store of Kuraya, which is often seen at local product exhibitions. They are famous for their roasted chestnuts. I have tried their roasted chestnuts a few times. This time, I purchased their classic roasted chestnuts and daifuku. The chestnuts here are all large and easy to eat because they have cracks. The chestnuts have a fluffy texture and a refined sweetness. Also, because they are large, they have a satisfying bite. The daifuku also has a refreshing sweetness in the red bean paste, making it easy to eat. The chestnuts and daifuku were so addictive.

It has been many years since I first tried this roasted chestnut. Whenever I see it being sold at limited stores or below, I can't help but buy it. This time, I purchased a 300g pack of Kyoto roasted chestnuts for 1,080 yen. The price seems to have remained the same, just adjusting for consumption tax. Unlike Tianjin candied chestnuts, the actual chestnuts are fluffy and the pieces are large. The sweetness is just right and goes well with coffee, black tea, or Japanese tea. You can also adjust the amount you eat, making it perfect as a dessert after a meal. I wonder if I can resist with just two pieces today. 😉

This time, I visited the main store of HISAYA located on Shimizu-zaka. This is the original store that led to the HISAYA Lounge in Azabu. It used to be possible to enter by waiting in line, but it is rumored that it has become reservation-only due to the impact of the coronavirus. For more details, please contact the store directly.
--Today's meal--
- Mont Blanc & Drink Set
- Hojicha Ice Cream
- Iced Coffee
Total: 1680 yen
HISAYA has two main features:
1. You can choose the ice cream flavor inside.
2. The ice cream flavors available during live cooking change seasonally. This time, I remember there being "Sakura," "Hojicha," and "Matcha."
Live cooking is one of HISAYA's specialties, where you can see your Mont Blanc being made right in front of you. This is also the same at HISAYA Lounge in Azabu, where they make it in front of you if you sit at the counter! You can find more information in my Tabelog review as well. Thank you for the delicious Mont Blanc!

The subtle chestnut flavor was elegant, and there was a chestnut at the bottom of the cup. It was delicious. It was not too rich, but still rich, and the portion was just right.

Once again, it's an event at Atre Shin-Urayasu. This time, a specialty store that opened its first branch at Kiyomizu Chawan-zaka in Kyoto, selling Mont Blanc and chestnut daifuku, was selling bagged roasted chestnuts, 50g for ¥250. I bought it, and it contained 5 large chestnuts. They had a moist texture, a refined sweetness, and were delicious. The large size also provided a satisfying eating experience. They weren't sticky, making them easy to eat even with bare hands. However, at ¥250 for 5 pieces... that's not cheap at ¥50 per piece (I'm not sure about the market price for sweet chestnuts).

I visited the Gifu Takashimaya store where they had a limited-time pop-up shop. I bought a baked chestnut Mont Blanc and a baked chestnut dessert. The Mont Blanc had a unique texture with cowhide, and it was incredibly delicious. The baked chestnut dessert was also reasonably priced. I would love to try both of them again. It was convenient to be able to use PayPay for payment.

While shopping at Yokohama Sogo, I noticed a Hisaya store on the basement 2nd floor on my way back. Even though it's not chestnut season yet, I decided to buy some roasted chestnuts. This time, I bought "Kyoto Yaki Guri." Although there is also "Kuri Maron" with peeled chestnuts, I prefer the nostalgic feeling of peeling the chestnuts while eating, so this time I bought Kyoto Yaki Guri. I used to buy roasted chestnuts and eat them while peeling them on the veranda when I was a child. I want to remember that feeling. Although I don't have a veranda now, I'll sit by the window, spread out some newspaper, and peel and eat the roasted chestnuts. They have a strong chestnut flavor and are delicious. I like that I can taste the direct flavor of chestnuts. The flavor of Japanese chestnuts is really delicious. As I eat, my mouth gets a little dry, so I drink some milk to continue eating. I quickly finished eating what I bought. I was able to enjoy the nostalgic roasted chestnuts. Thank you for the meal.

On this day, I wanted to buy roasted chestnuts on my way back from the Kasama Toubi Festival, but one of the two stores had a special pressure cooker that looked similar to a popcorn machine and occasionally made a loud explosion sound, attracting everyone's attention. So, I decided to go to that store. I wanted to take a picture of the moment when the pressure was released, but it was taking a while, so I couldn't wait and wanted to buy roasted chestnuts made from Kasama chestnuts. However, upon closer inspection, the other store was actually using Kasama chestnuts. They were selling a trial size of 130g for 540 yen (tax included). The roasted chestnuts were large and about 7-8 pieces, sweet, fluffy, and moist. They were incredibly delicious, even though they were just roasted without any additional ingredients. I had seen this store at events before, but I didn't realize that Bisaya was a famous roasted chestnut shop. I was ignorant of that fact.

It's a Japanese chestnut sweets shop near Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto, but they had a limited-time pop-up store at Sendai Station, and my daughter brought back a Mont Blanc dessert. It has sponge cake topped with cassis sauce and whipped cream, and on top of that is a chestnut cream made with Tanba chestnuts. The harmony of the cassis acidity and the chestnut cream is delicious.
