I love the shokupan (Japanese white bread) from Shinshindo, Pan de Mi. It's different from supermarket bread, with a sweetness from the wheat that brings a feeling of happiness in the morning. It also retains its taste and texture well even when frozen! This time, I also bought croissants and banana walnut croquants for lunch. My only wish is that they were a bit cheaper...

In the basement of a building in Kawaramachi, Kyoto, there is a famous bakery. While at WiZ Green buying a salad, I decided to take a look and ended up getting the "Pork Cutlet and Plenty of Cabbage Multigrain Sandwich" for 420 yen (including 8% tax). Yes, it was a cabbage-filled cutlet sandwich (laughs).

When it comes to Kyoto, Shinsindo is a must-visit place, but it was my first time there. I stopped by for takeout on my way home after drinking. I purchased a set of three types of bread for only 500 yen, which was a super deal. One was a croissant with cheese and ham inside, but I forgot to take a photo, sorry. The remaining two were a croissant and a whole wheat bread with dried fruits and nuts. The croissant had a nice crispy texture and a rich buttery flavor, which I really enjoyed. The whole wheat bread also had a delicious taste that became more pronounced as I chewed on it. As expected from Shinsindo, everything was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

☀️ Since there were no seats available at 11 am, I opted for takeout. ⚫️ Sweet and Spicy Chicken Fillet Burger Sandwich for 380 yen ⚫️ Croissant with Chocolate and Almond for 320 yen ⚫️ Croque Monsieur with Kujyo Negi and Bacon for 250 yen *All prices include tax for takeout. For dine-in options, please refer to the photos. - Sweet and Spicy Chicken Fillet Burger Sandwich: A sandwich with white bread, sautéed Kujyo Negi, sweet and spicy chicken fillet, and tartar sauce. The sweetness and spiciness are more on the intense side, but not too spicy for those who can't handle much heat. - Croissant with Chocolate and Almond: A must-try favorite with almond cream in croissant dough. For croissant lovers, this is a must-try. The chocolate inside is milk chocolate, not white. - Croque Monsieur with Kujyo Negi and Bacon: This was an impulse addition since it came out fresh from the oven. It's like a Croque Monsieur with Kujyo Negi and tart on top... with bacon instead of ham. I like the crunchy texture of the negi. The gooey cheese is a nice contrast.

In the underground area of the Karasuma Oike Station, there is an eat-in place with a bakery attached. There are plenty of counter seats for solo diners. I ordered the "Zakkoku Seikatsu no Senose Plate Set" for 1,100 yen. If you choose hot coffee as your drink, you can have refills for 150 yen from the second cup onwards. The zakkoku toast is crispy, spread with butter, and has a delicious flavor. The set includes potato salad, egg salad, cream cheese with raisins, carrot salad, and other side dishes to enjoy with the toast. The ham is moist as well. The dressing for the lettuce is served separately, showing attention to detail. If you order one drink, you can also enjoy the bakery's bread at your seat. I stopped by after getting tired from watching the Gion Festival.

It is commendable to turn Kyoto's pickled vegetable "sukugi" into a spring roll. Frying it adds a rich flavor of oil, giving it a deep taste, almost like a vegan dish. Although it doesn't seem completely vegan... Setting aside the filling, the idea of wrapping and frying something light is quite innovative.

I visited this place twice. It is down-to-earth with surprises. Whether it's a set meal or individual items picked from the shelves, everything is delicious and "correctly" quality controlled. The clam chowder in the set was surprisingly tasty. The tart was moderately special, with plenty of ice cream and little whipped cream, creating a balanced texture. The quiche, with its egg-rich pastry and fluffy, delicious texture, has a unique charm unlike regular delicious quiches. I'll definitely visit again!

This is the bakery "Shinshindo" at the RAKU Fourjo Karasuma store. I visited around 3 pm on this day because I needed to kill time for about an hour and also wanted to grab a snack. The store is located on the B1 floor of RAKU Fourjo Karasuma. Inside the store, freshly baked bread and pastries are displayed. There is also an eat-in space where you can order food and drinks. On this day, I ordered a croquette burger sandwich for 370 yen and an orange juice for around 250 yen (I think). The eat-in space had plenty of seats, although it was almost full. The seats were spaced out nicely, allowing for a relaxed dining experience. The croquette burger sandwich was simple, with a croquette and cabbage sandwiched between buns. The croquette was surprisingly rich in flavor with a good amount of minced beef. The buns were soft and had a great texture. The sauce was just right, and the cabbage added a nice crunch and acidity, complementing the croquette well. It was a simple yet satisfying burger. The orange juice was also flavorful and enjoyable. I visited for the purpose of killing time on this day, but the atmosphere was calm, and there was a good variety of bread available. I would like to visit again, not only for dining in but also for purchasing bread.

I had a "Quiche and Chowder Plate" for a slightly late lunch or an early dinner at Rakue Shijo Karasuma Shinsaibashi. The quiche was filling and delicious, served with chowder, bread, and salad. It's a convenient place to enjoy a meal at odd hours and relax.

I purchased a ham and egg sandwich for 420 yen on a holiday in April 2023. The sandwich had a slightly spicy mustard spread inside. The egg tasted like a scrambled egg. The refreshing acidity of the tomato was nice. I also tried the cherry blossom butter for 200 yen, which is a spring limited item. It had a beautiful cherry blossom color and a faint cherry blossom scent and flavor. The combination of sweet red bean paste and butter was delicious.

★Located in the basement of RAKUÉ at Shijo Karasuma. Convenient and high chance of finding a seat (the Starbucks on the 2nd floor is usually full). ★Casual atmosphere but quiet. ★Tried the Hot Milk for 360 yen (tax included) today. Sugar is also available. Perfect for a light snack, with a comforting taste.

When walking around Kyoto, I came across a bakery called Shinshindo, which had a similar number of stores as Shitsuya. I decided to try it out since I had never purchased anything from there before. I tried the salt bread and bean bread. Perhaps because I had visited many bakeries in consecutive days, my impression was that the bread was quite ordinary. While it was tasty, I couldn't help but wonder how a bakery like this can survive in a city filled with so many delicious bakeries. Thank you for the meal. If asked whether I would buy bread from this place again in Kyoto, my answer would be no.

Established in the 2nd year of the Taisho era, this bakery has around 12 stores in Kyoto. This particular location is a cafe inside a commercial facility. They accept cash, card, and QR code payments. They charge for bags (paper/plastic, 5 yen). On a weekday afternoon at the end of the year, we stopped by for a break with two people. There were about 20 customers already there. Some were using laptops or even taking a nap, so it seems like a comfortable place, but the turnover rate is decent.
[Items we had for dine-in]
- Croquette Burger 326 yen (for me)
- Croissant Chocolat Amande 305 yen
- Onion Gratin Soup 580 yen
- Hot Coffee x2 350 yen each
They didn't offer to heat up the food, but the croquette burger was big and the sauce was delicious. It didn't soak into the bread, which was interesting. Even though it was cold, the curry-flavored cabbage and beef croquette were very tasty. The coffee was satisfying with a good amount for 500 yen. It's rare to find a bakery that serves onion gratin soup, but it was cooked in the oven and served hot! It was rich and had a deep color with tender onions and melted cheese, paired perfectly with the bread. They have a variety of other menu items like pasta, gratin, quiche, salad sets, cake sets, and more, all surrounding the bread. I couldn't resist and ended up taking home some collaboration of bread and pickles. I wish this place was closer! The palm-sized macarons looked delicious too. I would love to visit again. Thank you for the meal!

I went to Kenkun Shrine in Kyoto to get the last Nobunaga stamp of the year. On the way back, I bought breakfast for the next day at Shinshindo. [Summary] Hazelnut and Chocolate Brioche 330 yen Brioche with a diameter of about 60mm and a height of 70mm. It contains chocolate cream, chocolate chips, and hazelnuts. It is deliciously sweet with a moist cream and two kinds of crunchy textures. Canele de Bordeaux 250 yen Canele with a diameter of about 30mm and a height of 35mm. It is soft both on the outside and inside, with a moderate level of moistness. The egg flavor is subtle, and the herb flavor is slightly strong. Suguki Piroshki 300 yen I bought it again. Today, I warmed it up in the toaster. Well, it's delicious. Suguki is delicious, but Piroshki is also delicious.

Kyoto people are familiar with this bakery. Opening hours vary by location. The bread is often sold out by the evening. I went to buy my favorite cream puff but once again, it was sold out. So, I bought a pear tart instead. It had a subtle sweetness that paired well with tea.

I stayed in Kyoto on this day, so I decided to have breakfast. I chose this shop. It's one of the familiar bakeries in Kyoto, Shinshindo. It's located in the basement of Laque, so it's easy to access. They also had a breakfast menu, but I decided to try a variety of bread instead.
- Croissant au Beurre
- Kitayama Melon Bread
- Wagyu Menchi Katsu Burger
- Apple Juice
The croissant had a good volume and a crispy exterior, but the inside was not as fluffy as expected. The Kitayama Melon Bread was mildly sweet and enjoyable. The Wagyu Menchi Katsu Burger was delicious, especially if it had been reheated. Unfortunately, they didn't offer to reheat it when I paid. It was also quite filling. The juicy menchi katsu inside was a highlight. I finished it quickly because I was hungry. Now, it's time to take a break while enjoying the juice. Thank you for the meal!

I came to Shijo-Karasuma today with some spare time before my scheduled appointment, so I decided to stop by this restaurant to have the lunch I missed earlier. It's located inside Rakku and on the B1F, offering both takeout and eat-in options. I paid first and then waited at the counter near the entrance. I ordered a Croque Monsieur for 820 yen, which came with a drink, so I chose a hot coffee. After ordering, I received my coffee first and then waited for about 10 minutes for the Croque Monsieur to be served. The sandwich was crispy with gooey cheese, and the combination of ham, cheese, and bread was harmonious and delicious. It was a comforting meal.

I often visit the old bakery located on B1F of RAKU Fourjo Karasuma store directly connected to Hankyu Karasuma Station. I stop by on my way to work to buy small gifts for my colleagues, and this time I decided to try some new items. One of them is the "Kyoto Wheat Petit Bread with Sweet Bean Paste and Butter (173 yen)". It is a soft Kyoto wheat petit bread sandwiched with sweet bean paste from Nakamura Seianjo in Kyoto and salted butter. Another item is the "Mango Castella (238 yen)". This summer baked good has a rich mango flavor and is finished with mango and passion fruit icing for a refreshing taste. Lastly, there is the "Bakery Snack (150 yen)" that I have purchased multiple times. It is a steamed cake-like snack made with plenty of brown sugar, perfect for a 3 o'clock snack. I have also enjoyed this snack at home, and it has a nostalgic taste that is both heavy yet easy to eat. In addition to bread, Shinshindo offers macarons, tarts, cakes, and collaboration rusks with Gen Ryo Kakko, making it a perfect place for small gifts. It is convenient to stop by on my way to work.

One day, after a series of hard work, I felt like having something sweet, so I stopped by this long-established bakery in Kyoto on my way to work. I bought some sweets as a little thank you for my colleagues and also some snacks for when I get hungry. I purchased the scones with plenty of chocolate chunks. I shared them with my colleagues who had been working hard with me on a deadline the day before. The amount of chocolate in these scones is impressive, but the moderate sweetness and simple flavor really appealed to me. While I also enjoy the plain mini scones from Shinshindo, these chocolate scones are now a candidate for repeat purchase. It's convenient that they are open early in the morning when I go to work. Thank you for the meal.

The dessert after dinner on this day was "Tart & Danish" that I purchased from a Kyoto long-established bakery located on the B1F of Rakuhetsu Shijo-Karasuma store. I actually wanted to eat something like an apple pie, but I happened to see the "Dark Cherry Danish" and bought it. It is made with croissant dough using fermented butter, topped with dark cherry compote and homemade custard cream, and finished with pistachios. I also bought the "Chestnut Tart" which is generously filled with chestnuts, perfect for chestnut lovers. The next day, I enjoyed the two types of treats: "Cinnamon Donut" and "Chocolate-filled Scone", which I shared with my husband. Thank you for the delicious treats. For more details, please refer to my blog [Kokoromano "Ma"].
