On November 11th, a Kyoto-originated okonomiyaki restaurant, Okonomiyaki Kokoyanen Shijo-Kawaramachi store, opened on the 2nd floor of the Kohraku Building in Nara-ya-cho, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City. They offer Kyoto-style monjayaki, okonomiyaki, yakisoba, teppanyaki, and more. They also have a lunch menu called "Kokoyanen Lunch" which is a great deal. They offer dinner menus, courses, and takeout options as well. You can find the restaurant next to Kamishima Coffee Shop, and you can go up the stairs to reach it. The partitions are high, giving a semi-private feel and allowing you to relax. There is also a smoking room available. In addition to table seats, there are also sunken kotatsu seats. The monjayaki options include sauce flavor and Kyoto-style salt monjayaki. All prices are excluding tax. The staff will cook the monjayaki professionally even if you have never done it before. The table is equipped with sweet sauce, spicy sauce, mayonnaise, nori, bonito flakes, water, toothpicks, and two condiments on the lower level. You can also request an apron if needed. The Kyoto-style (salt) monjayaki includes a mix of scallops, squid, clams, and shrimp. You mix the seafood and vegetables, spread them in a donut shape, pour the monjayaki batter in the middle, and quickly mix it all together. The original sauce is made mainly from organic vegetables without any synthetic coloring, preservatives, or additives. Different batters are prepared for okonomiyaki, monjayaki, etc. After shaping the batter into large and small circles, it resembled Mickey Mouse. Even though it didn't really look like Mickey, I jokingly asked if it was supposed to be Mickey Mouse, and the staff confirmed it was. You can enjoy the dish without adding extra sauce as it is already seasoned. It was fun to create and eat okonomiyaki in your preferred shape. It has been a while since I had monjayaki, but I would love to eat it again. For more details and photos of this review, please visit the Eternal Rose blog. Thank you for reading.
