Today is my wife's birthday... When I asked her what she wanted to eat, she said she wanted some meat. She had been craving yakiniku, which she hadn't had in a while, so we decided to visit this place. Despite the challenging times for the yakiniku industry, I hope they can persevere and thrive. I had been to the main branch in Murasakino a while back, but this was my first time at the Shimogamo branch. It was a rainy weekend night, but despite the current situation, the restaurant was quite busy with groups of customers. This place is known for serving delicious meat, using Kyoto beef (from Tanba) and Kagoshima beef. As a meat lover, the sound of Kyoto beef alone makes me excited. We sat at a table with a sunken kotatsu-style seating where we could relax comfortably. The clientele seemed to be mostly older customers, perhaps due to the slightly higher prices. They served cabbage as a complimentary starter, which was a nice touch. Here's what we had that day: Draft beer 580 yen (my wife opted for water to be economical) Kimchi (daikon) 470 yen (a refreshing choice) Watercress and octopus spicy salad 680 yen (generous portion) Chicken skewers (salt) 840 yen Seafood assortment (salt) 1680 yen (2 shrimp, 2 scallops, plenty of squid) Regular assorted meats 1680 yen (3 slices of rib, 3 slices of belly, 3 slices of marbled beef) Harami (skirt steak) 1250 yen Small rice 270 yen, medium rice 300 yen The kimchi was standard but tasty. The salad had a spicy gochujang-based dressing with a hint of sweetness, and the portion was generous. The chicken skewers were tender and well-seasoned. The seafood assortment was surprisingly delicious, with sweet shrimp and scallops. The meats were of good quality, especially the marbled beef, which melted in the mouth. However, the sauce was too sweet for my liking, almost like a sugary soy sauce glaze. It had a char siu-like aroma that didn't quite match the meats. The harami was decent but overshadowed by the sauce. Lastly, we were served frozen pineapple, banana, and orange as a complimentary dessert, which was a nice touch. The service was polite and attentive, although they tended to clear plates a bit too quickly. Overall, the service was good, and the meat quality justified the slightly higher prices. Personally, I wasn't a fan of the sauce, but I appreciated the discount coupon they gave us on our way out. I would consider going back for the lunch discount.
