みろるグルメ
I visited on the opening day, April 15, 2023. The restaurant is a tonkatsu specialty store called Miyagawa Tonemon, famous for its premium pork tonkatsu in Osaka, produced by New Bayve, and is the fourth store in the New Bayve Group, located in Miyagawa-cho, Kyoto. The restaurant is tucked away in an alley, so it may be easy to get lost if you rely on Google Maps. The alley is not on the north side, but there is a passage in the middle of the building on the west side, and as you proceed further back, you will see the restaurant. If you use Google Maps to go, there is a passage in front of the Apollo Shokudo building, so specifying Apollo Shokudo may make it easier to find.
■ Atmosphere Inside the restaurant, which has a calm color scheme renovated from a townhouse, there are 5 counter seats and 4 two-person table seats. I was guided to the counter seat. Under the counter table, there is a shelf where you can put your bag, and I was told that I could place my bag there. On the table, there were fig sauce, carrot dressing, and shiso dressing.
■ Ordering method After being seated, you order while looking at the wooden menu book. You can choose from 3 types of premium pork, each with a description of the meat's characteristics, making it easy to understand. For lunch, it is served in a set style with rice, salad, and miso soup. Salad can be either cabbage or lettuce. Premium pork comes in three types: "Mangalitsa Pork," "Tokyo-X," and "Hayashi SPF Pork," with loin, rib loin, and fillet cuts, and you can also choose the gram amount. For lunch, rice, miso soup, and salad are included in the set. Salad can be either cabbage or lettuce, which is unusual compared to other restaurants. Rice, miso soup, and salad are free for the first serving, but there is a charge from the second serving. Prices range from 2000 yen to 3000 yen. You can also order additional fillet, Tokyo-X menchi-katsu, and one-bite katsu. Since everything is fried and served together, ordering additional items all at once may be a bit disappointing. It took about 30 minutes in total.
■ What I ordered I ordered the Mangalitsa Pork loin 160 grams, additional fillet, and also ordered the menchi-katsu and one-bite katsu. It was a bit of a large portion, but I was fine since I had a light breakfast.
◆ Impressions Chopsticks were already placed at each seat. About 20 minutes later, before the tonkatsu arrived, rice, miso soup, and yogurt were served first. The rice had a slightly watery texture. The miso soup was hearty and delicious. About 5 minutes later, the tonkatsu arrived. It was arranged on a palette-like unique plate with the cross-section of the tonkatsu facing up. Around the tonkatsu, there were seven types of condiments: whole pepper, yuzu pepper, akagarashi (red chili pepper), salt, soy sauce, olive oil, and lemon, as well as pickles. I was instructed to put the fig sauce in the empty space in the middle and to use two types of dressing for the cabbage.
● Mangalitsa Pork loin 160 grams Mangalitsa Pork is a rare breed of pig designated as a national treasure in Hungary, known as the "edible national treasure," with a high marbling rate and a low melting point, giving it a melting umami taste. This was my first time trying this premium pork, so I had high expectations. The tonkatsu is cooked at a low temperature, so it took some time but had a delicious pink color. When I tried to take a bite, it was quite chewy and I couldn't bite through, so I ended up eating it whole. The breading was thin and crispy. It had a strong wild taste, perhaps due to the meat. I ordered loin, but I was a bit concerned that almost one piece was mostly fat. I liked the condiments such as salt, yuzu pepper, and fig sauce. The fig sauce has a rich sweetness and umami with a fruity flavor. Finally, the yogurt that was served earlier had become lukewarm and difficult to eat with chopsticks, so I mentioned to the staff that it was difficult to eat with chopsticks.
