This is a Japanese-style French townhouse grill. It's a family-friendly restaurant where you can bring your dad, son, newlywed couple, and female friends. This time, we were brought here for the first time and had the chef's special course. The Muscat-wrapped prosciutto at the beginning was quite impressive. In particular, the pork cutlet was incredibly delicious. They also offer a la carte orders, so next time I want to try the escargot and the amazing pork cutlet that wasn't available this time. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

I visited Oonaka for the first time on the night of September 24, 2015. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice, and I felt relaxed like at home. The food was delicious and I was very satisfied. The escargot was piping hot and very satisfying. The cutlet looked great for Instagram and tasted incredibly delicious, making me feel happy. I also enjoyed the shrimp, as it is one of my favorite foods. Thank you for the meal. I will definitely go back. I will appreciate all the ingredients in this world. I'm calling for delicious food♪ The more I eat, the more power overflows♪

This year, I visited this restaurant twice during my business trips to Kansai. When my friend recommended it to me, I was expecting to try traditional Kyoto cuisine, but to my surprise, this restaurant turned out to be a French restaurant. Located in Gion Shijo, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Shijo Kawaramachi, the restaurant has a modest appearance that may not immediately scream "French cuisine". Inside, there are counter seats surrounding sunken kotatsu tables, giving the place a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The menu finally confirmed that this is indeed a French restaurant, with a wide selection of wines mainly from France but also including rare wines from Israel. The rustic pate and escargot were both flavorful with a perfect balance of herbs. The pate, in particular, had a delightful balance of black pepper and olive oil that made it irresistible. The restaurant's specialty foie gras was rich and decadent, truly showcasing the authentic flavors of French cuisine. The smoked duck left both my colleagues and me speechless with its light yet flavorful taste and perfect balance with olive oil. When I first visited in March with just one other female friend, I regretted not being able to try more dishes, but this time with four people, we were able to try everything. We finally reached the main dish of beef cutlet with red wine sauce, a dish that was truly exceptional and worth saving until the end. The tender beef cutlet with a perfectly fried crust and a hint of pink in the center was complemented beautifully by the rich red wine sauce. For dessert, we had a small portion of bamboo leaf-wrapped rice pilaf, which was incredibly delicious and the perfect way to end the meal. The staff at the restaurant were friendly and engaging, making our dining experience even more enjoyable. This hidden gem of a restaurant is one that you may want to keep to yourself, but at the same time, you'll want to show off to your friends.

Visited Grill Oonaka in Gion for the first time in December 2012. Located on a narrow street across from Gion Hotel on Shijo Street. Established in 1979. The restaurant was renovated from a tea house run by the owner's parents. The atmosphere is like visiting a countryside home, very warm and cozy. The dinner can be enjoyed in a truly welcoming environment. The counter seats are in a cozy horseshoe shape. The view is also very open. They offer three course options based on price. 5500 yen Course (tax included) - Salad-style appetizer - Seasonal soup - Today's fish dish - Today's meat dish - Bread - Bamboo-leaf wrapped pilaf - Dessert - Coffee or tea 7500 yen Course (tax included) - Salad-style appetizer - Today's appetizer - Seasonal soup - Today's fish dish - Today's meat dish - Roast meat - Bread - Bamboo-leaf wrapped pilaf - Dessert - Coffee or tea 9000 yen Course (tax included) - Salad-style appetizer - Two types of today's appetizer - Seasonal soup - Two types of today's fish dish - Today's meat dish - Roast meat - Bread - Bamboo-leaf wrapped pilaf - Dessert - Coffee or tea I ordered the 9000 yen course. It started with prosciutto and pear, followed by smoked salmon. The dishes were relatively simple but the flavors were gentle. I was very satisfied with the atmosphere, food, and service. Despite it being my first visit, they saw me off with a smile at the entrance. I truly felt glad to have come. With over 30 years of history, I wonder how many others have felt the same way as I did. I love well-mannered and cozy restaurants like this one. I sincerely hope more of these kinds of establishments will thrive. Another great restaurant that I hope will continue to prosper. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

I was looking forward to Kyoto. Where should I go to eat? This year, I decided to search from the old "Adult Off" again. When I searched online, I found that several of the restaurants featured in magazines had already closed. "Grill Dainaka," which looked delicious with beef cutlet and pate, was my first choice, so I called from Tokyo. I was able to secure a counter seat. On the day of the visit, it seemed to be a street just north of Shijo Street, which intersects with Yasaka Shrine. I walked while looking at the map. Maybe it would be faster to enter the road where Kappo Chihiro and Hanakasumi are located... This is a picturesque alley with Kappo's lanterns lining the narrow street. As I passed through the alley, I saw the signboard of Dainaka right in front of me. I entered the restaurant, which was renovated from a machiya townhouse. There was a counter in the first room, and the area around the counter was sunken kotatsu style. It was a calming space, like visiting a relative's house. The elderly couple sitting at the counter seemed to be ordering their favorite dishes a la carte. I thought the chef might be intimidating since the magazine mentioned, "If ordering a la carte, it's better to order everything at once," but there was no such atmosphere. The waitress was a lovely young woman who seemed to be still in training. In front of the counter was an elderly chef. In the back, there was a young staff member. It seemed like the young staff member was the owner? When I asked him to see me off on my way out, it turned out that the two were father and son. The father started the restaurant in this area 30 years ago. The father was watching over his son kindly, which was very nice. Now, I ordered the food. The course menu was quite appealing with a solid lineup, but since the beef cutlet I wanted was not included in the course, I ordered it a la carte. For appetizers, I ordered the country-style pate and roasted duck. The pate with foie gras and nuts was just right in terms of saltiness and firmness. The roasted duck breast was prepared in a Japanese-style steamed and boiled dish. The fatty part was so delicious that I couldn't help but mutter, "Ah, happiness." For the main course, I ordered the daily fish dish and the beef cutlet. The daily fish dish was mignon of tuna. I thought tuna might be a bit boring, but it was also delicious. The sauce made me want to dip bread in it. The beef cutlet had a crispy thin coating and the meat was soft. It exceeded my expectations. It's truly a wonderful restaurant. For dessert, I ordered the eel-wrapped pilaf. It was rice cooked with conger eel and saffron, rolled in bamboo leaves. The refreshing scent of bamboo leaves made me eat it up in no time. I wonder why this place isn't near my home. I really want to go back again before the end of the year. I have been taken to Kyoto by locals three times now. Kyoto has many delicious Western-style restaurants, and the ones I was taken to were all high-quality. This place has both counter and tatami seating, and we always sit in the tatami area. Everything here is delicious, but the beef cutlet here is especially good with its mature and rich sauce, and the meat is also excellent. The sautéed prawns with heads on are tender and the sauce is exquisite. This is a highly recommended restaurant that I would love to visit again and again. I couldn't take any photos because I was being treated.

According to a certain gourmet curator, it seems that there are actually many delicious Western-style restaurants in Kyoto. Our restaurant is one of those delicious Western-style restaurants in Gion. It is a small restaurant called Naito with competitive dishes and prices. It seems that if you order in advance when making a reservation, the waiting time will be shorter. The staff at the restaurant also mentioned that. There are quite a few seats, so it seems like it might take a while if it's crowded. The dishes are well seasoned and very delicious. The desserts are also plentiful and delicious. However, the counter seats allow smoking, which can be tough for non-smokers, especially if you're downwind. So, although the staff is very kind, I rated the service as 2.5. I'm sorry.

"I was told over the phone that I could choose between a set course, ordering a la carte, or deciding on the day of the visit, so I made a reservation for a seat only and visited the restaurant. That evening, I was the first one at the counter. I ordered drinks, a mixed appetizer plate, two main dishes (shrimp and beef), and a cheese platter. I started with the appetizers while sipping on my drink. It was a combination of smoked salmon, duck, and pate - all three were well-seasoned and delicious. I was looking forward to the mains. Despite it being a weekday, a few groups of customers who had reserved the set course started arriving, making me even more excited for the mains. However, nothing came out. I waited... and waited... and waited... while the set course customers were served dish after dish. Even the cheese platter didn't show up. I couldn't understand why, even though there were four people in the kitchen. Finally, the first main dish arrived - the shrimp was average, and the sauce was lukewarm, but the taste was not bad. Then, after another long wait, I finally got the beef cutlet that I had been waiting for. However, the beef seemed to be of good quality, but the strong pepper seasoning made it taste like a snack with "black pepper flavor"! The sauce that came with it was not tasty either, so I gave up after one bite. It was a huge disappointment considering my high expectations. As I was leaving, a young (apprentice?) staff member apologized for the delay in serving the dishes, but it seemed like there was no awareness of keeping the customers waiting. Instead of the chef who had been in the kitchen the whole time, it was the inexperienced staff member who came to apologize, which raised some doubts about the service. Looking back, when the restaurant's curtain was hung the other way around that day, I couldn't help but wonder if we were not welcome customers... The simple dishes were somewhat tasty, so the ingredients may have been good, but I was very disappointed in the chef's skills and the service. The restaurant may prioritize regular customers, but after making a reservation and going to the trouble of skipping lunch, I felt that I never wanted to go back with this level of taste and service."

Lately, there has been a significant increase in shops renovating traditional Kyoto townhouses, but this shop has been around for 30 years, making it one of the pioneers. It is located right in front of a narrow street lined with Japanese restaurants, just off Shijo Street. The atmosphere may seem intimidating at first, but don't hesitate to go in. The staff will greet you warmly and ask you to take off your shoes before entering. There is a counter and a tatami seating area inside, and I chose to sit at the counter. The menu only listed a 5000 yen course, but there are also 7000 yen and 8500 yen options available. I decided to go for the 7000 yen course. I started with a draft beer, which was Ebisu brand. The first dish was homemade smoked salmon with three different spices sprinkled on top. It was delicious and beautifully presented. The salad that came with it was also fresh and tasty. The second dish was French duck magret with a Japanese-style sauce, which I enjoyed. I then ordered a bottle of wine, and the chef recommended a good one for around 3000 yen. The wine was served in a nice glass, and I was impressed by the service. The soup was made from Kyoto turnip, and it was the best soup I've ever had. The fish dish was halibut with cream sauce, perfectly cooked and flavorful. The beef cheek stew and grilled Japanese beef fillet were also outstanding. The meal ended with a dessert trio of creme brulee, classic chocolate, and raspberry sorbet, all of which were delicious. I finished with a cup of coffee, which was also excellent. Overall, I was very satisfied with the experience and would love to try their other courses next time. The location is convenient, close to Keihan Gion Shijo Station, making it a perfect choice for tourists as well.

In the middle of the flower district, there is a townhouse with a Western-style restaurant. In fact, in Kyoto, there are many such charming restaurants. It could be classified as a bistro. As soon as you enter the entrance, there is a counter where you can interact with the chefs while eating. In the back, there is a tatami room where you can leisurely enjoy your meal while having a conversation. You can't go wrong with anything you order. There should be a set course, but it's best to ask for recommendations and build your meal around that. I can't drink wine, so I think it becomes cheaper without the wine cost (I do drink beer though). The location is right in the middle of a tourist area, so it could be a nice break from the bustling streets filled with tourists. Just take a turn off the crowded street, and you'll find a completely different side of the town... (Gion's flower district)
