There was a live tank of sweetfish and the grandfather was grilling them diligently. Since my mother recommended it, I decided to eat them. We were able to eat freshly grilled sweetfish as they were just sold out. They were nicely seasoned with salt and we could eat the head and organs as well. They were not at all fishy and tasted delicious. They catch the sweetfish from the river and let them swim in the tank to remove any fishy smell. We also had carp, but they were delicious too without any fishy smell. Thank you for the meal.

With a history of about 400 years, the Nishiki Market in Kyoto has been a market that has been famous for its underground water sources thanks to the Showa era water project. It is known for supporting Kyoto's food culture with many excellent shops located in the arcade street. Established in Meiji 45, this river fish specialty store is well-known in the market. This time of year, you can enjoy unique dishes like pregnant ayu (500 yen) which are quickly cooked on-site. The pregnant ayu, heated by the friendly lady at the shop, has a perfect saltiness and a delicious charcoal-grilled flavor. The shop also offers a variety of river fish dishes such as charcoal-grilled eel, carp, river shrimp, clams, loach, and crucian carp. The store has charcoal grills and a water tank, and you can enjoy standing and eating at the shop front or bring your food to the shared eating area in the market for a more leisurely meal. Despite the crowded market in late December 2022, the traditional shops in Kyoto continue to thrive, maintaining the unique charm of the market that has been supplied with underground water for many years. Established in Meiji 45, this restaurant offers charcoal-grilled eel (kabayaki or eel bento) and charcoal-grilled salted ayu, as well as standing and eating or takeout options, and a shared eating area at Nishiki Market (6 shops) for a casual dining experience.

I went to Nishiki Market today. I already have eel, so I looked at other things. I got some delicious simmered carp with roe and carp fins. The simmered carp with roe is quite big and a bit expensive, but it's worth it with plenty of guts and roe. The carp fins were not freshly cut here, but from a pack, which is fine. I ate it quickly with vinegar miso. The sparrows were crispy and crunchy, and although it's hard to tell at first glance, this is what happens when you cook them at that size. I ate them all from head to tail.

When I come to Nishiki Market, I always end up coming here. At this time of year, ayu is in season, but what interests me is the catfish. I happened to come across grilled catfish, both large and small. I bought both immediately! I have bought grilled catfish from here before, and they always seem to grill it very dark. The skin is very dark, so it feels a bit wasteful, but the meat is mild and very delicious. The larger one doesn't have as much fat, and the smaller one isn't tough, so I finished both.

I went to Nishiki Market today. It's always fun just to look around. But today, I couldn't resist and ended up buying carp, sweetfish, and pond loach. The carp sashimi had a nice texture, especially with a bit of vinegar miso. The recommended sweetfish was so plump that I almost thought it was full of eggs. The carp simmered in soy sauce was just as delicious as you'd expect from carp. The pond loach teriyaki was a bit overcooked, but they were selling it at a discount and it still had eggs inside. Even though winter is approaching and fish are becoming scarce, there's still plenty to enjoy.

This is a store in Nishiki Market. Like a traditional market, there are batto displays lined up with river fish, grilled eel, liver, simmered fish, and side dishes, allowing you to enjoy shopping in a market-like atmosphere. I was drawn to the "ebi tamago" displayed at the storefront and bought it. The simmered beans and small shrimp dish had just the right amount of sweetness and the shrimp flavor was an accent to the firm texture of the beans, creating a perfect and delicious combination that goes well with rice. I wish I could make it myself (laughs). Thank you for the meal!

I visited in April 2020. The place is located in Nishiki Market. Nishiki Market is also very quiet. Every year at Maruyama Park, I eat grilled ayu at the food stalls, but this year there were no stalls. So, I had grilled ayu for 500 yen and turtle soup for 300 yen here. They reheated the ayu for me. They also have quail and sparrow yakitori. They sell eel too. It's a well-known shop specializing in river fish. The grilled ayu and turtle soup were delicious. I highly recommend it.

At the entrance to Nishiki Market, there is a restaurant called "Notoyo" that specializes in river fish. Today, I couldn't decide what to order as there were live pond loaches, crucian carp, loaches, and gudgeon available. I ended up choosing the grilled catfish and the fried young crucian carp. The fried young crucian carp is especially delicious this time of year. The vinegar miso sauce is light, allowing you to savor the flavor of the carp. The grilled catfish was a bit overcooked, almost blackened. It was a shame to see the tail burnt. If I were heading straight home, I would have also liked to buy some simmered carp or carp.

I bought something I didn't buy last time! This time I took it to go. I already checked that there was a microwave on the first floor of the hotel. ・ Duck meatballs: They had a great texture and were very satisfying to eat! The sauce was flavorful, but the taste of the meat was also strong. I thought it would go well with beer, but I ended up drinking it with "Kyoto Mugi-aji Matcha" made by Ohkura, which I bought because it was a limited edition. I'm not a big fan of matcha, but this was delicious! It seemed to combine well with the bitterness of the beer, and the bitterness of the matcha was subdued. However, it might not go well with the meatballs (^_^;) Regular beer might be better. ・ Sparrow: It's been years since I last ate sparrow. I think it was in Yotsuya. When I ate it there, it still had its head, so it was quite impactful, but here it's just the body. It was still quite good though (^_^;) It was a bit difficult to eat because it had a lot of bones, but it was delicious without any strong flavor! I was satisfied.

Last time, when I passed through Nishiki Koji Street, I ate a hamburger set meal at Tenichi and got really full, so I couldn't eat anything else... So this time, I decided to leave my stomach slightly empty and try something new! First, I came to this place and saw a sign saying "Freshly grilled sweetfish! Very hot!" There were more foreigners than Japanese people walking along this street. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of river fish because they have a lot of small bones and a bitter taste. I don't eat fish that often either. Hmm, should I try the sweetfish? As I was contemplating, someone said, "The bones are soft and you can eat the whole thing from head to tail." It looked delicious, and I thought, why not try eating fish for a change. So, I bought it! Since it was freshly grilled, I decided to eat it on the spot. They said it's tastier with vinegar, although I'm not a big fan of vinegar, I decided to try it. (I have a lot of likes and dislikes (^_^;)) I took a bite from the head. I've always avoided eating fish with a lot of small bones because they tend to get stuck in my throat, but this sweetfish indeed had soft bones and I could eat the whole thing. Moreover, the sourness of the vinegar helped to mask the unique bitterness of sweetfish (°▽°) It's not completely free from bitterness, but it was at a level where I could eat it. It's probably the first time I've managed to eat a sweetfish of this size in its entirety. As for my original purpose, I had planned to eat two things here, but since I ate the sweetfish first, I decided to go with just one item this time. I chose the "Quail Teriyaki" because there were two options - one quail and one skewer, I went with the smaller skewer. I was told that the bones are quite hard. They heated it up for me on the spot. Indeed, it was tough! The meat was a bit firm too. I couldn't eat the bones, but the teriyaki flavor was delicious. Now I feel like having a beer. It would be great if they sold beer, even if it's just canned beer (o^^o). I'll save the other item for next time!!

I visited in December 2018. The place is located in Nishiki Market in Kyoto. It's a fish shop, but surprisingly, they were selling Snapping Turtle Soup for 300 yen. I ordered it right away and when I tried it, it was very delicious. Plus, 300 yen is quite reasonable. Nishiki Market has many wealthy Chinese tourists, and more and more expensive shops targeting foreigners are opening up, so it's nice to find a traditional and affordable shop like this. I highly recommend trying the Snapping Turtle Soup.

During my visit to Kyoto in November 2015, I wanted to try freshly grilled quail at Inafuku in Fushimi Inari, but unfortunately I didn't have enough time to go there. So, I decided to buy quail again at Nishiki Market, where I had bought teriyaki quail in March before. Quail is not something you see often in Tokyo, so I brought it back to Tokyo and reheated it to try. However, it was quite tough, maybe because it had been too long since it was grilled or because I didn't reheat it properly. It was hard to even remove the meat from the bones. Maybe quail, wine, and tofu shouldn't be taken on a journey. I still want to try buying domestic raw quail meat and grilling it myself, rather than imported frozen ones from France. During my visit in March 2015, I impulsively bought a teriyaki quail at a famous fish restaurant in Nishiki Market, Kyoto. Quail (not eggs) used to be a more common ingredient to eat, I remember seeing it on the menu at a yakitori restaurant in Mita called "Fukuya" and at the Tsukiji branch of Torito, where they sold raw quail with the feathers removed except for the wings. However, it has become rare to find quail nowadays. Eggs are still sold normally, so there should be parent birds around, but I wonder what happened. Recently, all I can find is frozen ones from France, which don't taste that great and are quite expensive. About ten years ago, I saw a whole teriyaki quail at Nishiki Market in Kyoto, so I always checked whenever I visited Kyoto, but I haven't seen it in the past few years. Finally, I found it at this shop. The shop had a variety of river fish dishes such as grilled rockfish, simmered carp, and grilled eel. Among them, there was a teriyaki quail, mini quail legs, and quail sausages. I asked the lady who was busy selling grilled rockfish for a teriyaki quail (470 yen) and tried it. The meat was flavorful and delicious. Compared to other poultry like pheasant or Shamo, which tend to have tougher meat even if they are flavorful, quail was quite tender. I preferred the teriyaki flavor over the French cuisine-style fruity sauce. The only downside was that there was not much meat. I would still like to try freshly grilled quail. I want to buy raw quail meat and cook it at home, but I wonder if it's sold somewhere. Since I have already searched thoroughly in Tokyo, I would like to try looking for it in Kyoto. Please note that this evaluation is only for quail and not the shop's main river fish products.

On the second day of the family summer vacation on August 13, we visited the 6th restaurant. After trying the super spicy rice crackers with habanero, we ventured into the world of bizarre foods at Notoyama, a shop named "Suzume" caught our attention. We were surprised to find out that they served sparrow dishes. We hesitated but decided to try it since we had come this far. We ordered sparrow grill (450 yen), smoked quail (70 yen), duck roast chicken (350 yen), and quail teriyaki (470 yen). The dishes looked quite grotesque, but we managed to taste them. The sparrow dish wasn't bad in taste, but the duck was tough and hard to chew. It was a bit of a challenge for us, but we somehow finished the meal. Overall, it was an interesting experience, although a bit difficult to stomach.

Today I visited Nishiki Market again. When I stopped by Notoy, the owner was there. I wanted to buy grilled eel, but she recommended the grilled gudgeon instead, saying that it has a better taste than eel even though it has a thinner flesh. She also insisted that I try the stewed pregnant crucian carp as it was the last one available. I found the gudgeon to be quite delicious when I microwaved it. It has a light, white flesh similar to eel but with a different taste. This was my first time trying gudgeon since staying at a minshuku near Lake Biwa. The stewed pregnant crucian carp, on the other hand, was a unique dish as it features a female carp with eggs inside. I had never seen stewed crucian carp before, as it is usually associated with stewed carp. The meat was firm and the dish was quite filling, as I could eat everything from head to tail.

When you come to this shop, you will be ecstatic. Although it specializes in eel, it also offers a wide variety of river fish, which is the best in Nishiki Market. The grilled eel and broiled eel cooked over charcoal are popular, but they also offer a wide range of other river fish dishes. On the west side of Nishiki Market, there is also a Notoyo Nishi shop, but the main store here has a wider selection of river fish. They also have live fish available, such as softshell turtle, loach, catfish, eel, and freshwater clams today. Grilled dishes include eel, catfish, loach, and goby. Simmered dishes include carp and crucian carp, while pickled dishes include goby, sweetfish, hongoromo, and shrimp. They also sell sparrow skewers and quail teriyaki, which were also available around Fushimi Inari. This time, I also stopped by the Notoyo Nishi shop and bought grilled eel skewers, a large catfish broiled eel, and sparrow skewers. The grilled eel comes with sauce, so you can lightly warm it in the microwave and then pour the sauce over it to revive the flavors. It is not overly burnt and is tender and juicy. I took the catfish eel home to eat. Since it doesn't have as much fat as eel, the meat is light and delicate. It also has roe, which is delicious. Sparrow skewers may not appeal to everyone at first glance, but they have more bones than quail, so they don't feel like typical grilled chicken skewers. You need to nibble around the bones to eat it. I wish they could clean the live fish for you to take home if you live nearby. Maybe I should bring a cooler box next time.

Established in the 45th year of the Meiji era, the first stop for food tasting at the long-established Nishiki Market is here at Kawauo no To Yusan. They offer delicious eel kabayaki, eel liver, Yawata maki, herring kombu rolls, soft-shelled turtle sukiyaki, carp dishes including koi kokum, washed carp, fried carp, and simmered carp. They also have Lake Biwa specialties such as hon moro kouma ni and gori sukiyaki. With a variety of river delicacies available, it's hard to decide what to eat. I later found out that you can also dine on the second floor. Personally, this is my top choice for lunch at Nishiki Market. Even though I haven't tried it, just thinking about enjoying it with sake sounds delicious. I spotted quail and duck among the river fish. And when they brought freshly grilled duck skewers, I couldn't resist. The duck skewer costs 200 yen per skewer and is delicious with its sweet and savory sauce. It's a must to stroll around with a drink in hand. Now, onto the next stop! Posted from an Android phone.

When I went to Nishiki Market, I heard that the eel bento here is delicious! So I bought it for my father who loves eel. I also got one for myself, which had 2 pieces for 1000 yen, a reasonable price. The size was just right and it was delicious.

There are many rare items sold in this fun shop. I was recommended to try the eel bento here and it was delicious. I also bought eel liver and simmered crucian carp. The simmered crucian carp had no fishy smell, and the eggs were very tasty. The flesh was quite firm. There were also interesting branched bones. The eel in the eel bento was fluffy, and I ate it with Sansho pepper. It was very delicious.

This is a takeout restaurant. There were various takeout menu options, but I purchased salt-grilled ayu for 500 yen and sparrow skewers for 500 yen. The sparrow had a crunchy texture with a few bones, and it was easy to eat with the sauce without any strong flavors. The ayu had a nice balance of salt, allowing you to fully enjoy the flavor of the fish. It was a unique restaurant where you can enjoy rare fish.
