MERAK is a wonderful mansion surrounded by antique furniture, renovated from a Kyoto machiya that must have been over 100 years old. Afternoon tea is available by reservation only, in private rooms with different atmospheres to choose from. The name "MERAK" in Serbian means "to feel joy and bliss from small everyday happiness and transient joy." The afternoon tea set includes a variety of tea-infused sweets and savory items, with high-quality Japanese tea to accompany. The savory items include three types of Yuba pizza, a specialty of the house. The scones are infused with green tea and served with a special tea cream. The tea served is a smooth and sweet Japanese red tea, perfect for pairing with the food. The owner comes from a lineage of the highest-grade tea producers, ensuring a delightful tea experience. Enjoy a luxurious afternoon tea in a charming atmosphere at MERAK.

Cute antique townhouse cafe. I had an afternoon tea which included: yuba pizza, salad, baked goods (matcha scone, leaf pie, matcha pound cake), jelly, mini melon parfait, roll cake, hojicha cookie, melon tart, white chocolate muffin, matcha cream, hojicha cream, yuzu jam, and Japanese black tea. Each item was small, so it was easy to finish. The quantity was less than half a meal. Considering the price, the quality and quantity of the sweets were reasonable. The cream, tart, roll cake, and leaf pie were delicious. The Japanese black tea was also brewed nicely.

Afternoon Tea Set Price: 3,800 yen - Hojicha cookies - Wagashi tea muffin - Melon tart - Melon mini parfait - Sakura bean paste roll cake - Matcha pound cake - Uesen tea jelly - Leaf pie - Uesen tea scones - Marmalade - Hojicha cream - Matcha cream - Yuba pizza with three flavors: pickled radish and bonito, Kujyo green onion and wasabi, chicken and perilla At the sister store of Wakoucha Chafu Kinkaku-an, MERAK, we enjoyed an afternoon tea that captures the essence of the fresh green season. The renovated 100-year-old Kyoto townhouse features a modern fusion of Japanese and Western elements, with a centerpiece frame displaying an array of sweets like a painting. The Wagashi tea muffin has a gentle sweetness from white chocolate, while the melon tart offers a fresh melon flavor. The melon mini parfait is adorned with intricate candy work, highlighting the noble aroma of melon. The Sakura bean paste roll cake is delicate and elegant, and the Uesen tea jelly allows you to savor the refreshing aroma of tea. The Uesen tea scones are crispy and fragrant, complemented by the light and delicate whipped cream with a slightly bitter hojicha and a matcha with the scent of fresh greenery. The marmalade is deliciously sweet and sour when added to the Wagashi tea. The Yuba pizza made with Yuba from Kyoto Miyama Town is crispy and flavorful, with Kyoto-style toppings like Kujyo green onion and bonito. The Wagashi tea has a strong sweetness, a smooth texture, and no bitterness, making it a perfect match for all the sweets. Owned by the Yamashita Shinjuen tea family, the tea used in drinks and sweets is of the highest quality, including the top-grade Yamashita Gyokuro hand-picked from Kyoto Tanabe and available for purchase as gifts. Each private room, personally designed by the owner, has its own unique charm, and with all seats being private and by reservation only, you can relax and enjoy your afternoon tea in elegance. It's also a delight to be able to choose your favorite room.

I found a shop called "MERAK" near the Great General Hachijin Shrine, which usually requires a reservation for their afternoon tea. I entered the shop and discovered limited edition sweets for sale. I purchased pound cakes in three flavors: "Ho Sencha (¥250)", "Japanese Black Tea (¥300)", and "Matcha (¥400)". Each cake was delicious, with the flavors well represented. I thoroughly enjoyed them.

Over 100 years old retro-modern Kyoto townhouse for afternoon tea * Kyoto Kitano Hakuba-cho. *☼*―――――*☼*―――――. MERAK @merak__cafe. *☼*―――――*☼*―――――. Renovated cafe in a Kyoto townhouse over 100 years old. All seats are private rooms for a relaxing time! Surrounded by antique furniture, it has a medieval European feel, but also incorporates Japanese taste, a fusion of Japanese and Western styles. "MERAK" doesn't have a direct translation in Japanese, but it means "feeling joy and bliss from the small happiness that happens in everyday life" in Serbian, which is lovely ☺️. What I had at this hidden cafe was an afternoon tea set for 3,800 yen, including 8 types of homemade tea sweets, 2 types of tea-flavored cream, 1 type of fruit jam, 3 types of yuba pizza (one slice each), Uji Tahara-produced first-grade tea, and Japanese black tea. Currently, the fruits include melon. Top tier: Hojicha and Japanese black tea muffin, melon tart, crumbly cookie. Middle tier: Cherry blossom bean paste roll cake, hand-stirred matcha pound cake, mini parfait with melon and Japanese black tea jelly, traditional Japanese candies, and candy art. Bottom tier: Two types of sencha jelly, leaf pie, sencha scones. The cream included hand-stirred matcha cream, which was aromatic and delightful, and hojicha cream, which was also delicious. The marmalade was rich with a hint of acidity. The Uji Tahara-produced Japanese black tea had a distinct sweetness and a refreshing aftertaste. The owner is also a tea farmer, so there is a lot of attention to detail in the tea. Yuba pizza with pickled radish and bonito, Kujo green onions and wasabi, chicken and salt koji, minced nori. This unique pizza is made by baking yuba on a wheat sheet, and it was crispy and delicious, with the pickled radish adding a savory touch. I had a luxurious time in a private space. Thank you very much ✽. Additional: Additional black tea is available for 1,000 yen. Even if the cafe is full, they sometimes sell baked goods such as pound cake at the storefront, so you can also get them for takeout ^ - ^. ⭐️ Available for 2 people or more, reservation required 2 days in advance, 90-minute time limit. Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. MERAK Kyoto, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City, 864-21. 12:00 - 17:00. #KyotoAfternoonTea #KitanoTenmanguCafe #KyotoCafe #KinkakujiCafe
