Opened in December 2021 in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, in Hanayu-koji, is Kyoto Gohan Amami no Keihan Komoto. Located just off Shijo Street, heading north on Shinkyogoku, and turning right onto Hanayu-koji (one block down), you'll find the restaurant. Before visiting the Shosei-en Garden (Kikakutei) within the precincts of the main temple of the Jodo Shinshu Otani-ha sect (Higashi Hongan-ji), I stopped by for lunch. I took photos with all the dishes ready upon request. The meal started with water and two small side dishes, followed by sashimi, chicken rice, and tea at the end. The side dishes included nanohana (rapeseed flowers) with dried baby sardines and sansho pepper, a Kyoto-style dish that was very spring-like and refreshing. The duck ham was accompanied by simmered hakusai (Chinese cabbage), red-heart daikon radish, and yuzu. The sashimi surprised me—it was the first time I had such a generous serving of sashimi for lunch in Kyoto. The fish, including yokowa buri (young yellowtail) and sawara (Spanish mackerel), was sourced independently from Taiza, Kyotango City, providing fresh seafood. The portions were much larger than usual, with the buri having a thickness of over 1.7 millimeters. Despite being young fish, the buri was fatty and melted in the mouth, while the sawara was also delicious with its large cut. The rice was served in a wooden tea bowl, with a generous amount of rice equivalent to 2-3 bowls in the bowl. Topped with kinshi tamago (shredded omelet), shiitake mushrooms simmered in sweet soy sauce, shredded breast meat of Tanba Kokusan chicken, green onions, yuzu, Amami specialty green papaya pickles, and nori. The owner recommended pouring Tanba Kokusan chicken broth generously over the rice, as only the pickles and shiitake mushrooms had flavor. The rich broth had a slightly nostalgic taste and was easy to eat. The portions of rice and sashimi were so large that I struggled to finish, leaving some rice uneaten. I also enjoyed the Kikaijima orange soda, which was incredibly delicious and made me want more. Despite being busy, the owner and staff even saw me off. There is a lunch-only point card available. The lunch was so incredibly delicious that I revisited the restaurant later. This is the most cost-effective and highly recommended restaurant I have visited in Kyoto.
