Next to Owariya is a souvenir shop❣️ The interior is refreshing and always decorated with beautiful flowers from Murorei. I always buy the Takarai soba dried noodles and dashi stock. Now that it's getting colder, I bought concentrated dashi for soba, and herring simmered dish❣️ The herring is necessary for soba, but can also be used for cooking eggplant or other dishes. I also got two soba manju for snacks, each costing 130 yen, they are small but I've loved soba manju since I was a child❣️ I cooked eggplant and herring simmered dish and had some leftovers, so I chilled it and boiled somen noodles. I mixed it with the chilled somen and dashi stock, it was delicious‼️ I added the yuzu zest and the homemade sansho pepper soy sauce I made in spring, and made tomato soba. I usually freeze the tomatoes, grate them and pour it over the noodles for a cold and delicious dish, but this time I used chopped tomatoes. I felt the flavor was a bit weak so I added virgin olive oil and it became so delicious(((o(*゚▽゚*)o)))♡ The olive oil added richness and depth to the dish. With dried noodles, dashi stock, and herring, it's really convenient❣️ On hot autumn days, cold soba is still a great choice ===========

I couldn't go out to eat soba, so I decided to have it at home *\(^o^)/* I usually have dried noodles, dashi, and dried fish in my pantry. When I visited the long-established soba shop Owariya in Kyoto, I bought some dried noodles to enjoy at home for lunch. Making soba or udon broth is quite difficult, so I bought some dashi stock and diluted it, adding some sake and mirin to taste. Since I made nishin soba, I made the flavor a bit stronger. I boiled the dried noodles for 4 minutes. The aroma may not be as good as fresh ones, but the chewy texture and smoothness are very nice. The dried fish was not too sweet or salty, with a natural flavor. I cooked one fish with eggplants and vegetables. I picked some wild Mitsuba growing in the backyard for garnish. Wild Mitsuba has a crunchy stem and leaves, so I picked the new shoots hidden in the shade. In just 10 minutes, my homemade nishin soba was ready. I sprinkled some homemade yuzu soy sauce on top. I also bought some Inari sushi from Suet Hiro in Kyoto the day before, so I had a delightful lunch with both dishes.

After enjoying a delicious soba lunch, we stopped by the neighboring confectionery shop! Both my daughter and I bought matcha warabi mochi as souvenirs for our friends. Since my daughter will be staying at our house for a few days due to work, I also bought a set to make her favorite herring soba. The set includes soba noodles, warm soba broth, and herring simmered in a simple sauce of sugar and soy sauce without any preservatives. It's a natural and delicious option with two herring included, just enough for two servings. The matcha warabi mochi was a hit as a gift for my friend's daughter, who is childhood friends with my daughter and recently opened a stained glass shop. The packaging is beautiful, and the ingredients are carefully selected, making it a perfect Kyoto souvenir. I believe those with a taste for quality will also appreciate it.

I visited the neighboring "Honke Owariya" to enjoy some soba and pick up some souvenirs. The building exudes a sense of pride and tradition that comes from working with soba for generations. Inside, the walls are made of earth mixed with soba husks. The large stone counter displays a variety of soba sweets offered by Honke Owariya. The lineup includes soba mochi, soba boro, and soba ita, among others. The popular soba boro has a light and crispy texture with an elegant and simple flavor, making it a representative souvenir of Kyoto. The soba mochi is a soba flour dough filled with sweet bean paste, offering a perfect balance of fragrant baked dough and mildly sweet paste. The soba ita is a thin sheet of dough stretched and crisped in a charcoal grill, releasing a delightful aroma of soba flour and sesame. I purchased a combination of two types as souvenirs, including soba karintou with cinnamon and salted sesame, perfect for enjoying with coffee.

Next to a long-established store founded in the 6th year of Kansei, there was a new souvenir shop for the Reiwa era! As soon as you enter, they offer cold tea, and you can take a commemorative photo while sitting on the veranda of the famous chestnut tree in the courtyard. Even though I live in Kyoto, the shop has a modern feel with its traditional tea house design, apparently designed by an architect from Osaka. The soba noodles I had at the neighboring soba restaurant were delicious, so I also bought some to take home. I love soba manju (soba-flavored steamed buns), and I was happy to find out that you could buy them individually. I ended up getting three freshly steamed soba manju in a cute box. I also bought some herring, which I cooked with eggplant. My daughter requested ponzu sauce, which we used for a delicious and refined meal. The matcha tea was a nice touch, and even though it's not commonly used nowadays, we find it useful for starting the fire in our winter wood stove. The packaging of the souvenirs from this shop is elegant and sophisticated, making them a great gift for someone in Kyoto.

When leaving the Tanegashima store, there was a charming building across the street that caught our attention. It seemed to be a shop, so we approached it and found out that it was a confectionery shop started by Owariya, famous for their soba, on the north side of their main store. My husband asked if I wanted to go in, and I eagerly said yes. He told me he would wait outside while I explored the shop. The interior was modern and spacious, with a great display of a limited variety of sweets. Beyond the large windows was a neat garden, leading to the main store where you can enjoy soba. I haven't tried Owariya's soba yet, but the pleasant atmosphere made me want to visit next time. For this visit, I got some soba manju and soba boro for takeout. The simple and gentle sweetness of these sweets paired well with hojicha or green tea. I'm sure they would taste delicious even when enjoyed with soba at the main store. Happy New Year to all my followers! Let's hope for brighter days in the coming year. Tomorrow is New Year's Eve, and I will now focus on preparing for the New Year.

Delicious. The skin is tasty, and the sweet red bean paste inside is also delicious. The mochi has a moist and soft texture with a crunchy sesame accent. The price is also great, just under 100 yen. It's a high level of cost performance. Thank you for the meal!
