Located just a 1-minute walk from Gion Shimbashi Tatsumi Shrine ⛩, is Umenoya, a shabu-shabu or sukiyaki restaurant. The staff will cook for you, so all you have to do is enjoy the meal. Gion may seem like a high-class area, but the friendly landlady and staff make the atmosphere comfortable. This time, I had the shabu-shabu. The beautiful meat and plenty of vegetables make it a healthy option. I really liked the taste of the ponzu and sesame dipping sauces. I forgot to take a photo, but before the main course, we were served firefly squid with vinegar miso and bamboo shoot simmered in broth. For the finale, you can choose between udon or zosui. I chose udon. Next time, I want to try the sukiyaki.

The taste of shabu-shabu is delicious, but since they cook it for you, I find it disappointing that I can't eat the vegetables at my preferred level of tenderness.

It is a typical Kyoto-style restaurant, where you can enjoy not only the food but also the atmosphere, including conversations with the owner. It may not be suitable for those who do not want to pay for the unseen aspects of the experience. The food is delicious, so there are no complaints in that regard. However, if you are only looking to eat the same dishes, there may be cheaper options available. Personally, I was satisfied with more than just the food. Overall, the value for money is average.

I was able to relax and most of all, the conversation with the staff was very pleasant. The shabu-shabu was all done for us, so we just had to focus on eating and drinking! I would love to visit this restaurant again. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Located just 20 meters away from the famous "Tatsumi Bridge" in the bustling tourist spot of Gion, this restaurant has a discreet storefront that adds to its charm. With a cozy counter seating for about 10 people and traditional tatami rooms in the back, it seems to cater more to locals than tourists. However, they welcomed me warmly as a visitor. Tired of the usual kaiseki meals, I opted for the shabu-shabu, and was pleasantly surprised when the friendly proprietress personally cooked the hot pot for me. I would love to visit again if I have the chance. Overall ratings: Food (4.0), Service (4.0), Atmosphere (3.5), Value for Money (3.5), Drinks (4.0).
