At Mimi Udon, Kyoto Gion branch, you can enjoy a beautiful view overlooking Gion. The service was excellent, and I ordered the Yuba Soba, which came with cute pieces of tofu skin on top. The dipping sauce was served in a small container resembling a sake cup, and you could customize it with sesame seeds, seaweed, green onions, and wasabi. It was a bit troublesome to keep transferring the sauce, so I ended up just pouring it directly into the soba bowl. The dish had a delicate Kyoto-style flavor, with the gentle taste of yuba and soy milk. It was delicious.

Kyoto at night. I had planned to enjoy various dishes at Nishiki Market, but somehow time got away from me and I missed the most lively time. My accommodation did not include dinner, so I thought about eating at the hotel, but they only offered reservations (><). I had no choice but to eat outside... So, I headed to a place where there seemed to be something. I walked straight ahead with no particular destination in mind, and eventually stopped at a place that looked promising. The restaurant was on the 3rd or 4th floor, so I took the elevator. It was late, so the restaurant was not very crowded. They mentioned that they couldn't make a certain dish (maybe it was hot pot?), but since we didn't plan to stay long, it wasn't a problem. We sat at a table with a view of the outside and ordered beer. We ordered the Seasonal Set Meal "Koto" which included small dishes, sashimi, tempura, seasonal soba (or udon), seasonal rice, pickles, and dessert for 2300 yen. The sashimi was delicious, but what I really wanted to try in Kyoto was yuba, and it was in the udon! I had seen signs for yuba everywhere while walking around, so I was in the mood for it. The yuba in the warm udon had a delicate texture and was absolutely delicious. The broth was also excellent. It was a very tasty meal. The location was easy to find and the restaurant was clean, so I recommend it when you're unsure where to eat. Thank you for the meal! ✨

When it comes to udon in Kansai, it has to be Maimaiya! I have eaten at the Osaka and Shinbashi locations before, but this time I tried it in Gion, Kyoto. By going at a less busy time, I was able to walk in smoothly without waiting in line. The udon here has a unique taste that is hard to find in Kanto. It's a shame that the Shinbashi location closed down. The udon in Kyoto is good too, but the udon at Maimaiya is delicious.

I ordered the Mimasu Gozen with udon noodles. It was delicious and I think it's a great place to go when you want to have a slightly luxurious meal. Next time, I want to try the udon suki.

As I was walking in Gion, looking for something a little luxurious to eat, I saw a sign for "Mimiu." Wait, there's a Mimiu here? I only knew the one in Kyoto Station Isetan, which always has long lines. What about this one? It's on the third floor of a building, and it has a kind of hidden, cozy vibe, so maybe you can just walk in without a reservation? I took the elevator up to the third floor and, as expected, I was able to walk in without waiting, even without a reservation. The interior wasn't like a traditional Japanese restaurant. It had more of an Italian or bar feel. You could see the streets of Gion through the window. Mimiu is known for their "udonsuki." It's a registered trademark. When I ordered it, the staff asked, "Would you like the shrimp in the pot?" Of course, my answer was "No." The "udonsuki" costs 3,500 yen per person. The staff brought the pot over. The ingredients were on a cart. They poured the broth into the pot. The broth was in a large container. Quite the attention to detail. Then, they artfully packed the ingredients into the pot. Everything fit perfectly, with no gaps. Maybe that's why the Chinese cabbage was rolled up. And when it started boiling, it was time to add the shrimp. I had declined putting the shrimp in at the beginning for a reason. When the box was opened, the fresh, lively shrimp jumped around. When I tried to pick one up with tongs, it slipped and leaped into the pot by itself. I had to use the tongs to grab it. If I didn't, the shrimp would jump around in the pot, causing the hot broth to splash. The feeling of the struggling shrimp was transmitted through the tongs. When that feeling was gone, I knew it had met its end. Humans are such cruel creatures. I ate while being aware of that. The ingredients were high quality, the preparation was intricate, and it exuded luxury, but 3,500 yen for udonsuki is a bit pricey... It's okay for an occasional treat.

After watching a play at Yoshimoto Gion Kagetsu, we saw this sign on our way to the station and decided to visit for my friend who had never tried conger eel before. The restaurant was not very crowded, and we were seated by the window overlooking the lively streets of Gion. We ordered the conger eel hot pot and yuba set meal. The aroma of the broth poured into the large pot was already inviting and comforting. We chose somen noodles for the hot pot, and the conger eel was tender and delicious, complemented by various condiments. The thin somen noodles were a nostalgic reminder of my childhood in Kansai. The "fox-like" ganmodoki with its sweet flavor was a delightful surprise. The broth, made with bonito flakes from Tosashimizu and kelp from Hokkaido, had a subtle sweetness that became more pronounced as we drank it. The finely sliced onions in the broth added a unique sweetness that we only noticed later. Overall, the broth was exceptional. However, the yuba set meal was a bit disappointing as we were expecting more emphasis on yuba. The octopus rice and the option for seconds were appreciated. I heard there is a Mimasuya branch in the local area, so I look forward to trying their beef shabu-shabu with this delicious broth next time!

【August 2017】After wiping off the sweat, I strolled around Gion Shira-kawa and Kamo River. I feel like having cold soba noodles for lunch~!(^^)! I headed to the familiar Mimi Udon in Gion as always. The taste never disappoints every time I visit here. The restaurant is spacious, beautiful, and has a calm atmosphere. Despite not being in a prime location inside a building, it is always bustling with customers. Luckily, I got a table by the window this time. Now, for this visit: - Ebi Oroshi Soba (cold) 1296 yen - Tororo Tempura Soba 1728 yen - Ebi Toji Zaru Udon 1782 yen - Kirin Ichiban Shibori beer 669 yen All the dishes had generous portions, and the men were very satisfied. The food was delicious as always. Eating cold soba while looking down at the tourists strolling along Shijo Street in the hot sunshine was very pleasant. I will definitely visit again! 【November 2016】After a leisurely walk in Fushimi, I decided to check out the autumn leaves in Kyoto. I visited Nanzen-ji and Chion-in slightly past their peak. It's okay though, I was just passing by the autumn leaves. I returned to Gion in high spirits. I was too lazy to look for a dinner spot, and it was cold, so there was only one option left. Yes! Udon Sukiyaki! I decided to go to Mimi Udon in Gion, which I hadn't visited in a while. As expected, it was crowded as always. There were many Western customers as well. After a 5-minute wait, we got a table by the window facing Shijo Street. We ordered the Udon Sukiyaki Course "Akane" for 5184 yen, which comes with seasonal appetizers, sashimi or tempura. The course is available for two people or more. We ordered the sashimi course and tempura course separately. It was very filling. The seasonal appetizers included sesame tofu, sea bream roe omelet, and blanched greens, all of which were delicious. The tempura had two prawns, eggplant, shiitake mushrooms, and green beans, all fried to perfection. The Udon Sukiyaki was luxurious and colorful, with various ingredients like Chinese cabbage, spinach rolls, prawns, chicken, conger eel, clams, carrots, shiitake mushrooms, daikon radish, green beans, mitsuba, maple leaf-shaped fu, and udon noodles. The udon noodles were firm and perfect for the hot pot. The flavor and color of Mimi Udon's broth were slightly rich for my taste as a Kyoto native. The ingredients were delicately prepared with a light seasoning, so it felt more like warming them in the broth than stewing. The aroma of grilled conger eel, simmered shiitake mushrooms, and the umami of clams and chicken were delightful. The sweetness of the conger eel and the softness of the prawns were exquisite. The maple leaf-shaped fu added a nice touch to the dish. The foreigners next to us were solemnly poking at their udon in a bowl, which was quite amusing. They seemed very intrigued by our Udon Sukiyaki! It was such a luxurious dish. Thank you for the delicious meal. I will definitely visit again! 【July 2015】I came to Kyoto to meet my sister and her husband after a long time. Looking forward to the evening meal, we first had lunch on Shijo Street. We wanted to take our time finding a restaurant, but my hungry husband was getting impatient, so we decided on this place! It's located on Shijo Street, near Yamato Oji Nishi.

This is a udon and sukiyaki restaurant located very close to Gion Shijo. I went in with a friend for lunch after seeing the sign. The interior is divided into two floors, with table seating and tatami seating. The atmosphere is quite calm and the staff are very polite. The menu consists mainly of set meals with noodles. I chose the sudachi udon and conger eel tempura set meal! The broth was light but had a nice sudachi fragrance, and the conger eel was fluffy and delicious. It can get crowded with tourists during lunchtime, so it might be better to go at a slightly different time!
