2. What is Akaren?
Akaren was founded in 1978 in Nishiazabu. Recently, I was surprised to see a sign at "Nandenkanden" Shinjuku store that said "The first tonkotsu ramen eaten by Tokyoites." A revival in Shinjuku! Will the most famous ramen shop in Japan, Nandenkanden, be revived?
2022-01-10 Nandenkanden was established in 1987. It is not at all the original. Kyushu Jangararaamen was established in 1984. It opened six years earlier, so it may be said that Akaren is the original Hakata ramen in Tokyo, right? (Was the original tonkotsu ramen "Keika Ramen" that entered Tokyo in 1968?) The first store manager of Akaren trained at the legendary Hakata "Akaren," founded in 1946. As a ramen lover myself, I have a decent opinion of Hakata ramen. When I was young, I visited the Akihabara store of Kyushu Jangararaamen quite often, but I wasn't so impressed. The only one that impressed me was Akaren. Both the soup and the noodles were perfect for me. Even now, I think that the noodles in Hakata ramen are too thin and lack flavor, but here, the thin noodles have a good texture because they are flat. I wasn't much of a playboy, so I didn't have much connection to Nishiazabu, but I visited Akaren quite often. As of September 15, 2023, Akaren Nishiazabu Main Store has a rating of 3.67 on Tabelog, 88,000 points on Ramen DB, and 4.1 on Google Maps. There is also a sister store called "Hakata Menbo Akaren Maru Building Store" in Marunouchi Building, which I have visited, but it was different from what I had in Nishiazabu. This time, I visited the Nishiazabu Main Store after a long time, and it was exactly what I remembered eating before. I was surprised at how delicious it was and at how it hadn't changed.
3. How to get to Hakata Menbo Akaren Nishiazabu Main Store, Exterior, Business Hours
〒106-0031
Tokyo, Minato-ku, Nishiazabu 3-21-24
From Roppongi Station, head towards Nishiazabu intersection along Roppongi Street. Akaren is located on the gentle slope down Roppongi Street. Exterior of Hakata Menbo Akaren Nishiazabu Main Store Signboard is brown, but the noren is red. "Established in 1946, the origin of Hakata ramen taste." It's amazing that it has a long history in both Tokyo and Hakata. [Business Hours of Hakata Menbo Akaren Nishiazabu Main Store] 11:00-5:00 Closed on Sundays Open until late at night.
4. Menu and Atmosphere of Hakata Menbo Akaren Nishiazabu Main Store
Ramen starts at 850 yen. The menu at Akaren Nishiazabu Main Store includes miso ramen as well. They don't have fried dumplings, but their water dumplings are a specialty. I ordered ramen and water dumplings (450 yen). The interior has young staff, but you can tell the head chef in the kitchen is a veteran craftsman. Maybe it's the same person I saw before, but I can't remember since it's been a long time. On the table, there are condiments like sesame, soy sauce, vinegar, pepper, and ichimi, as well as pickled ginger.
