Another state of emergency has been declared. In such cases, dining in at restaurants poses a high risk, so it's best to opt for takeout instead. I decided to stop by this bento shop on my way back from shopping. I had heard that Hokyu Sai, known for location bento and station bento, had opened a bento shop and had been wanting to try it. The main store is a bit hard to get to, so I chose to visit this branch near Kyoto Station. I used to order location bento frequently for my filming work, so I was excited to try their bento. As I did some research, I found out that they also offer bento from Asai Shokudo, famous for Western cuisine, and Hamamura, a longstanding Chinese restaurant, as well as okonomiyaki from Warai. I decided to go for their signature location bento and the hamburger bento from Asai Shokudo. When I arrived around 1:00 pm, most of the bento had already sold out, leaving only the location bento for 900 yen, sweet and sour pork bento for 670 yen, and eel bento for 980 yen. I ended up purchasing the location bento and sweet and sour pork bento. It seems that the sales vary greatly from day to day, as they were almost sold out by 11:00 am on that day. They also mentioned that you can reserve or order in advance, so it's better to do that next time. I brought the bento home and my wife and I each had our chosen main dish. The location bento included a small piece of eel, salt-grilled mackerel, simmered vegetables, rolled omelette, hijiki seaweed, fried chicken, thin pickled daikon, and rice. The simmered vegetables were a bit too heavily seasoned for my liking, and the mackerel had many small bones. The eel was just okay. The rolled omelette was average. The fried chicken had a Chinese-style taste with a hint of pepper. Overall, it was okay for a one-time meal. The sweet and sour pork bento included sweet and sour pork (pork and bell pepper), spring rolls, glass noodles, shumai, and pickled vegetables with rice. The sweet and sour pork had a good balance of sweetness and sourness, with chunky pieces of pork. My wife thought the spring rolls were unnecessary, but considering the price, it was still acceptable. I'm curious about the Western cuisine from Asai Shokudo, so I plan to make a reservation for that next time. Overall rating: 3.3.
