One day, I went to drink at this izakaya - even though I can't drink alcohol, I love izakaya menus. The place is called "Shinjidai Akihabara Honten," located a little further from Akihabara Station towards Asakusabashi under the overpass. It's a chain store with branches all over Japan, including Shinbashi, Shibuya, Shinjuku, and more. The Akihabara Honten is surprisingly open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It's a friend to drinkers at any time of the day! Their specialty is the fried skin skewers called "Densuki." I love fried food and chicken skin, so I'm looking forward to trying it. The menu includes Densuki for 50 yen per skewer, which is very reasonable, along with other affordable items. The drink menu offers draft beer for 190 yen and highball for 150 yen, which is quite reasonable. I started with a toast with a draft beer (Asahi Super Dry) for 190 yen and cola for 290 yen. The appetizer (simmered hijiki seaweed) costs 300 yen. When ordering drinks, I also ordered various food items. I tried the "Doruyaki" for 480 yen, which is a savory dish of fatty tuna and chicken grilled with rock salt. It has a great texture and flavor, and it's understandable why it's so popular. It goes well with alcohol too. The "Doten" for 380 yen is a dish with plenty of chewy offal in a sweet miso sauce. It's quite sweet, but it pairs well with alcohol. I accidentally ordered the "Densuki Large Pyramid (6 levels, 21 skewers)" for 1050 yen instead of the Medium Pyramid with 4 levels and 10 skewers. It was too much for two people, but we enjoyed it. The skewers are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, coated with a sweet sauce that includes Korean ginseng. I also tried the Densuki spice, which is made mainly from soybeans with zero salt content. It has a spicy and salty flavor that complements the skewers well. My husband had another highball (Black Nikka) for 150 yen and then ordered another draft beer. We also tried the "Troublesome Potato Salad" for 480 yen, where you mix the ingredients yourself to make the salad. It's a fun and interactive dish. Overall, we enjoyed the Densuki and other dishes, and I would love to go back for more Densuki and Doruyaki. Just be careful not to make the same mistake I did and accidentally order the Large Pyramid like I did! (You can add skewers one by one, so be mindful of your order) ===========
