On July 17, 2022, have you ever tried "Betayaki" when entering a store? I encountered another unique dish with an unusual name. This dish, called "Betayaki," consists of thinly cooked wheat flour dough layered with ingredients such as cabbage, noodles, and your choice of toppings. It is said to be the prototype of "okonomiyaki," similar to Hiroshima-yaki. However, it does not include "ika-ten" (a snack), and real squid is used in this dish. Similar dishes like Nikuten in Kobe, Don-Don Yaki in Tokyo, Ippen Western Food in Kyoto, Negiyaki, and Cabbage Yaki can be found, but Betayaki is characterized by thinly cooked wheat flour dough topped with ingredients (tendons, squid, oil residue, soba) and crisped on the surface to make the soba and oil residue crunchy. It is generously topped with salty mayonnaise, creating a delicious dish with a crispy texture. If you want to try Betayaki in Kyoto, it is said that you can't go wrong with "Mossan's Betayaki," a famous restaurant. The main store (Mibu) has been selected as one of the top 100 stores. The Omiya store, which opened about a year ago on July 4, 2021, is clean and tidy inside. I arrived before the 5:00 PM opening time and entered the store to take some photos easily. I ordered a shochu and green tea highball. The recommended dish was "Salt Betayaki," so I went with that. In the meantime, I chatted with the manager and staff. Even as a first-time visitor, the atmosphere was nice and made it easy to talk. I learned that the main store is located in Mibu and has been selected as one of the top 100 stores. Before I knew it, the Betayaki was ready. It was large! I got carried away with the conversation and forgot to mention that I have a small appetite. I declared that I would leave some uneaten. I used a spatula to eat it, following the Hiroshima style. - The crispy texture of the cabbage - The crunchy oil residue - The soba noodles were just right, crispy and delicious - The real squid had a nice bounce to it, enhancing the flavor - The mayonnaise on the surface had a slightly strong salty taste, possibly due to the day's temperature and humidity. Overall, it was a good first experience. Looking forward to my next visit! I was planning to go the next day as well, but I had to travel to "Yokkaichi," so maybe next time in December?
