Located in front of the station, this is a long-established restaurant known for its quick and delicious tempura rice bowl. It is a stand tempura rice bowl shop near the west exit (north exit) of Ikebukuro Station. Despite being called a stand, it is not a standing eatery. The shop is small and simple, usually only consisting of a high counter and high chairs. In the west exit of Ikebukuro Station, there are other old and famous shops like the Western food restaurant "Check," known as a "stand Western food shop," and "San Marco" and "Curry House," known as "stand curry shops." Even "Gyu no Ie" is called a "stand steak shop," and the slightly larger "Manmaru" is even referred to as a "stand eel shop." The "Shrimp Tempura Bowl" (1,000 yen) is as shown in the photo. I have loved the "Jumbo Tempura Bowl" for over 30 years, but in the past three to four years, I have started to eat this "Shrimp Tempura Bowl" about one out of five times. I won't go into details, but it is a delicious tempura bowl served quickly, fried for about three to four minutes. It is perfect for when you are in a hurry or need a quick snack before drinking. I am satisfied once again this time. Thank you for the meal. In terms of taste alone, it may not be necessary to come here specifically. I don't think I have ever rated the taste of this restaurant above "4.0." However, I keep coming back because of its location, convenience, and cost performance. I have been a customer for about 35 years now. (By Kyonatsu Shukuu, 1/31/2023) (483 reviews/3.49)

I visited the restaurant in the early afternoon on a regular day, and there were a few seats available. I ordered the large serving of tempura rice bowl and pickles, and waited for a bit. It must have been nearly 20 years since I last visited. I haven't really left Ikebukuro, but I just haven't been here in a while. I used to come here quite often. The tempura rice bowl arrived. The tempura looked more white than dark brown, and the dipping sauce didn't look too thick. I started eating, alternating between taking a bite of tempura and rice. The squid was thick but tender and delicious. The shrimp had a nice texture and was tasty too. Of course, the other tempura pieces were also delicious. The dipping sauce, although not visually dark, had a slightly strong flavor. Be careful because it tends to settle at the bottom of the bowl, so if you don't mix it well, you might end up with parts that are too salty. The pickles were a good amount for the price of 100 yen, but they weren't very pickled, which was a bit disappointing. I thought pickles were necessary to cleanse the palate when eating a tempura rice bowl, but maybe the pickled ginger that came with the bowl was enough. Overall, it was my first time in a long time at Fuji, and it was delicious. It was lunchtime, and it seemed like many people were ordering the shrimp tempura rice bowl. However, the squid was also delicious. If they had a squid and shrimp tempura rice bowl, I would definitely go for that. I'll try to visit again soon. The piping hot freshly fried tempura rice bowl at this price is definitely a great deal. It's a different league from the fancy and upscale tempura rice bowls. I like both styles, but there's something about the slightly more rough and unrefined tempura rice bowl that makes it taste better.

I ordered the special seafood tempura rice bowl (shrimp, squid, chrysanthemum greens, shishito peppers, conger eel, seaweed). The tempura was crispy and not just relying on the batter. However, the sauce in the bowl was quite strong, getting too salty after a while. They serve it hot and fresh, so you can enjoy it while it's still warm.

The appearance of the restaurant looks very old. The interior also shows that it is an old establishment. The seating is limited and not very comfortable. However, don't let that stop you from trying their tempura bowl! The tempura bowl costs 800 yen and includes shrimp, sandfish, squid, chrysanthemum greens, seaweed, and green pepper. The shrimp and sandfish are prepared well, so you won't encounter the problem of meat sticking to the shell as often seen in shrimp tempura. The sandfish, in particular, is delicious! Even if you're not a fan of white fish tempura, you might change your mind after trying it here. It's not fishy and has a light, fluffy texture that is very tasty. I've tried the jumbo size as well, and it's truly jumbo, so save that for when you're feeling extra hungry. The regular size is more than enough. As for payment, the usual system is to pay when the food arrives, but it's also fine to pay when you finish your meal. Many people seem to pay after they finish. It's a bit messy to handle money with tempura oil on your hands.

①When I was in my 20s and 30s before starting my food blog, I used to come here often, but since moving from Ikebukuro and starting the blog, I've only been here once at "Tendon Fuji." ②In light of recent inflation trends, and also to check the prices, I decided to come back even though I wasn't very hungry, as I was at Ikebukuro Station around 3:30 PM on a Wednesday.

At the Ikebukuro Nishiguchi area at night, where there seems to be no shortage of dining options, it may be a challenge to find a place to eat without drinking after around 9 pm. When I was debating whether to take the train home, I noticed this place was still open and decided to go in. I ordered the shrimp tempura bowl. I realized later that all the tempura here is shrimp! It seems like everyone was ordering tempura bowls for the shrimp. Shrimp tempura is definitely a favorite of mine, but I don't have a special attachment to eating shrimp separately in a tempura bowl and avoiding it in favor of other fish or vegetable tempura (laughs). But upon further thought, this menu is probably the right choice for enjoying shrimp tempura. Perhaps the pricing at typical tempura restaurants is distorted, as shrimp tempura is usually priced higher when it's included in a tempura bowl. By the way, among the shrimp, there was one green pepper. A green pepper among the red ones, so to speak. The tempura was crispy and crunchy, with the shrimp inside cooked perfectly without becoming tough. The batter was thin and well-seasoned, making it a good deal for shrimp lovers as you can enjoy three pieces. You can order and pay at the counter, and the service is efficient without the hassle of touch screen ticket machines that have made things more complicated at some restaurants nowadays. It's a retro eatery without a food ticket machine, where you can easily order and enjoy your meal. Next time, I will make sure to check the menu more thoroughly to try something other than shrimp. Thank you for the meal.

★Ikebukuro Tendon★Located just a 1-minute walk from Ikebukuro North Exit, this tendon restaurant is still operating as it was a few years ago when I last visited. The tendon costs 800 yen with miso soup included. The seating is only at the counter, and they only accept cash payment after ordering. The tendon was hot and delicious, and I can't wait to try their anago donburi next time.

I visited "Tendon Fuji," located just a short walk from Ikebukuro West Exit, where you can enjoy freshly fried tempura rice bowls. The restaurant is small with only a counter seating. You place your order and then the chef fries the tempura for you. This time, I ordered the Anago Tempura Rice Bowl (800 yen), which includes eel, seaweed, shishito pepper, and chrysanthemum greens. The hot tempura is crispy and light, with a satisfying crunch. It's a delightful experience to enjoy the tempura on top of rice soaked in sauce. Check out my blog for more reviews of top tempura restaurants across the country.

I really appreciate being able to eat a hearty meal at this price near the station during my lunch break at work! The batter is moist, and the sweet and savory sauce goes really well with the rice. The shrimp is, of course, delicious, and personally, the tempura seaweed is also excellent. The payment is made by exchanging money at the time of serving the dishes, so it's better to be prepared in advance for a smooth transaction!

Located near the west exit of Ikebukuro Station, this long-established tempura rice bowl restaurant has only 10 counter seats. They offer 6 types of tempura rice bowls, and as a first-time visitor, I ordered the classic "tempura rice bowl" for 800 yen. It came with shrimp, sandfish, squid, chrysanthemum greens, seaweed, and green pepper. The shrimp was small, but considering the price, it was understandable. The tempura was fried well overall, with a slightly sweet sauce that paired nicely with the rice. Close to the station, quick, delicious, and affordable. It's a great restaurant.

I feel like having a quick bite to eat and not in the mood for ramen or Chinese food, so I occasionally go to Tendon Fujisan, just a minute from Ikebukuro North Exit. The location is good, maybe that's why there were a few groups of foreign tourists there and about 80% of the seats were taken. The tempura bowl had shrimp, whiting, squid, chrysanthemum greens, seaweed, and shishito peppers, with a not too sweet sauce that was just right. I think it's a good value for the price.

Today, I had some errands to run in Ikebukuro. I was really hungry, so I wanted to eat something substantial. The restaurant I visited this time was Ten-don Fuji, located right near the west exit of Ikebukuro Station. The restaurant has a big red wall sign and red curtains, giving it a slightly historical feel. When you open the sliding door, you are greeted by counter seats. The staff will ask you to choose your seat, and you can place your order verbally. You pay for your meal in cash when it arrives. I ordered the Special Ten-don for 1100 yen. It arrived in about five minutes, along with miso soup. The ten-don was piled high with tempura, completely covering the rice underneath. At the top were shrimp tempura, followed by two pieces of conger eel tempura. In front of the bowl were squid tempura, underneath were chrysanthemum tempura, nori tempura, and shishito pepper tempura. The shrimp tempura had a slightly moist coating, and the shrimp itself was not overcooked. The sweet and savory sauce complemented the shrimp's flavor nicely. The conger eel tempura was cut into easy-to-eat pieces, unlike some other places where they serve a whole eel tempura for presentation. The delicate flavor of the conger eel was delicious on its own, but adding shichimi pepper really enhanced the taste. The squid tempura was about 1 cm thick, not too chewy and easy to eat. It was just as delicious as the shrimp tempura. The chrysanthemum tempura was placed in a large open shape on top of the rice under the squid tempura. It had a unique aroma and bitterness that I really enjoyed. The nori and shishito pepper tempura were both small but added a nice touch to elevate the ten-don. The miso soup was average. I didn't order the extra toppings this time, but they are available for an additional 100 yen. The portion of rice was generous, and with plenty of pickled ginger on the side, I was full by the end of the meal. The staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was comfortable. Overall, it was really delicious. As I mentioned earlier, it's a prepayment system where you pay before receiving your food, so it's a good idea to have small change ready. Thank you for the meal.

As rumored, this place offers fast and affordable tendon (tempura rice bowl) that is perfect for when you want a hearty meal. The taste is great - not refined tempura, but rather bold in flavor with slightly heavy oil, balanced perfectly with the sauce and firm rice. The amount of sauce and rice is just right. I had the jumbo tendon this time, but I might try the special tendon with conger eel next time.

I ordered the shrimp tempura rice bowl. As always, the food comes out quickly. When I was a university student, I used to live near this place and would come here often. Especially when I got paid from my part-time job. Even after 30 years, the restaurant's appearance and taste remain unchanged, bringing back nostalgic memories. I took a bite before taking a photo. I couldn't resist!

Visit on a holiday night. The shop, with only 9 seats at the counter, had just one seat available, so I was able to sit down without waiting. I ordered a regular tendon for 800 yen. It had shrimp, kisu fish, squid, chrysanthemum greens, shishito pepper, seaweed, all the standard ingredients. Considering the price, of course each piece was small, but having all these tempura ingredients for just 800 yen is amazing. The sauce was slightly sweet. I particularly enjoyed the chrysanthemum greens.

Tendon Fuji @ Ikebukuro West Exit Jumbo Tendon $1,000 Score 3.9/5
The contents include 2 shrimp, 2 smelt fish, squid, chrysanthemum greens, seaweed, and rice in a large portion. The size of each ingredient is normal to slightly small, like a bento box tempura. The tempura batter is relatively thin, but the squid, smelt fish, and shrimp have a good texture. The tempura sauce has a perfect balance of sweetness and spiciness, and it was delicious! Even if the tempura runs out, you can eat three bowls of rice with just this tempura sauce (lol). In a major metropolitan area, being able to eat this amount of tempura for just one bill seems like a good deal. If it were a lunch in Osaka, you could probably eat it for around $700 (lol). Nevertheless, considering the high cost of living and the fact that it's in Ikebukuro, a super busy area, the cost performance may not be bad either. #TendonFuji #IkebukuroTendon

I had an anago tendon. It includes anago, shishito peppers, haru-giku, and nori. It's truly the best. You can eat such a delicious tendon for 800 yen, just a 1-minute walk from Ikebukuro. Plus, it comes with miso soup. The portion is satisfying for a dinner for a man in his 20s.

I stopped by before work in the evening, and it was quick, cheap, and delicious. I ordered the tempura bowl for 800 yen. I love spring vegetables, so having all my favorite ingredients at this price is amazing! The careful preparation and cooking really make a difference. The miso soup was simple but comforting, and it stayed warm even after finishing the tempura bowl. I used to think it might be awkward for a woman to dine alone here, but I want to come back again before work!

I have never been there for some reason, but I know it well... When it comes to Ikebukuro, I can usually figure it out by looking at the shops K-san has visited. Tenfuji is one of K-san's everyday dining spots, so I haven't made a special trip there yet, but I'll go there someday with the feeling of "Oh, let's go in." The red sign with white letters saying "Tendon Fuji" stands out during the day in Ikebukuro, near the northwest exit, similar to Kanda with diagonal roads, pink-themed alleys, and small buildings mixed in. On the way back from a unique shop near the rotary, zigzagging towards the station, I remember seeing it near the intersection. They used to call it jumbo and you had to pay 1000 yen in advance... Wait a minute... Four shrimp tempura in the shrimp tempura bowl... Are there shrimp and green peppers in it? The smell inside the store is a bit... Is it okay? It seems to be a long-established tendon restaurant founded in 1927, not a formal tempura restaurant, but one where you can eat standing up in about 10-15 minutes, and it's almost 100 years old... Isn't that amazing? The lady from a little while ago said she didn't want green peppers in her shrimp tempura bowl... She looks foreign, but she has a Japanese face... I wonder if the old man frying in the back understood... The interior of the store is old but clean and well-maintained. The veteran woman who also handles calls from suppliers. The jumbo and special are default large servings, and the shrimp tempura bowl is slightly larger than normal. Four shrimp tempura is nice. Even if you eat two, there are still two left. A shrimp tempura bowl with less than three shrimp is just a regular tempura bowl. I'm sure they don't serve prawn tempura. More importantly, they added seaweed tempura instead of green peppers... The tempura is hidden under the seaweed. The sauce is light, but it soaks into the rice well. The oil is sharp, the aroma is okay, and the slightly firm rice is cooked to my liking. This is a good place for anyone using Ikebukuro anytime.
