Maruken Suisan, located about a 4-minute walk from JR Akabane Station East Exit, is a specialty shop for processed fish products and oden ingredients. With over 60 years of history in Akabane, they offer handmade flavors. The processed fish products are meticulously made by hand, from filleting the fish one by one to shaping them. Satsuma-age can be enjoyed with mayonnaise, soy sauce, or as a side dish with rice, snack, or dessert. Hanpen can be added to soup or baked in a toaster for a delicious treat. In addition to processed fish products, they also sell oden ingredients such as potatoes, daikon radish, beef tendon, kelp, konjac, eggs, and shirataki noodles. An important point to note is that they offer an eat-in option for oden. There is a pot of oden ingredients simmering on the counter, available for enjoyment throughout the year, unlike the seasonal oden at convenience stores. The eat-in rules include ordering at least 3 oden items per person, no sharing of oden sets, bringing soft drinks is allowed but alcohol must be purchased from the shop, a 20-minute time limit, no smoking, and no treating or being treated by others. The shop is located in the Silk Road arcade in Akabane Ichiban-gai, making it convenient even on rainy days. Around noon on weekdays, there are usually about 5 people standing and enjoying their oden. The standing oden set costs 850 yen and includes 5 standard items plus a choice of drink. The oden items include egg, kelp, wiener roll, fish cake, and a choice item. I chose a highball drink to go with my oden. The oden at Maruken Suisan has a higher quality taste compared to convenience store oden, and it's even better enjoyed during the winter months. The standing oden rules add to the unique experience. Luckily, I managed to avoid getting too drunk this time. In this alternate world line, a possibly intoxicated person was peacefully napping on the floor of the Keihin-Tohoku Line train.
