Today's lunch, I wanted to go to the popular curry restaurant "Yogorou" in Jingumae, but around 12:45, there was a line of about 10 people. Despite the Tokyo governor holding an emergency press conference last night due to the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases, it seems that popularity here is unaffected (bitter smile). So I passed by and went to the tempura restaurant "Matsubayashi" a few shops ahead. This is a popular restaurant frequented by celebrities (colorful paper autographs cover almost the entire wall), but on this day, there were only 2 previous customers. Perhaps this place is affected by the new coronavirus. Prompted by the owner, who seemed to be managing alone, I sat at the counter in the back. I was handed a menu along with tea and a hot towel, and was recommended to try the lunch set which was a good deal. So, I changed my mind from the tempura bowl to the tempura set menu with choices A, B, and C, and ordered the B in the middle. "Is this your first time having our tempura? Be careful, it's hot," I was warned (laughs). The first tray that came out was extravagant. Along with tempura dipping sauce, salt, lemon, pickles, there were onion salad, oyster miso pickles, and rice and miso soup. While eating the appetizer, I waited for the tempura to be fried. The first tempura that came out were 3 types of vegetables like enoki and shiso. Again, I was reminded to be careful as they were hot. Then, various vegetable tempura like pumpkin were served, followed by 2 shrimp tempura. The shrimp had a crispy coating with a juicy texture inside, perfectly fried. A unique item was the "rice tempura. Please try it," they said. When I tried it, it was more like mochi than rice. "Would you like to try the oyster tempura?" I enthusiastically replied "Yes!" and a large oyster tempura was served. "This is our pride and joy tempura. Be careful, it's hot," the third warning (laughs). Indeed, it was hot, but delicious. The umami of the oyster was firmly locked in the batter. Although it was said to be the last tempura, after a while, I was asked if I wanted more vegetable tempura, and I cheerfully said "Yes!" for the second time. Cabbage, burdock, and 3 other items were served. Despite the casual atmosphere, the taste was top-notch. It was a satisfying lunch experience.
