Holiday Food Walk *Late December Food Walk Review
With all my work for 2018 completed, I decided to go out on the first day of the new year. Last year, I visited Tsukiji Market, but this year, with the market moving to Toyosu, I wondered if I should go there instead. Or perhaps I should visit Ameyoko, which is bustling with activity at the end of the year? If I were to buy sweets, Ameyoko would be fine, but for seafood, Tsukiji or Toyosu would be better. Since the shops inside Tsukiji are still operating outside, I decided to go to Tsukiji again this year. To minimize wasted time, I had already decided on the shops to visit.
I left home before 8 am and arrived at Tsukiji around 9:20 am. Although it wasn't peak time yet, many customers were already shopping outside Tsukiji Market. My first stop was for breakfast at a hidden sushi restaurant called "Hikobei," located about a 3-minute walk east from Tsukiji Market Station A1 exit on the Oedo Subway Line. While there are shops along the main street, the main restaurant is a hidden gem in the back alley. It was recommended by Terry Ito on the TBS program "The Best Restaurant in Life." When I told the male staff member outside that I wanted to dine there, the back alley restaurant was already full of customers. Another staff member (perhaps the manager) came out and offered a seat along the main street. I didn't mind as long as I could eat. I entered the restaurant.
There were only a few seats at the counter, and only the one I sat at was available. The staff member asked if I had seen the restaurant on TV, to which I replied that I had. The influence of TV seemed significant. While I sometimes use TV or magazines as a reference for food walks, I don't exclusively aim to dine at places featured there. It felt a bit embarrassing to join the ranks of fickle customers, but I endured it for the sake of delicious food. The Hikobei Special set included 9 pieces with a big tuna belly, egg, and of course, anago sushi. The anago sushi was soft and melted in the mouth. It was indeed of high quality compared to what I've had before. The toro sashimi on top of the akami is a service from the restaurant. Eating this was a luxurious experience. The sweet and plump shrimp and the melty toro were delicious. It was a very luxurious breakfast. It was rare to have simmered oyster sushi. The anago's deliciousness lived up to the rumors. I'm curious about the anago donburi as well. Although the restaurant was crowded, it's better to visit a reputable establishment rather than wait in a half-hearted line and pay a high price for a meal. The staff were very friendly and provided good service. This is just the beginning; the real adventure continues! I will continue my tour of Tsukiji. The next day, I will go to buy gifts for a mochi pounding event at my relative's house.
