I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! As the title suggests, this is the ultimate cost-effective restaurant with Chinese noodles for ¥460 and 6 crispy dumplings for ¥230. I visited yesterday for the first time in a while, and the prices were still the same. It was cold yesterday, so I was definitely in the mood for ramen. I had some business in the Nishi-Shinjuku area for the first time since Odakyu Department Store started construction, so I headed straight to Hikari-san without hesitation. Just past the 11 am opening, a bit early for lunch. I thought it might be more relaxing that way, but half of the seats were already taken. I bought my meal ticket at the ticket machine. This time, I got the Chashu noodles and crispy dumplings. The crispy dumplings here are called "Crispy Dumplings" and yes, they are 6 for ¥230 as in the title. The Chashu noodles are ¥730 (so cheap!) so I got change for ¥1,000!! I placed the meal ticket on the counter in front of the seat and said, "I'll have this, please." The owner glanced at us, but focused on cooking. There are only 10 counter seats (one seat reduced due to the pandemic, with wider spacing for single use), and the owner cooks alone, so he can't afford to be friendly. Despite having only 10 seats, there are 3 types of ramen: soy sauce, miso, and salt, as well as tantanmen and dandan noodles. There are also rice dishes like fried rice and Chinese bowl dishes, as well as crispy dumplings, boiled dumplings, and shumai. He cooks all of that alone. (There is another woman, possibly his wife or a part-time worker, but the owner is overwhelmingly busy.) Probably just before me, the previous customer entered the restaurant, so there was no food in front of anyone yet. Because of that, I waited for almost 10 minutes, but it was no problem. "Sorry to keep you waiting," said the owner a little apologetically, and first served the Chashu noodles. When I received it, I couldn't help but smile. A slightly small bowl with the restaurant's name on it, lined with 5 slices of Chashu, plenty of bamboo shoots, a boiled egg, and boiled spinach piled up. Amazing!! This is a lot for ¥730! The gentle soy sauce soup has a well-balanced saltiness based on chicken broth. The taste of the soup is worthy of the name "Chinese noodles." Delicious. The dumplings arrived 2-3 minutes later. The dumplings were neatly arranged on a plate, with a crispy surface. As the name "Crispy Dumplings" suggests, the surface was crispy. The size is a bit small, similar to the dumplings at "Gyoza no Manshu." When I worked in Nishi-Shinjuku, I used to have these dumplings with beer after work. The dim sum here, such as boiled dumplings and shumai, is also delicious. There's so much more I want to say but can't fit it all in. Nishi-Shinjuku, in the Nishi-Shinjuku area, is a fierce battleground for ramen, but as a Shinjuku gourmet, I recommend Hikari-san! I'm grateful that Hikari-san is still working hard at these prices despite the high cost of living. I'm grateful that the restaurant is still here, overcoming the pandemic. Thank you for the meal. I'll be back!
