[Tendon・Tempura Rice Bowl at Tenkichiya]・Tempura Rice Bowl ¥1,900・Draft Beer ¥670Located at Shinjuku Nomura Building B2FMy friend recommended this place to me as really delicious, so I decided to give it a try! We arrived around 12 o'clock. There was a line of about 10 people in front of us, but they were moving quickly and we were seated in the restaurant in less than 5 minutes. My friend ordered the Tenkichi Don, while I opted for the delicious Tempura Rice Bowl. The Tenkichi Don was a towering bowl of tempura reminiscent of the Shinjuku skyscrapers, with a generous portion of crispy tempura exuding a fragrant aroma of sauce. It looked incredibly delicious! (I didn't take a photo). The Tempura Rice Bowl allows you to enjoy the flavors in three different ways - first as a tempura set meal, then as a tempura rice bowl with sauce, and finally as a tempura tea-soaked rice dish. The flat shrimp tempura is served in a unique style where two shrimp tempura pieces are combined into one "raft tempura," with a total of four shrimp tempura included. Both my friend and I love shrimp, so we were very happy about this. The tempura batter was crispy, light, and had a good bite. The shrimp was plump and delicious, but the cod wrapped in shiso leaves was fluffy! The smelt fish was also fluffy! Crispy and fluffy! It was so delicious that I lost my words (laughs). Next, for the second round, we placed eggplant and shrimp on the rice, poured sauce over it, and enjoyed it as a tempura rice bowl. Crispy, fluffy, sweet, and delicious! For the third round, we placed mixed tempura on top of the rice, poured dashi broth over it, and savored it as a tempura tea-soaked rice dish. (I always think it looks better to sprinkle chopped seaweed after pouring the broth). The dashi broth enhanced the flavor of the mixed tempura, while the wasabi added a refreshing kick. It was the perfect way to end the meal! Although the price may seem a bit high at first glance, considering the four shrimp, cod wrapped in shiso leaves, smelt fish, green pepper, eggplant, seaweed, mixed tempura with squid and onion, and the fact that miso soup and rice refills are free, it actually feels quite reasonable. I left feeling more than satisfied. It was delicious! #Tenkichiya #TempuraRiceBowlTenkichiyaShinjukuBranch #NishiShinjukuGourmet #NishiShinjukuLunch #TempuraRiceBowl #TempuraRiceBowlSetMeal #ThreeDeliciousWays #DefiniteRepeat

I visited around 1 pm on a regular day. There was no line at the underground shop, but I was the first in line and waited for about 5 minutes before being seated inside. The counter seats were for one person only, and there were quite a few solo diners at the table seats. I ordered a small tempura rice bowl and udon set. While sipping on the cold tea on the table, the food arrived in about 15 minutes. I started with the udon to avoid burning my mouth with the freshly fried tempura. The broth turned out to be hotter than I expected, and I ended up burning my mouth a bit. After letting it cool down a bit, I enjoyed the delicious broth. The udon had only seaweed as toppings and lacked chewiness, but it was still tasty. The small tempura rice bowl had short, fat shrimp which were delicious. The rice was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of sauce, and I finished the meal by breaking up the egg tempura. It was delicious. The prices were a bit high, but the portion size was decent. I didn't feel bloated afterwards, so I think they use good quality oil for frying.

I had lunch on a weekday at a tempura restaurant in the underground mall of Shinjuku Nishiguchi. I chose the Tenkichi Don, which has won the National Donburi Grand Prix gold award for nine consecutive years, priced at 1650 yen. The tempura shrimp is fried in a set of two, giving the illusion of a generous portion. Other ingredients include cod, squid, green beans, eggplant, seaweed, and a runny egg yolk. My companion had the Ooebi Don for 1550 yen, with shrimp that were not particularly large. The atmosphere in the restaurant is calm, but the staff did not provide any explanations. The lunch is a bit on the expensive side, but considering the quality, it's worth it once in a while.

When I arranged to meet up with someone, we decided to go to Shinjuku to explore some delicious gourmet options. Among them, finding a good tempura place in Shinjuku is not that common, but I discovered one. Looking at the map, it was located in the Nomura Building, which was unexpected. There are quite a few tasty restaurants in the basement of this building. Since there are many companies around, there were a lot of people on their lunch break and foreigners as well. The default amount of sauce for the tempura is minimal, so you can fully enjoy each piece of tempura. You can adjust the sauce to your liking afterwards, which is also a good point. And most importantly, the ochazuke (rice with tea poured over it) you have after finishing the white rice and nori tempura is incredibly satisfying. Being able to enjoy it twice for this price is worth it. It's a place you can casually visit, so I will definitely come back again!

Near the office in Nishi-Shinjuku, I had a lunch of tempura. It's not an area where I usually have lunch, as it's a bit away from Shinjuku Station, but the food here was really delicious. Closer to Tokyo Metro Nishi-Shinjuku Station than Shinjuku Station, in the basement of Shinjuku Nomura Building, there is a place called "Tendon Tempura Tempuraya". It seems to be quite crowded on weekdays due to being in an office area, but since it was the weekend, we were able to get in after a 15-minute wait. The restaurant is spacious, with seating for about 30 people at the counter and tables. The fragrant smell of oil is nice. This time, I ordered the "Tempura Combination (1,900 yen)", where you can enjoy three different ways of eating tempura. The tempura included 4 pieces of "shrimp raft fry" made with shrimp, deep-fried cod and shiso leaf, squid and onion tempura, smelt fish, green beans, eggplant, and seaweed, totaling 7 varieties. It's quite a generous portion. The shrimp, although small, were delicious with a good texture and sweetness. I enjoyed the tempura with tempura dipping sauce and salt, then moved on to the tempura rice bowl style. I placed the deep-fried cod and shiso leaf on rice, poured the tempura sauce over it, and it was a great combination of flaky cod and sweet tempura sauce. Lastly, I made a tempura tea bowl by placing squid and onion tempura on rice, adding wasabi and seaweed, and pouring plenty of hot dashi broth over it. The wasabi helped cut through the oiliness, and the broth soaked into the crispy tempura coating was delicious. The perfect way to finish a tempura meal is with a tempura tea bowl. It's a bit far from Shinjuku Station, in an office area where I don't often go, but I wouldn't mind going back when I'm in the office again. I entered the restaurant at around 11:20 on Saturday. It's about a six-minute walk from Nishi-Shinjuku Station on the Marunouchi Line (if you don't get lost in the underground passage). The restaurant has 8 counter seats and about 10 table seats, and it was almost full. The interior of the restaurant is clean, and there are many foreign tourists. I ordered the "Tenkichi Don" for 1650 yen. It was served in just eight minutes and was obviously freshly fried, so everything was delicious. Personally, I really enjoyed the pickles on the table. It's a good restaurant that you can reach without getting wet in the underground passage.

During the Obon holiday lunchtime, I tried two curry shops but they were both full. Feeling a bit discouraged, I headed to a tempura restaurant where there was a line of 15 people, including tourists. I hesitated for a moment but decided to wait in line, fearing I might end up as a lunch refugee if I didn't. Finally, after a 20-minute wait, I got inside and ordered the most popular dish, "tempura bowl". It came with miso soup, pickles, and unlimited ginger. The tempura included 2 prawns, cod, squid, half-cooked egg, green beans, eggplant, and seaweed with sesame oil. The tempura was flavorful and paired well with the special dipping sauce. The menu stated 4 prawns but they used thinner prawns and made it into 2 pieces. A bit disappointing, but the quality was still good. Overall, it was a satisfying meal.

Accompanied my dad to his annual health check-up and decided to have lunch at this affiliated restaurant afterwards. It was a hot day, so we ordered a bottle of beer to share! The ice-cold beer was so refreshing. I tried their signature dish, the Tenkichi Don for ¥1,650, which came with four prawns, cod, squid, half-boiled egg, green beans, eggplant, seaweed, and miso soup. The prawns were on the smaller side but were crispy and delicious. The tempura was generously piled on top, and the sauce was just the right balance of sweet and spicy. The portion size was great for the price, especially in Nishi-Shinjuku. Definitely a good deal! #Tenkichiya #TenDon #TenMabushi #TenkichiDon #Impressive #GenerousPortions #GenerousPortionLunch #KirinIchiban #HappyHour #ShinjukuLunch #ShinjukuGourmet #NishiShinjukuLunch #NishiShinjukuGourmet #TempuraLovers #TempuraDonLovers #Foodies #TokyoGourmet #TokyoFoodTour #TokyoFoodieCommunity

I chose the most orthodox Tenkichi Don. It was unusual to have citrus peel that tasted like yuzu on top, but thanks to that, it was refreshing and very delicious. The Natsu Ten Don that my boss ordered also looked delicious. I wonder if they have new seasonal menus like that. It's great!

I usually use this place for lunch. It's located in the basement of an office building, so it was crowded during the day, but the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming even for solo diners. I had to wait a bit, but since it was my first time, I ordered the famous Tenkichi Don. My impression was simply delicious! The tempura coating was crispy, the sauce on the rice was just right, not too strong. If you still feel hungry, you can of course order more. The tempura was packed with ingredients, especially the thick and fluffy cod and the runny egg yolk overflowing, creating a memorable experience as it mixed with the rice. I devoured it with the classic shrimp tempura. Next time, I want to try the Tenmabushi with flavor variations for a double enjoyment!

On a regular day at 13:20, there were 10 people waiting for about 25 seats. The restaurant was not full, but for some reason, there was a wait. The turnover was relatively fast! I sat down at 13:33 and immediately ordered the Tenkichi Don for 1,650 yen. Surprisingly, there were many Korean customers. At the table, they served barley tea, pickled ginger, pickles, and sauce. If you ask, they will also provide shichimi and sansho. It would be even better if they added tempura to the menu. The tempura was prepared by two female staff members, one elderly man and one part-time female staff. At 13:44, the tempura was served with sauce poured over the top, and additional sauce was provided separately. They also provided a plate to separate the tempura from the sauce, showing attention to detail. The miso soup was simple with seaweed and trefoil, and you could ask for refills. The shrimp tempura looked like 2 pieces, but each piece was actually 2 shrimp. At first, the portion of rice seemed small, but it turned out to be just right as I ate. The taste was good, the cost performance was good, thank you for the meal!

I felt like having tendon for lunch on my day off. There are many in the downtown area of Asakusa, but I didn't feel like going that far. It's good that international travelers have returned (although there are some downsides), but I don't like throwing myself into crowded places. Especially in this heat, I feel like I might pass out in a crowd of people. I searched for a place within walking distance from my home and found this restaurant. It's not too far but not too close either. It takes about 20 minutes to walk there at a leisurely pace. I thought I would sweat a lot in the scorching sun, but I figured that if I had tendon and beer, it would be delicious and worth it. The restaurant is located in the basement of the Nomura Building in Shinjuku's subcenter. There are quite a few eateries in this basement. Although not very noticeable, on weekdays, a ridiculous number of office workers work in this area, so most restaurants probably fill up quickly during lunchtime. It may be a little better on weekends, but this restaurant seemed to be popular as there were quite a few customers, and later a group of four Chinese or Singaporean/Hong Kong women also entered. Perhaps it has gained some popularity among overseas customers through Instagram or something. Tendon is definitely a Japanese dish. I hope they enjoy it. I ordered the "Tenkichi Don" for 1,650 yen. It's cheap for tendon. The toppings on the rice include 4 shrimp, cod, squid, half-cooked egg, green beans, eggplant, and seaweed. It also comes with miso soup. They even serve a plate with shrimp heads placed neatly on top. It's quite a generous portion. Shrimp is essential for tendon, but 4 may be a bit too many. Personally, I think it would be better to reduce it by one and add other toppings instead... The amount of sauce when it was first served was a bit lacking. You can add more from the table. The sauce itself is not too sweet or too spicy. The clean counter seats create a comfortable atmosphere. When I finished eating and said thank you, the response was very pleasant. It's a well-balanced restaurant. It's a shame they don't have tempura rice bowls...

I visited "Tenkichiya Shinjuku Store" located in Shinjuku Nomura Building B2. (As of June 2023, rated 3.49 on Tabelog) This tempura restaurant always has a long line, so I was curious to try it out. I arrived around 11:40 on a weekday and managed to get the last table. By the time I left, there was already a line forming. Now, what should I eat? The prices for all dishes are quite high. ▪️ Large Shrimp Tempura Bowl 1,550 yen with miso soup. There was also a set with mini mixed tempura bowl and udon for 1,100 yen, but I wanted to enjoy the tempura, so I chose the large shrimp tempura bowl. The tempura consisted of 4 large shrimp, half-cooked egg, green beans, and seaweed. Unlike the overflowing tempura bowl (soba) from Asakusa Owariya Honten, the tempura here was a more modest size. The tempura was crispy and light, and the half-cooked egg tempura was fresh. There were pickled ginger, pickles, and extra dipping sauce on the table. The miso soup bowl felt thick at the drinking edge. (It's a minor detail, but I pay attention to the shape and sensation of things that touch my mouth.) Maybe I had too high expectations due to the price. (It seems they recently raised their prices.) I found out that they have won the Gold Award in the 9th National Donburi Grand Prix (consecutively). In Tokyo, the three shops that have won the Gold Award are as follows: - Tenkichiya (Tokyo) Tenkichiya Donburi - Kaneko Hannosuke (Tokyo) Edomae Tendon - Shitamachi Tendon Akimitsu (Tokyo) Godaime Tendon I feel like I understand why there is always a line. Thank you for the meal.

This place has recently become popular, with lines forming at certain times. The quality and quantity of tempura make it understandable. I was craving warm udon, but decided to try the meat udon instead. I thought the vegetable tempura bowl might not be satisfying, but it turned out to be delicious with lotus root, turnip, eggplant, and onion tempura all being voluminous and tasty. The udon had a gentle Kansai-style broth, which was really good.

On June 7, 2023 (Wednesday), I had dinner after a day of work in Murayama. I had some errands in Shinjuku in the evening, so I decided to search for a place to eat in Nishi-Shinjuku. I ended up at a restaurant in the Shops & Restaurants on the 2nd basement floor of the Nomura Building. It was 6:21 PM and about 80% of the seats were taken, so I was seated at the counter. I was torn between ordering the Tenkichi Don (1650 yen) or the Tempura Rice Bowl (1900 yen), but ultimately chose the Tempura Rice Bowl. I also decided to have a Kirin Ichiban Shibori draft beer (650 yen) for the night. The Tempura Rice Bowl was described as a tempura version of Hitsumabushi, with a three-step eating process: 1. Eat the tempura with sauce, 2. Eat it as a rice bowl, and 3. Eat it as a tea-soaked rice dish. The dish included 4 shrimp tempura, cod and shiso leaf tempura, squid and onion tempura, sand dab, green beans, eggplant, seaweed, and miso soup. The tempura and rice with miso soup were served first. 1. I tried the tempura with sauce first. It was decent. The tempura was freshly fried, so it was enjoyable, although it didn't have a special taste. 2. Next, I tried the tempura rice bowl. It was okay. Again, it lacked a special taste. 3. Lastly, I tried the tea-soaked rice dish. It was not as good as I expected. The crispy tempura became soggy quickly when soaked in the broth, diminishing the taste. The overall deliciousness of the tempura was not as pronounced when eaten this way. The total bill was 2550 yen. The best thing about this place is the reasonable price to enjoy tempura, so I thought maybe I should have ordered the tempura rice bowl instead. It was a sad day with the news of Astrud Gilberto's passing followed by the news of George Winston's passing.

I visited around 7:00 PM. There were two foreign customers waiting before me, and about five groups started lining up after me! It seems like there are many foreign visitors. Maybe the location is easy to access? After waiting for about 20 minutes, I finally got in! I was seated at the counter. I ordered the Tenkichi Don, but asked to have the eggplant removed since I really don't like it. The tempura shrimp was huge and so delicious! The green beans and soft-boiled egg were also tasty. The squid was fluffy, and the cod was big and satisfying. Women might get quite full from this meal. The miso soup was also delicious. I will definitely go back again!

The other day, I saw someone next to me eating delicious hot udon, so I ordered the udon set. However, if you don't specify, it will be served as cold udon, so I decided to try again. I clearly requested warm udon, and it was great. The noodles were thin, the broth was Kansai-style, and the hint of yuzu flavor was nice. The tempura was large and tasty. It used to be quite empty, but it seems to be gaining popularity, so you have to go early these days. The quality is quite high, so I'm satisfied.

Shortly after opening before noon (around 11:15), the restaurant was already full of customers. I was able to quickly find a seat at the counter since there was space available. After some hesitation, I decided to order the Tenkichi Donburi (¥1650). At the counter seat, chopsticks and a tea cup were already placed in the center, and a pot of cold roasted tea was placed at the edge of the table for self-service. The pot was filled to the brim with tea, making it difficult to pour without spilling. I wish they had put a little less tea in the pot. The dish arrived 17 minutes after ordering. The presentation was very beautiful, and the tempura was fried with great care. The tempura included 4 shrimp (although it looked like only 2, they were placed together and fried as 2), cod, squid, eggplant, half-cooked egg, green beans, and seaweed. The rice had not been drizzled with much tempura sauce, so it tasted better when I added the tempura sauce provided on the table. The portion of rice was small. It was nice to have ginger and pickles on the table for flavor variation. The tempura was delicious, with perfect frying and color.

Visited in search of heavenly tempura. Arrived around 18:30 on Friday. There were about 5 people waiting in line. Was seated in about 15 minutes. The restaurant had both counter and table seating, and about half of the customers seemed to be foreigners. It was my first time trying heavenly tempura. It took about 10 minutes from ordering to being served. When I asked how to eat it, they told me: 1) Tempura with tempura dipping sauce, 2) Tempura rice bowl with dipping sauce on the side, and 3) Tempura rice bowl with tempura, dashi broth, seaweed, and wasabi. It was fun to try the different ways of eating it, and it felt satisfying and worth the price. The tempura was crispy and had a good amount of filling. The cod and smelt were juicy and tender. The shrimp tempura was large and plump, with two shrimp in each piece. It was very satisfying to have two of those. Delicious! The tempura was tasty, but the sweet and rich dipping sauce on the tempura rice bowl was also very delicious. Lastly, the tempura rice bowl with dashi broth was also tasty, with the sweet onion in the tempura and a slightly salty broth. The portions were quite generous, so it's best to go when you're hungry. I left feeling satisfied and full. The value for the price was also very good. I will definitely come back. Thank you for the meal.

I visited on a regular day and waited for about 10 minutes. I ordered the "Tenmabushi" for 1900 yen, which I had been interested in after seeing it on Instagram. The restaurant was crowded with many office workers on their lunch break, and many were ordering the value set meals with tempura or tempura rice bowls. The rice was served in a traditional wooden tub, which looked very appealing. The "Tenmabushi" can be enjoyed in three ways - first as a tempura set meal, then as a tempura rice bowl with sauce, and finally as a tempura rice bowl with dashi poured over it. The tempura included 4 large prawns, cod and shiso leaf tempura, smelt fish, vegetable tempura, and more. The staff recommended saving the vegetable tempura for the tempura rice bowl with dashi. The tempura batter was quite thick, but all of the tempura was crispy and delicious. The portion size was quite generous, so those with smaller appetites may want to ask for less rice.
