Near the office in Nishi-Shinjuku, I had a lunch of tempura. It's not an area where I usually have lunch, as it's a bit away from Shinjuku Station, but the food here was really delicious. Closer to Tokyo Metro Nishi-Shinjuku Station than Shinjuku Station, in the basement of Shinjuku Nomura Building, there is a place called "Tendon Tempura Tempuraya". It seems to be quite crowded on weekdays due to being in an office area, but since it was the weekend, we were able to get in after a 15-minute wait. The restaurant is spacious, with seating for about 30 people at the counter and tables. The fragrant smell of oil is nice. This time, I ordered the "Tempura Combination (1,900 yen)", where you can enjoy three different ways of eating tempura. The tempura included 4 pieces of "shrimp raft fry" made with shrimp, deep-fried cod and shiso leaf, squid and onion tempura, smelt fish, green beans, eggplant, and seaweed, totaling 7 varieties. It's quite a generous portion. The shrimp, although small, were delicious with a good texture and sweetness. I enjoyed the tempura with tempura dipping sauce and salt, then moved on to the tempura rice bowl style. I placed the deep-fried cod and shiso leaf on rice, poured the tempura sauce over it, and it was a great combination of flaky cod and sweet tempura sauce. Lastly, I made a tempura tea bowl by placing squid and onion tempura on rice, adding wasabi and seaweed, and pouring plenty of hot dashi broth over it. The wasabi helped cut through the oiliness, and the broth soaked into the crispy tempura coating was delicious. The perfect way to finish a tempura meal is with a tempura tea bowl. It's a bit far from Shinjuku Station, in an office area where I don't often go, but I wouldn't mind going back when I'm in the office again.
