On this day, we had a celebratory meal for my younger daughter's birthday in Ebisu, and after that, we bought a cake as a family (@Patisserie Les Amis in Ebisu) and then I decided to extend my trip a bit to this shop in Daikanyama to get some bread for breakfast the next day. City Bakery was founded in 1990 in Union Square, New York, as a bakery originating from the United States. The founder is said to have been a television producer, so it seems like a new entry from a completely different industry. In 2010, on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the company planned to expand overseas, with Japan as its target. The company responsible for the expansion in Japan was FONS Co., Ltd., based in Karuizawa. The company is known for "Bakery & Restaurant Sawamura," soba restaurant "Kawakami-an," and creative cuisine "Sue Shigenori," and I have reviewed Sawamura's "Bakery & Restaurant Sawamura Shinjuku" and "Bread & Tapas Sawamura Hiroo," "Bakery & Cafe Sawamura Hiroo Plaza," and "Bakery & Cafe Sawamura Nakameguro," as well as Aoyama's "Kawakami-an," so it is a familiar company to me. The first City Bakery store in Japan opened in April 2013 as "The City Bakery UMEDA." It is a somewhat unusual strategy to start with Osaka instead of Tokyo, which is the standard for entering Japan. However, in the same year (2013), they opened stores in Shinagawa in November and Hiroo in December (The City Bakery Shinagawa, The City Bakery Hiroo Store), so it seems more like a result of property arrangements for the store openings rather than Tokyo being put on hold. They have gradually expanded their store network, and currently have a total of 28 stores, including 20 bakery & cafe stores, 7 restaurant stores, and 1 bar & burger store. Looking at their recent new store openings, after opening 5 stores in 2020 (including renovations), they opened "THE CITY BAKERY Gran Tree Musashi Kosugi" in Musashi Kosugi in April 2021, "THE CITY BAKERY Kyoto Kawaramachi" in Kyoto Kawaramachi in July, and our store in September, and "THE CITY BAKERY Nagoya" in Nagoya in October, showing that they have continued to aggressively expand their store network even during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, they opened "The City Bakery Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho" in Kioicho, Tokyo in April, and "THE CITY BAKERY Daimaru Kyoto Store" in Kyoto, following up with new store openings. They are continuing to expand their store network at a steady pace. Among the total of 28 stores, I have used 8 stores that I have used before, including the Shinagawa store, the first store in Osaka Umeda, the Tokyu Plaza Ginza store, the Nakameguro store, the Aoyama store, the Yokohama store, the Musashi Kosugi store, and the Akasaka store in January 2016, February 2018, January 2020, May 2020, November 2020, December 2020, June 2021, and January 2022, respectively. In other words, I really like their bread. Our store opened in Daikanyama in September 2021 and made a bold move into the fiercely competitive bakery district. The location is on the east side of Daikanyama Station. I visited the store around 2:00 PM on that day. The shop is located in a quiet residential area, but you can see people eating on the terrace seats in front of the store, creating a stylish atmosphere typical of Daikanyama. There is also a dining area inside the store, and it was quite crowded. The bread is displayed in the showcase in front and on the shelf to the right, and you order verbally and pay at the register on the left. Based on my past experiences, I have learned that when buying elaborate bread at City Bakery, it can be quite expensive, but plain bread is relatively affordable, so this time I decided to focus on plain bread. I purchased the following two items: - Focaccia @ 250 yen - Cornbread @ 280 yen Subtotal 530 yen Consumption tax 42 yen Total 572 yen Payment is made at the self-checkout machine. It's not cheap, but if I can get by with this price at City Bakery, I think it's fine.
