When I joined the company, I was initially hired as a probationary employee for about six months, and it made me feel anxious. I thought that if there were any issues, I might be asked to leave despite just starting at the company. It seems that for the company, they want to properly assess whether the person they hired has value or not. Speaking of which, another word for "initially" is "当用" in Japanese. Some companies also have a "登用" exam that employees need to pass to become regular employees. Recently, it was revealed that a journalist plagiarized an article from Kyodo News, and as a result, the book in question has been discontinued. Such news topics are not only limited to Japan but also extend to Western countries, America, Oceania, and Asia. Today's lunch is at a place called "Touyou," where they have a lunch menu with surprisingly good prices on weekdays. I ordered the "hamburger lunch set" as there are 10 different variations for the hamburger set alone. The logic of this place is a bit strange as the ginger pork dish costs 1380 yen, but the hamburger and ginger pork set is only 880 yen. Furthermore, the confusion continues as the spaghetti Napolitan costs 980 yen, while the curry rice is priced at 500 yen, making it seem like they are intentionally pricing certain items lower to encourage customers to order them. The ladies at the nearby table ordered parfaits and cream soda that looked Instagram-worthy. The decorations inside the restaurant exude a retro Showa era vibe, which I find charming. When the gratin dish arrived, I was warned that it was hot and not to touch it, which reminded me of a comedy skit by the comedy duo "Dacho Club" where they say "Don't push it." I started with the hamburger and found it to have a gentle, home-cooked meaty flavor. The sauce, made by mixing ketchup, had a homely taste. The salad with sesame dressing had a healthy and flavorful taste. The gratin's combination of cheese and cream stood out, with a hint of bitterness as an accent. The macaroni, like trying to find the answer, felt empty at its core. The miso soup with seaweed, though instant, also had a flavorful taste. While there were no surprising flavors, the taste of the Western-style meal in a retro Showa atmosphere was exceptional. I look forward to trying out their dessert options next time.
