The restaurant is located near Shinjuku Station's southeast exit at 3-35-7 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. It is very noticeable. I had been curious every time I passed by, and finally visited at 11:39 am on a Sunday. We were the first to arrive, but it quickly filled up. The customers were of various ages and groups, including couples. There was a female staff member wearing a Japanese apron, handling the service alone, while I assume there was someone in the kitchen preparing the food, which was brought out by an elevator. I ordered verbally the Tofu and Meat Set Meal for 840 yen, Ham and Eggs for 380 yen, and the Yae Gaki sake from Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture for 820 yen. The sake was served at 11:43 am, the Tofu and Meat Set Meal at 11:53 am, and the Ham and Eggs at 12 pm. The tofu had a delicious flavor, the rice was cooked perfectly, and I enjoyed the pickles, miso soup, and the Ham and Eggs on rice. I also ordered the Fried Fish for an additional 650 yen. The size of the fish was quite large, with a crispy exterior and a fluffy interior, and it was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

■Pork Cutlet Curry ¥900 ■Miso Soup ¥120 Finally tried out this local BM restaurant. The curry was on the sweeter side, but still had a nice kick from the spices that made me sweat a bit towards the end. The curry was thick and gooey, which I personally enjoy. The pork cutlet was nothing exceptional, but it paired perfectly with the curry. The pork cutlet curry had a nostalgic feel to it. Despite being in business for over 100 years, the restaurant was surprisingly clean. Above all, the operation run by the young female manager who single-handedly managed the first floor dining area was outstanding. Next time, I'll try the tofu and meat set meal that many other customers were ordering. Thank you for the meal.

At 12:30, the restaurant was full, but we only had to wait for about 5 minutes to be seated. The food was delicious and affordable. The meat tofu and mackerel were both very flavorful. I wanted rice but resisted since I was already drinking. The vinegar octopus had a nice acidity to it. The turnover at the restaurant is quick, maybe because many people only order rice. The meat tofu costs 490 yen, vinegar octopus 400 yen, and simmered mackerel 490 yen. I will definitely come back to this place in Shinjuku often. EST! EST! EST!

There is a famous long-established restaurant in the middle of Shinjuku that has been in business for over 100 years. The interior is somewhat narrow, with about 10 tables for 2-4 people each, but it is always crowded with customers. Among the many menu items such as set meals, rice bowls, and curry, I ordered the curry for 740 yen and the tonjiru (pork miso soup) for 290 yen, which were served in about 10 minutes. The curry had a slightly sweet taste with a medium level of spiciness, and the portion was just right. The tonjiru had plenty of ingredients and went well with the curry. The katsudon (pork cutlet bowl) and nikudofu (tofu with meat) seem to be popular, so I would like to try them next time if I have the chance.

Founded in 1915, this restaurant exudes a Showa-era or rather Taisho-era atmosphere. The friendly proprietress warmly greets customers and engages in conversation with regulars, creating a cozy and welcoming environment. The menu is extensive, offering a variety of options from set meals to individual dishes. For those who love traditional Japanese diners, the decision-making process can be quite difficult. I struggled between the signature meat and tofu set meal and the yellow curry, ultimately choosing the meat and tofu. The generous portion of rice seemed overwhelming at first, but the tofu and meat soaked in the flavorful broth paired perfectly with it. It's a sweet and savory delight that any man would appreciate! Apparently, the yellow curry is a popular item featured in recent publications, known as the "Curry of Happiness." I will definitely try it next time. Whether it's the curry cutlet, red fish simmered in soy sauce, grilled mackerel set meal, or any other option, I'm sure customers will find themselves pondering over the menu choices. If someone asks, "Is there a good diner around here?" this place is the perfect answer.

Met up with friends for a casual gathering and finally visited Nagano-ya. We toasted with ham and eggs and meat tofu! The meat tofu was delicious with a rich flavor. It seems to be a rule to order at least one dish per person when drinking. The female owner of the restaurant is a lively and funny Edo-style woman! Most people seem to come here for a meal and a light drink, so there's no need to linger. We also left after about an hour. The customers range from students to office workers. The old photos inside the restaurant are also nice. I would like to visit again. Thank you for the meal!

Shinjuku Station Southeast Exit, 20 seconds on foot. I decided to go in for some reason, even though many people have passed by there as if it were a normal thing. I don't know why, but I felt unnecessarily nervous. The atmosphere outside the shop seemed to emit a certain aura. Once inside, the atmosphere was fantastic, with old photos decorating the walls, creating a lovely ambiance. I didn't take any photos. The menu was typical of a traditional Japanese set meal restaurant. After some hesitation, I ended up ordering a pork cutlet bowl. It was served in about 5 minutes. Ah! The rice from this traditional Japanese set meal restaurant. This is comforting. This is the place where you can have a warming meal. Thank you for the meal.

It was a very hot day at Shinjuku Eisaa. A dining hall appeared in front of me. It's strange to see this in front of Shinjuku Station, it feels like a downtown area. I went inside with a curious feeling. I started with beer and vinegar octopus. I haven't seen vinegar octopus at recent izakayas. The fried squid set meal was delicious, with tender squid.

A no-nonsense diner near Shinjuku Station. It feels like time has stopped there, with a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere. I don't mind the buzzer that goes off when the order is ready. I hope they continue to quietly operate like this. The food is delicious, of course. I will definitely visit again. Thank you for the meal!

Founded in 1915, I visited the restaurant Nagano-ya. While enjoying their famous meat tofu, I ordered a large bottle of sake! Surprisingly, Nagano-ya is known for their delicious rice. Since I'm not looking for a heavy meal, the ham and eggs on rice was perfect. #Shinjuku Station South Exit #followme #foodstagram #food #foodporn #foodpics #foodie #foodphotography #yummy #followme #sake_evangelist #Shinjuku gourmet #diner #meat tofu #ham and eggs #Nagano-ya

I tried another famous katsudon today. The katsudon here is not too salty, with a gentle emphasis on umami flavor. It has a nostalgic taste that is very comforting. There are many other menu items, so I plan to try more.

Many customers were eating the pork cutlet curry, which looked tempting, but I wanted to eat something healthy, so I chose the mackerel simmered dish. I also added extra rice and a sunny-side-up egg. The mackerel, cooked until the bones were soft, went well with the rice.

I finally had the chance to visit a restaurant that I've been curious about for a while. I ordered the pork cutlet curry with miso soup, and I relayed my order to a young female hostess dressed in a traditional Japanese outfit. While waiting for my food, I observed a constant stream of what appeared to be regular customers coming in, some for meals and others for a midday drink. Sitting by the window, I could see the view of Shinjuku South Exit through the historic window glass, and suddenly I felt like I had traveled back to the 1970s, with a strong sense of nostalgia washing over me. I believe this place is like a time capsule right at Shinjuku Station, just a minute's walk away. The curry had a garlic-infused flavor that was incredibly nostalgic and delicious, with the pork cutlet being thick and tender, a perfect match for the curry. I also ordered an additional miso soup, which was a gentle and comforting type with tofu and seaweed, not overly salty like the typical set meal restaurants. Overall, the food had a homely taste that I really enjoyed. I'm looking forward to trying the pork cutlet bowl next time. My rating is based on the maximum level of nostalgia, so please take it with a grain of salt.

I visited the restaurant on a holiday afternoon. I entered as soon as it opened. It has a very retro and historic atmosphere, which many people were enjoying. I ordered the fish fry set meal, which was delicious in a typical set meal restaurant kind of way. If you want to enjoy this retro atmosphere, be sure to visit.

Just before 2:30 pm on a regular weekday, about a 1-minute walk from the southeast exit of Shinjuku Station. Once you go down the big staircase in front of the ticket gate, you're right there. A well-known old dining establishment with a red tent as a landmark. I was familiar with it as part of the cityscape since I used to live nearby, but only now did I make my first visit. The interior of the restaurant is lined with tables, with about 80% of the seats filled. It's a mix of late lunching salarymen and daytime drinkers, about half and half. There are many regular customers, creating a strangely Showa-era atmosphere. (Although there were also travelers from overseas, as it turned out later.) The staff in charge of customer service is a beautiful young lady in a kimono and a chef's jacket. It seems she is related to the owner of the restaurant who arrived later, as she is diligent in refilling water and greeting regular customers. I was served with water by this young lady, and I ordered the following: Barley shochu with hot water (530 yen x 2), Shirasu grated over rice (300 yen), and Meat and Tofu (490 yen). The hot water for the shochu is self-service, poured from a pot. The shochu is served in a glass by a relatively refined amount, and the hot water is piping hot. Then, without further ado, the Shirasu grated over rice arrived. The Meat and Tofu took a little longer to appear. It consisted of blackened silk tofu and probably pork belly. The extremely sweet and rich flavor was luxurious, especially when paired with shichimi togarashi. Moreover, the tofu in this dish had very clean corners. I would have definitely broken the tofu while transferring it to a plate, but how did they manage to plate it so neatly? It's an impressive skill. However, the contrast between the customers inside the restaurant and the trendy people passing by outside is so strange. I enjoyed observing the view from the open entrance while thinking about this. Shinjuku is great. Day drinking on a weekday is still great. I had to end my plan of abstaining from alcohol sooner than expected, but it was definitely the right decision with just a little drink. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Visited on the weekend. Even without a line, the seats were almost full as customers kept coming in. This is an old-established restaurant founded in 1915 located near Shinjuku Station South Exit. If you've been to Shinjuku, you may have seen it before. It's amazing that the restaurant has been operating unchanged amid the changes around Shinjuku Station. The entrance and interior have a nice Showa-era atmosphere. After a little research, I found that the "niku-dofu" (meat and tofu) is popular, so I ordered the "niku-dofu set meal" with natto. The niku-dofu was soaked in a slightly sweet sauce and it was delicious as expected. As the restaurant has been in business for over 100 years, I felt the weight of history in my mind as I enjoyed the meal. The female staff inside the restaurant were brisk and provided polite service, which helped me understand why they have been able to operate for so long. I recommend stopping by when you're in Shinjuku.

Today's lunch was at "Shokudo Nagano-ya" located at the south exit of Shinjuku Station, where I had the meat and tofu set meal for 840 yen. It was delicious, but the broth was incredibly rich (lol). Truly Tokyo style, with a young female hostess in a kimono and apron who was very friendly and cute. I got her permission to take a picture. I definitely want to go back again. #ShokudoNagano-ya #Shinjuku #diner #meatandtofu

I had the Tamago Don for 740 yen. The portion was generous and I was satisfied. It had kakiage on top, but the color was not great. The taste was decently good. I ended up putting a lot of shichimi on it. I thought it was cheap, but all the menu items were reasonably priced.

Today's dinner is at "Nagano-ya" in Shinjuku. I visited for lunch last time and felt a Showa-era nostalgia, but the restaurant has been around for over 100 years. Is it actually a Taisho-era nostalgia? For lunch, I had their signature dish, the "Katsu Curry (900 yen)." It was a dish that felt like Vermont curry made at home with a lot of garlic added. While looking at the menu, I noticed another signature dish, the "Niku Tofu (390 yen)," which caught my attention. I decided to come back for dinner and try it along with other dishes. I started with a bottle of beer. The first dish I ordered was the "Niku Tofu (390 yen)," which was served promptly. I broke the tofu with my chopsticks, revealing a contrast of dark brown on the outside and white inside. The taste was delicious, with a strong soy sauce flavor and a subtle hint of vinegar. Next, I ordered my favorite dish, the "Fish Fry (650 yen)," which actually turned out to be two pieces of horse mackerel. It was a bit pricey for frozen fish fry, but I was too excited to notice. I then switched to cold sake and ordered the "Grilled Mackerel (390 yen)," which was also a frozen product but tasted good with the sake. There were many other tempting dishes on the menu, but I couldn't miss out on the Niku Tofu. It will take more visits to truly understand the essence of this restaurant. Today's bill came to 2,200 yen per person.

When you exit from the southeast exit of Shinjuku Station and go down the stairs, you will see this restaurant with a red signboard in front of you. It has a traditional atmosphere that feels like a long-established eatery from the Showa era. It's 1:30 in the afternoon but the place is crowded. I managed to find a table at the back. First, I ordered a bottle of beer. In these traditional eateries, beer comes in bottles, and it's great that they serve large bottles. I ordered simmered mackerel and simmered thick fried tofu. I wanted to have simmered squid but they didn't have it that day, so I went with the thick fried tofu. A friendly waiter in a traditional Japanese apron brought the dishes and beer to me. The atmosphere was bright and pleasant. The simmered thick fried tofu was flavorful. The delicious thick fried tofu paired with cold beer was fantastic. And then, the simmered mackerel. It was simmered in soy sauce, not miso, giving it a sweet and savory taste. The beer went down smoothly. Two delicious simmered dishes and two beers. Simple and nostalgic atmosphere with simple dishes. I had a great time enjoying a daytime drink.

I started drinking with the intention of taking shelter from the rain at the classic restaurant "Nagoya" in Shinjuku Minami-guchi, and as the rain began to fall, I had a cup of sake. I started with mackerel and vegetable stew, had another cup of sake, got carried away and had another serving of mackerel. I thought it would be my last round, but ended up having an omelette and more sake. By the time the rain stopped, I had ended up drinking three cups in total. It was a good meal, thank you!
