This day, I had plans to depart from Haneda Airport and was about to miss lunch, so I decided to quickly grab a meal at the Royal Host right near Shinagawa Station. It had been about 20 years since I last visited this particular branch. Surprisingly, Royal Host has relatively few locations, and they don't have any stores in Yamagata, Tochigi, Gifu, Mie, Hokuriku, San'in, Shikoku, and other regions. They have a unique approach as a family restaurant, distancing themselves from direct management and discount pricing. In 2021, they celebrated their 50th anniversary. Despite being a large family restaurant, there were surprisingly few families (it was a Saturday), with more groups of friends and seniors. The staff wore sharp uniforms like flight attendants, and they moved briskly, perhaps influenced by the Shinagawa area.
I started with their signature dish, the "Onion Gratin Soup," which Marilyn Monroe reportedly ate three days in a row during her honeymoon in Japan. The consomme base was robust, with a strong sweetness from the onions. Finding a soup of this quality for around 500 yen is quite rare worldwide. Impressed by the soup, I also ordered the "Cream of Lobster Bisque." Wow! It was delicious! The rich flavor of crustaceans, combined with the umami of seafood broth, made for an outstanding dish. The creamy texture was also excellent. If this were casually served in a Michelin-starred restaurant, very few people would realize it's from a family restaurant.
Next was the Angus Sirloin Steak Salad. The kale salad with a tangy dressing was topped with a 100-gram Angus beef steak. It was delicious. Angus beef can sometimes be too chewy, but this steak had a tender texture similar to Japanese roast beef. It was much better than the food in American Airlines' first-class lounge at JFK. However, the bread (garlic toast?) was not tasty at all. It's just a complimentary bread from a family restaurant, but it stood out negatively after the excellent dishes.
I also tried the "Black x Black Hamburger," made with a blend of domestic black wagyu beef and black pork, served with a garlic sauce. The meat had a firm texture, and the hamburger was rich in meaty flavor. The side gratin (?) was also of high quality. I opted for multigrain rice as the carbohydrate. While it's common to have bread or rice, Royal Host offers various options like low-carb bread, multigrain rice, and regular bread, making it challenging to decide the best choice, especially for those with an IQ below 100. Perhaps simplifying the ordering process a bit would be beneficial.
In conclusion, Royal Host is fantastic. If a foreigner asked me, "I'm going to Japan, what food do you recommend?" I would suggest sushi, ramen, and Royal Host without hesitation. With affordable drinks and the option to make reservations, it could even be suitable for company gatherings. Most Western-style restaurants do not reach the level of taste and service at Royal Host, surpassing even the average hotel's all-day dining. It's much tastier than first-class airline meals. I encourage everyone to enjoy Royal Host with confidence.
